Last year, I attended my cousin’s graduation from an Adventist academy in Southern California. My cousin’s class had a reputation for being unusually close, like brothers and sisters in one big family. As an objective observer, I did not find it difficult to see the deep connection among the students.

Their relationship with one another began as freshmen. That year, their classmate Jaris was paralyzed from the neck down after a snow-skiing accident. Jaris was a sports guy who skied, surfed and mountain biked with gusto. He was captain of the junior varsity basketball and baseball teams. He was gregarious, friendly and proud to be stereotyped as a California golden boy.

While Jaris was hospitalized, not one day passed without a classmate visiting him. When he was transferred to a rehabilitation facility, the daily visits continued. But it was then that Jaris, finally realizing the full impact of his injuries, spiraled into a deep depression. He lost the motivation for rehab. He refused to see his friends and classmates. He even began talking about suicide.

His classmates made a plan to be personally involved in Jaris’ life. They went to rehab sessions to encourage him to keep up the exercises. They filmed class lectures and did homework with him. They took him to the beach, movies, ball games and restaurants. They refused to allow the paralysis to change Jaris’ and their lives. As one classmate said, “Jaris is one of us and always will be. Whatever we do, we will make sure he does it with us — no matter what.”

So, on graduation day, the class marched down the aisle and stopped at the bottom of

the stairs that lead to the stage. Instead of letting Jaris take the wheelchair ramp at the back of the stage, his classmates did something that confirmed their depth of character. They gathered around Jaris’ wheelchair. Some of the boys lifted it up, and, together as a class, they climbed the stairs.

In their four years together, not one person was left out or behind. As the class president concluded her remarks, she said to her classmates: “Though we have to leave this place and go our separate ways, we will always be there for each other. This is what gives us the courage to face this big world ahead of us. Thanks, guys. I love you all.”

The first chapters of Acts describe a community of believers living in unity and concern for one another. They shared everything so no one was left out or behind.

“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had….And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them” (Acts 4:32-34).

This act of love is seldom seen in the world today. Yet it is exactly what distinguishes the community that follows Jesus from any other community. When was the last time you shared everything you had?
