Message from the President September 2018

While half of the world lives autumn the other half lives spring.

Have you noticed how balanced our life always is?

-Roxana Janes-

Greetings,

As the summer draws to a close, I hope all of you have enjoyed your travels to faraway places or

familiar locations that conjure up great memories of family and friends. With the almost daily rain,

there were times it seemed I was living back in the tropics during the monsoon season. Of course,

the upside to the weather is we have lush green lawns and beautiful blooms on our flowers without

outrageously high water bills!

This year we have a varied array of interest groups led by our outstanding interest group chairs and

their board liaison Janet Orcutt. The interest groups offer you the opportunity to participate in

activities that are familiar to you or to try something new. Most interest groups request an RSVP

and some are limited in the number of attendees. Remember Newcomers is all about friends, fun,

and fellowship.

In September, you will receive the 2018-2019 Newcomers Directory that contains the names and

contact information for our members. Susan Ragan, Linda Brandon, and Katherine Wilkinson are

the board members that work as a team to create the Directory and ensure its delivery to you.

Throughout the year we will update our website, NewcomersclubRaleigh.org, with new members.

In closing, I want to share three upcoming events with you. At our October 5 Welcome Coffee, we

will have a speaker from the NC Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). This will

be an opportunity to learn about any changes in Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare

Advantage, Medicare Part D, and long-term care insurance just in time for 2019 Open Enrollment

that runs from October 15 – December 7, 2018.

On September 26, Anita Timbrook will host our first Pop Up Event. It will be a trip to Ayr Mount, a

federal era plantation house built in 1815. Look on page 6 for details. Rene John got the holiday

spirit early this year and already has plans in place for our holiday party on December 6. Mark

your calendars for September 26, October 5 and December 6 for these special upcoming events.

Happy Fall,

Rusine Sinclair

Appointments can also be made for personal consultations at Senior Centers in the area. Another

service offered is to help people recognize and prevent Medicare billing errors and possible fraud and

abuse through their NC Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program.

Since this program's creation in 1986, SHIIP has become a role model for others states and has

received two national awards for "innovative" and "exemplary" service.

The speaker will also talk about the various activities offered at the senior centers in the Triangle.
