Dear Friends—

Although anxious feelings and fears make people feel like they’re all alone, nothing could be further from the truth. Nearly 20 percent of American adults have a diagnosable anxiety disorder. In my work as a psychologist, I’ve seen clients dramatically change their relationship to anxiety by learning to use simple techniques when they feel anxiety symptoms coming on. These techniques were made available with the publication of The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook, which has now helped over one million people overcome a variety of anxiety disorders, fears, and phobias. Now in its fifth edition, we hope that this updated workbook can help millions more overcome anxiety and live more freely.

This season, we’re also publishing a new edition of another of our most innova-tive books, The Gift of ADHD. This book, which is now recommended in the American Psychiatric Association’s Parents Medication Guide, invites parents to view their children’s attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a gift that can be harnessed for greater productivity and creativity, all while offering help for overcoming ADHD-related problems. This updated second edition reviews new trends in ADHD treatment and reports on new research that suggests ADHD may, in fact, offer unique benefits in this fast-paced digital age.

Lastly, I’d like to call your attention to a brand new book of ours titled Urban Mind-fulness. This book shows readers how to transform ordinary city experiences, like traveling on the subway and dealing with crowds, into opportunities for mindful reflection. The meditations in this guide will be enormously useful for anyone living in a high-volume, high-stress urban environment.

Thank you, as always, for your interest in our books and for supporting New Harbinger in our mission to provide important resources to the people who need them most.

The Gift of ADHD, Second EditionHow to Transform Your Child’s Problems into StrengthsLara Honos-Webb, Ph.D.

Foreword by Scott M. Shannon, MD

■ The first edition sold nearly 50,000 copies and is

recommended in the Parents Medication Guide.

■ Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is the most

common behavioral disorder in children.

■ The author’s books have sold nearly 100,000 copies.

The first edition of The Gift of ADHD revolutionized the way parents understood their children’s attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and offered new hope to children and adults alike struggling with ADHD symptoms. That book suggested that many of the traits common among kids with ADHD are expressions of deeper gifts: a powerful imagination, a great capacity for insight, and unusual intuition to name a few.

Now in its second edition, The Gift of ADHD reviews the remarkable new ADHD research that increasingly supports author Lara Honos-Webb’s view that ADHD is a gift rather than a hindrance. The new edition explains why ADHD is an asset in the digital age and shows readers how they can help their children to enhance these gifts by channeling ADHD-related traits into productive outlets. It includes exercises for helping parents cope with feelings of failure they may be experiencing and offers advice for navigating education and mental health systems to their children’s advantage. Parents also learn to reverse their children’s negative ADHD behaviors.

Lara Honos-Webb, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in the San

Francisco Bay Area and author of The Gift of ADHD Activity Book, Listening to Depression,

and The Gift of Adult ADD.

Foreword writer Scott M. Shannon, MD, is a founding member of the American Holistic

Medical Association and founder of an integrative clinic in child psychiatry at the University

of Colorado Children’s Hospital in Denver, CO.

Little Ways to Keep Calm and Carry OnTwenty Lessons for Managing Worry, Anxiety, and FearMark A. Reinecke, Ph.D.

■ 18 percent of Americans suffer from an anxiety

disorder.

■ This book is even more concise than 10 Simple

Solutions to Panic, which sold nearly 25,000 copies,

partly due to its short, simple format.

■ Author Mark Reinecke is a professor of psychiatry

and behavioral sciences and chief of the Psychology

Division at Northwestern University.

“Keep calm and carry on” is a phrase that was featured on a British poster produced during World War II. This practical reminder to set anxiety aside has become the mantra of thousands of people who suffer from everyday worries, fears, and frustrations, but how to keep calm remains a difficult question for the millions of people suffering from clinical and subclinical anxiety.

Finally, there is a pocket-sized book readers can turn to in the very moment they are experiencing anxiety. Little Ways to Keep Calm and Carry On is an on-the-spot emergency kit for calming worries and fears. It features twenty short lessons and techniques for understanding and calming anxiety. Author Mark Reinecke created these lessons out of years of anxiety research and personal experience treating anxiety as a psychologist. Drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), the most effective therapeutic method for calming anxiety symptoms, each short lesson includes a quote, an explanation of how the anxiety-reducing technique works, and an activity or reflection for the reader. This concise handbook is perfect for anyone who needs a little help keeping calm in anxious times.

Mark A. Reinecke, Ph.D., is professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and chief of

the Division of Psychology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

The Lotus EffectShedding Suffering and Rediscovering Your Essential SelfPavel G. Somov, Ph.D.

■ Approximately 10 million Americans meditate.

■ Author Pavel Somov’s previous books include Eating

the Moment and Present Perfect.

■ This book shows readers how to become more

resilient to negative experiences and more open to

positive ones.

What if we could go through a day of spilled coffee, traffic snarls, and fights with our loved one, and emerge feeling balanced and unscathed? The Lotus Effect offers ancient meditative techniques designed to help readers do just that. Written by clinical psychologist and practicing Buddhist Pavel Somov, this book breaks down the “lotus effect”—the ability of the lotus plant to repel any non-nourishing foreign substances that cling to it in order to allow it to access as much sunlight and water as possible. This natural resilience helps it thrive and bloom in even the worst conditions.

The Lotus Effect offers meditation techniques and intriguing thought and perception exercises for shedding difficult thoughts and experiences, anger, worry, and feelings of low self-worth. Readers discover what triggers their minds to focus on these feelings, and they practice disidentifying with these thoughts and instead identifying with their essential selves—the selves which remain unstained by the slings and arrows of daily life. Somov introduces practical meditation practices including neti-neti (mindful detachment from distressing information), vipassana (interconnection between mind and body), Dzogchen meditation (acceptance and awareness of reality), and Western relaxation training.

Pavel G. Somov, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in Pittsburgh, PA. He is author of Eating

the Moment and Present Perfect.

Urban MindfulnessCultivating Peace, Presence, and Purpose in the Middle of it AllJonathan S. Kaplan, Ph.D.

■ 58 percent of Americans live in urban areas.

■ Author Jonathan Kaplan suggests using common city

occurrences as jumping-off points for meditation and

reflection.

■ Kaplan has his own blog, www.urbanmindfulness.com,

and a blog on Psychology Today.

City dwellers are constantly inundated with new information, new people, and new experiences. The often overwhelming urban environment can make it all too easy for us to shut down and zone out instead of focusing on the present moment and connecting with others. Urban Mindfulness is for everyone living in areas where fast-paced realities of urban living—noise, crowds, traffic, and social problems—seem to get in the way of inner peace and present-moment awareness.

In a chatty and witty tone, this book invites the reader to see the urban landscape as a doorway into mindful living rather than as an obstacle. The book includes many short reflections, exercises, and meditations on daily experiences such as shopping, sitting in traffic, and taking public transportation. For example, the author offers suggestions for using the movement of the commuter train to focus our attention on the physical reality of our bodies, and for opening our hearts to the panhandler on the street corner as an exercise in awakening compassion.

Jonathan S. Kaplan, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and director of the stress management

program at the American Institute of Cognitive Therapy in New York City.

Eating with Fierce KindnessA Mindful and Compassionate Approach to Losing Weight and Making Peace with FoodSasha T. Loring, M.Ed., LCSW

■ This program addresses why most diets fail: self-

criticism, high expectations, and body image issues.

■ Sasha Loring leads mindful eating classes through

Duke University.

■ Mindful eating is correlated with a lower body mass

index.

People who tend to overeat or binge eat—many of whom are yo-yo dieters—fail to meet their weight loss goals in part because of their “all or nothing” mindset. If they succeed in denying themselves foods they like, they consider themselves to be successful, but if they make a mistake, the self-criticism and guilt they feel can be overwhelming. And these feelings can lead to further overeating.

Eating with Fierce Kindness presents a new approach to weight loss, one that focuses on breaking that destructive cycle with self-compassion. The book helps readers become aware of the present moment so that they can make healthy food choices, but also shows them how to manage the inevitable obstacles to weight loss: disappointment at the rate of weight loss, guilt about “cheating” on a diet, emotional issues surrounding food, negative body image, and low self-confidence. Readers learn to move beyond pursuing weight loss in order to meet a social standard or because of a bad self-image and instead develop healthier eating habits out of kindness toward themselves and their bodies. The book also offers advice for changing eating patterns, recognizing the signs of hunger and fullness, and navigating food triggers, such as emotional eating, that may be affecting eating patterns.

Sasha T. Loring, M.Ed., LCSW, is a psychotherapist who teaches mindful eating and

mindfulness-based stress reduction programs in Durham, NC, and around the country.

The Buddha’s Way of HappinessHealing Sorrow, Transforming Negative Emotion, and Finding Well-Being in the Present MomentThomas Bien, Ph.D. Foreword by Lama Surya Das

■ Thomas Bien is an expert in Buddhist mindfulness

psychotherapy.

■ This book examines and shows how to overcome the

six most common obstacles to happiness.

■ Buddhist psychology has become increasingly popular

in recent years, both among the public and Western

clinical psychologists.

Happiness is always available. This simple truth is difficult to remember, though, amid our anxieties about the future, regrets about the past, and constant longing to change our lives for the better. Humans naturally focus on what is frightening and disturbing rather than the nurturing, pleasant experiences that happen all around us. Buddha’s Way of Happiness shows readers how to differentiate true happiness from momentary joy and pleasure in order to foster an everyday deep contentment that transcends the excitement of “special” experiences.

With the view that happiness is a process, not a goal, author Thomas Bien explains the six most common barriers to happiness: the belief that happiness is elusive, the belief that one doesn’t deserve to be happy, the belief that happiness is something that will happen in the future, the belief that one can only feel happiness after a goal has been fulfilled, a dualistic perception of reality, and the illusion of space and time. He also presents exercises and meditations readers can use to overcome each obstacle and attune themselves to the unseen happiness that already exists in their lives.

Thomas Bien, Ph.D., is a psychologist in private practice in Albuquerque, NM, where he

also teaches mindfulness and meditation.

Foreword writer Lama Surya Das is a lineage holder in the Dzogchen tradition of Tibetan

Buddhism residing in Cambridge, MA. He is founder of Dzogchen Center and author of

many books. The Dalai Lama calls him The American Lama.
