Happy New Year 2019, From The Mayor

Could I take this opportunity on behalf of all councillors to wish the Oberon Community a Safe, Healthy and Happy New Year. 2019 promises to be an exciting year with many new community infrastructure projects on the table such as the Indoor Fitness Centre, Skateboard Precinct and the third stage of the Oberon Pool upgrade. Council with the invaluable assistance of the community have adopted the twenty year Community Strategic Plan “Oberon 2040 – Roadmap to the Future”. I find this particularly exciting and an opportunity for Oberon to realise its enormous potential. We will this year be consulting on Village Plans to sit under this important document as well as other initiatives that will ensure our community continues to be a safe, prosperous and inclusive place to live. There are some great projects afoot this year that will not only be great for the community but attract visitors to briefly

taste what we can enjoy all year – our wonderful environment, climate and hospitality, so watch out for these events. I look forward to Australia Day 2019 when the community has the opportunity to acknowledge those that contribute to our society in many ways. I also look forward to a productive year working with fellow councillors and staff to achieve the best possible outcomes for our residents. Clr Kathy Sajowitz – Mayor Oberon Council

Oberon Council Movember Moberon team

The future of men’s health is looking even healthier thanks to the efforts of nearly 30 Oberonians. During the month of Movember they committed to either grow a moustache or walk 60km to raise funds for research into prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. The Oberon Council backed the initiative changing the name of the town to MOberon for the month and putting moustaches on Council trucks. Three Councillors took on the challenge to grow some face furniture and were joined by other Council workers and residents. The fundraising target of $5000 was smashed with over $5200 raised as we go to print with more donations flowing in. Plans are underway for next years event and it is hoped that many more people and businesses will participate in this fun and worthy cause. Donations are still being accepted at https://moteam.co/oberon updates on the funds raised can also be found on the moteam website. Many thanks to all who participated in our community. Please send us your before and after photos!

Presentation Night 2018

Presentation Night is the premier night on our calendar and gives us an opportunity to really showcase the talent of our students and the hard work that they put in. The 2018 event was fantastic with a full gymnasium (400 students, staff, family and community). Great sponsorship was received from the community which enabled us to provide many of the awards with a substantial gift card as an added reward for the

hard work of students during 2018. We had a number of invited guests on the night who accepted an invitation to present awards. The positive feedback from these people is particularly pleasing as they echo what we see each day – great students and a caring and committed staff. Presentation Night was a week earlier than in previous years and we are looking at continuing the earlier event in 2019.

SUPPORTING OUR FARMERS

At the end of 2018 I moved a motion in Parliament supporting the introduction of the Future Drought Fund, which provides a sustainable and ongoing source of funding for drought resilience, preparedness and recovery. In my speech I said: This drought is biting hard right across New South Wales, Queensland and many other parts of Australia. It’s hitting the communities of the Central West of New South Wales especially hard. Our farmers are extraordinarily resilient, but many have been struggling with many different aspects of this drought. If we want our farmers to be a key source of our national success and prosperity, as they have been, we need to support them to get through it to make sure that they are here for our nation when the rains come. Helping our farming families and their communities has been a real focus of the government and, as part of the government’s immediate and long-term drought response, we have committed nearly $6 billion, growing to $7 billion, in assistance, including additional funding and improvements to existing support. It’s about $6 billion at the moment. It’s going to grow to $7 billion. That is the biggest drought package in our nation’s history. That’s how important getting on top of this drought has been to this government. We need to support our country communities and our farmers to make sure that they can once again be the powerhouse of our economy, as they have been and as they will be again once the rains come.

OBERON RSL SUB BRANCH

HONOURED IN PARLIAMENT

November 11, 2018 marked the Centenary of Armistice and communities around Australia gathered to remember the service and sacrifice of the men and women who fought for our country. During the last sitting week of Parliament I recognised a number of RSL Sub Branches in the Calare electorate who held a local service, including Oberon. Below is an excerpt from my speech: There was also a very strong turnout at Oberon's commemorations. Oberon RSL sub-branch President Bill Wilcox recited The Ode. He was ably supported in organising the commemorations by

other RSL sub-branch members, including Secretary Neville Stapleton, Treasurer Don Stephens and Trustee Elaine Boxer. Following the service, local Oberon High School student Peta McGrath gave a presentation on her 12-day trip to the Western Front battlefields. I would like to pay tribute to all RSL members and community groups that organised services for Remembrance Day this year and also thank all community members who attended a service and fulfilled that sacred commitment to remember. GRANTS SET TO FLOW TO COMMUNITY GROUPS

I’m encouraging community groups in the Calare electorate to apply for funding through the Tackling Tough Times Together grant program, which helps communities access the resources they need to support one another through the ongoing effects of the drought. The Federal Government is investing $15 million in the program which will be administered by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal. There are many community and not-for-profit groups who are keen to help with drought relief efforts through new or existing programs and projects and this funding will help them in those efforts. Examples of projects supported through the program may include:

Creating or enhancing community gardens or other meeting places;

Hosting events showcasing local talents or film nights for the community;

Tools and equipment to boost community capacity to fundraise and provide local support including BBQs, trailers, water tanks and signage;

Small scale community infrastructure; and

Creating or enhancing tourism assets to encourage visitors, and economic activity.

The program is a rolling grants program, which means that applications will be accepted at any time. Further information on the program can be found at: www.frrr.org.au/grants/tackling_tough_times_together or alternatively, please phone my electorate office on (02) 6361 7138.
