NEW HIGH SCHOOL OPENED SEPTEMBER 3RD

The new Jr/Sr High School ushered in a new era as it welcomed students and ad-ministrators on September 3, 2013. The school building houses grades six through twelve.

Through the diligence of school board members and school administrators, the Ohio Facilities School Commission guaranteed 61% of the funding for the new school if a bond levy was passed by the citizens. A grass roots campaign, ‘Our Kids Can’t Wait’, was highly successful with voters casting ballots two to one for the new school and renovations to the old stadium. The $19 million, 84,000 square-foot structure is now a reality. A

groundbreaking ceremony was held in May of 2012 and the cornerstone cere-mony was later conducted by members of Toronto Lodge #583 F& AM.

The high-tech building is completely “wi-fied”, with several computer labs that include desktops, laptops and IPADS. There is a full function media center room (Library). It is an energy-efficient building with room for expansion and growth. Windows are every-where, with architects taking advantage of natural lighting to help cut down utility costs.

“I think when our students and pupils walk into a building like this, they will know their commu-nity supports them and wants the best for their future”, comment-ed Maureen Wherry Taggart ’88,

school principal.

To insure the security of students and staff, all people, including students, enter the school through a set of double doors leading into the office area. The administration wing has office space for administrators, guidance coun-selor, school psychologist, the district nurse and conference rooms.

The two story classroom section of the building is equipped with an elevator. The second floor houses classrooms for those in grades nine thru twelve along with labs for chemistry, physics and life sciences.

Re-U-Knight 2014 August 28-31st

The joyful sounds of classmates meeting, some after many years and others not so long ago, will fill the valley around the small city of Toronto during the Labor Day weekend in 2014. The time lets us rekindle the memories we had dur-ing our days at THS; to re-live those simpler times and remember the values taught to us by our parents, teachers and a caring community.

The All-School Reunion will kick off with a “Welcome Home Party and Pep Rally” on Thursday, August 28th at the Gazebo area (Market & Third Streets). It will start with meeting the current football team. Plans are being made to also incorporate recognizing alumni football players, cheerleaders and band members and finishing the evening with some “Knight” music.

Friday events will include a golf scramble at Dyer Country Club in the morning, a tailgate reception and send off party to be held at Karaffa Elementary School, in the afternoon, for recognition of the distinguished alumni, life members and sponsors of the events. With an away football game to be played in Wellsville, alumni will be able to enjoy a “road trip” by way of school buses to the game.

Saturday morning brings back the “Parade of Classes” in a limited version. Older alumni will be able to ride the trolley at the head of the parade down Third Street and end at the Festival of the Arts band stand on River Ave-nue. There will be tours of the new high school available in the afternoon. The Alumni Association reunion dinner will be held at the new high school with a short program to follow. Mixers for all decades will be held on Saturday evening to complete the organized part of the weekend. Locations of all mixers will be posted.

Churches will hold special festivities on Sunday. Many classes will be planning special class reunion events on Sat-urday and Sunday afternoons. Since there are a limited number of places available to hold events, if your class is planning something, please let the alumni office know, so information can be passed along to others. We also have a list of locations available.

Invitations will be mailed out in April 2014 and more details will be available on our website: www.torontoohioalumni.com as they become available next year.

Where did the auctioned items go?

In September an online auction was conducted by Bassinger Auction Services for items in the former high school building. The courtesy and professionalism the workers displayed to those that viewed the items on Monday before the auction is certainly commended. Catalogs of items were handed out and items throughout the school were easily located with pictures and descriptions that corresponded to items on the auction site.

Fred Burns ‘67, superintendent of schools stated, “ the gross sales on the auction exceeded $75,000, with net sales coming in considerably less. It still far exceeds what was netted from items sold at the S.C. Dennis School auction”.

Just about anything that could be removed: display cases, seats, cafeteria tables, lab tables, oak bookcases, carts, doors, desks and chairs were purchased. While we do not know what happened to many of the items, this story is one that will make alumni feel good. Now we know that things we took for granted, while attending the school, have an extended shelf life.

A company with locations in Cleveland, OH and Los Angeles, CA, called Cleveland Art, purchased the bleach-ers from the school at auction. The company was found-ed in 1994 by Jason Wein. While working at the family salvage yard, he saw the potential of industrial machin-ery and surplus being repurposed and recycled as func-tional designs for the home, office and retail setting. Cleveland Art also uses steel, wood and glass to manu-facture selected lines of furniture, lighting and retail dis-plays for clients throughout the United States and abroad. The company purchased the gymnasium bleach-ers and will use them in their furniture items. Their website can be found at: www.clevelandart.com. Their showroom is located in Los Angeles, CA.

New School continued

The south wing of the building houses the more common areas such as the

gymnasium, cafetorium (cafeteria and auditorium), band room, choir room, media center,

weight room, computer room and other group activity areas.

The response of the students to their new school can be

summed up in a statement from school board member, Jay

Foster ’00 , “Students use to run out of the former high school

building the second the bell sounded, but now you see them

hanging around the halls, enjoying the atmosphere and visiting

with their friends”.

According to school superintendent, Fred Burns ’67, the district

has increased its enrollment by one hundred thirty students

through the “open enrollment” option. “The most important

goal for all the board members was to make the school the best

place for the kids”, Burns said.
