    IN SCHOOLS

    SCHOOLS AS SOUND

    FOUNDATIONS

School plays a vital role in the overall

development of a child into a competent adult

who contributes usefully to society. Almost all

children attend school at sometime during their

lives and spend 6-7 hours of their time everyday

in that learning environment. Schools are often

the strongest social and educational institutionsavailable for execution of intervention

programmes as they have the required structure

    and governance. Schools have profound

influence on thinking patterns and behavior of

children, their families and the community in

general. When teachers are actively involved inteaching and related activities, the interventions

can reach generations of children. Parents are

    added resources for various educational

programmes in schools. It is true that schools

act as a model for the community.

    INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENTS

    COMPREHENSIVE &

    CONTINUOUS EVALUATION

Education aims at making children capable of

    becoming responsible, productive and useful

members of society. Knowledge, Skills and

attitudes are built through learning experiences

and opportunities created for learners in

schools. It is in the classroom that learners can

  • 7/28/2019 New Innovative Developments 2

    4/31

analyze and evaluate their experiences, learn to

doubt, to question to investigate and to think

    independently.

    Comprehensive & continuous evaluation of

    students Introduced by C.B.S.E. which

    encompasses various co- curricular activities

    including participation in sports programmes

and thus gets immense significance at primary,

secondary & Senior Secondary levels. Continuous andComprehensive Evaluation (CCE) refers to a system of school-based evaluation of students that covers all aspects of

students development. It is a developmental process of assessment which emphasizes on two fold objectives. These

objectives are continuity in evaluation and assessment of broad based learning and behavioral outcomes on the

other. In this scheme the term continuous is meant to emphasize that evaluation of identified aspects of

students growth and developments is a continuous process rather than an event, built into the total teaching

learning process and spread over the entire span of academic session. It means regularity of assessment,

frequency of unit testing, diagnosis of learning gaps, use of corrective measures, retesting and feedback of

evidence to teachers and students for their self evaluation.

The second term comprehensive'means that the scheme attempts to cover both thescholastic and the co - scholastic aspects of students' growth and development. Sinceabilities, attitudes

and aptitudes can manifest themselvesinforms other then the written word, the term refers to application

of variety of tools and techniques (bothtesting and non-testing) and aims at assessing a learner'sdevelopment in areas of learning like.

    o Understanding/Comprehension

    o Applying

    o Analyzing

    o Evaluating

    o Creating

The scheme is thus a curricular initiative,

attempting to shift emphasis from testing to

holistic learning. It aims at creating goodcitizens possessing

sound health, appropriate skills and desirable

    qualities besides academic excellence. C.C.E.

not only provides necessary feedback about

acquired level of learning and areas of

desireinputes for enhancement of learning in

scholastic areas, it also lays equal emphasis on

proficiency of learners in the acquisition of

essential life skills, attitude & values interestand achievement in outdoor co- curricular

activities including sports. It is hoped that this

will equip the learners to meet the challenges of

    life with confidence and success.

    EVALUATION AREAS

    SIGNIFICANCE OF C.C.E.

  • 7/28/2019 New Innovative Developments 2

    9/31

The process of assessing the students progress

in achieving objectives related to scholastic and

co- scholastic domain is called comprehensive

evaluation. It has been observed that usually the

scholastic areas such as Knowledge and

understanding of the facts, concepts, principles

etc. of a subject are assessed. The co- scholasticelements are either altogether excluded from

the evaluation process or they are not given

adequate attention. For making the evaluation

    comprehensive, the scholastic and co-scholastic

both should be given importance. Simple and

manageable means of assessment of co-

scholastic aspects of growth have been included in thescheme.

The desirable behavior related to the learner's

    knowledge, understanding, application,

evaluation, analysis, and creating in subjects

and the ability to apply it in an unfamiliar

  • 7/28/2019 New Innovative Developments 2

    10/31

situation are some of the objectives in scholastic

    domain.

The desirable behavior related to learner's Life Skills, attitudes, interests, values, co-curricularactivities physical health are described as skills to be acquired in co-scholastic

    domain.

    IMPORTANT FEATURES OF C.C.E.

In the teaching leaning process, the evaluationis expected to take care of scholastic and co-

scholastic aspects. If a child is week in some

    area, diagnostic evaluation and remedial

    measures need to be adopted.

It helps the teacher to organize effective

    teaching strategies.

    Continuous evaluation helps in regular

assessment to the extent and degree of

Learner's progress (ability and achievementwith reference to specific scholastic and co-

    scholastic areas).

  • 7/28/2019 New Innovative Developments 2

    11/31

    Continuous evaluation serves to diagnose

weaknesses and permits the teacher to

ascertain an individual learner's strengthsand weaknesses and her needs. It provides

immediate feedback to the teacher, who can

then decide whether a particular unit or

concept needs re-teaching in the whole class

or whether a few individuals are in need of

    remedial instruction.

By continuous evaluation, children can know

their strengths and weaknesses. It provides

the child a realistic self assessment of how

she studies. It can motivate children to

develop good study habits, to correct errors,

and to direct their activities towards the

achievement of desired goals. It helps a

learner to determine the areas of instruction

in which more emphasis is required.

  • 7/28/2019 New Innovative Developments 2

    12/31

    Continuous and comprehensive evaluation

identifies areas of aptitude and interest. It

helps in identifying changes in attitudes, andvalue systems.

It helps in making decisions for the future,

regarding choice of subjects, courses and

    careers.

    It provides information/reports on the

progress of students in scholastic and co-

scholastic areas and thus helps in predicting

the future successes of the learner.

    PEC INDIA PROGRAMME (A CBSE

    AND BRITISH COUNCIL

    INITIATIVE)

PEC - India apparently appears to be a set of

Cards, Teachers' Manual and an Equipment Kit,But it is actually an innovative approach and

method for effective transaction of the physical

    education curriculum in Indian schools,

beginning with the primary stage. It has been

pre-tested in selected schools affiliated to CBSE

including Kendriya Vidyalayas located in Delhi,

Chennai and Mumbai and also the schools of

Delhi Administration. The pilot study has found it

to be the most effective strategy. The strategy is

based on the premise that every learner mattersand also that gamesand sports can develop skills, like observation skills, analytical skills, evaluation skills,

leadership and teamwork skills, communication skills, emotional and intrapersonal intelligence

and motor skills, that are relevant in other areas of the curriculum and for holistic development.

It has prove to be effective transaction strategy.

So far no material of this kind has been available

to teachers and students for the delivery of

physical education curriculum in schools. The

special features of these Cards are as follows:

The Cards are basic materials to be used by

    teachers for conducting games/activities

that are part of the physical education

component of existing Health and Physical

    Education syllabus.

Each Card is formatted to provide essential

    information needed for engaging all

students of a class in the selected

    game/activity. Any activity whenever

organized will definitely ensure that each

student actively participates and has equalopportunity of involvement. So far if any

game or activity is organized, only a few

  • 7/28/2019 New Innovative Developments 2

    15/31

participate and that too in an unsystematic

    manner.

Each Card focused on a particular

game/activity explains the ability to be

focused, the process of organizing activities,

equipment needed, safety measures to be

taken and the skills to be developed.

The Cards are so organized that they

provide vertical continuity and horizontal comprehensiveness in terms ofthe coverage of the entire curriculum of physical education meant for a particular stage.

In the form of these Cards the teachers as

well as students will have a material that

can be very conveniently handled and used

for a longer time and in a better way than a

material in the form of a book.

The pictorial of each set of activities and the

process to be abserved each card will

  • 7/28/2019 New Innovative Developments 2

    16/31

facilitate the orfanization of the activities by

following the required method in a much

    better way.

The Cards will not only facilitate the

organization of activities but also make it

more convenient for the teacher as well as

    students to comprehend the concerned

vocabulary as well as pedagogical tools.

PEC INDIA Methodology will bring about a

paradigm shift in the transaction of physical

education in schools affiliated to CBSE, and this

has been proved immensely in all the schools

that have been part of the pilot study.

Realizing the need for providing guidelines to

    the elementary and secondary teacher

education institutions for setting up the

essential facilities and services for the use and

reference of both teacher educators and

students teachers, the NCTE decided to develop

'guidelines' to begin with, in respect of the

following and publish the same in the form of a

Manual for Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs):

    1. Science and Mathematics Education

    Therefore, gradually with growth and

development of education in India, the impact ofadvancement in the area of physical education

and sport sciences was gradually visible. It is an area of study which has close

connectivity with variety of other academic disciplines. It will be interesting to know that

during more than 60 years of Independence, we have seen substantial growth of

educational institutional courses imparting course in Physical Education and

Sports at both the undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels. As of now 80

universities including the only Central university - L.N.U.P.E in India are imparting

courses in our discipline at various levels with some of them having facilities of post PG

and Doctorate programmes. Additionally, there are many NCTE colleges in some of the

states running various professional courses. Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sport

University at Chennai is a recent addition to the list of institutions as the first

A Core team headed by the principal and

supported by Physical Education teacher (s),

activity teachers, fitness experts, sportsstaff, health- care providers and off course

every member of the staff is required to

guide & monitor in effectively implementing

the health, fitness, sports and movement

activities of the children. Every member of

the core team has to richly contribute in

attainment of health objectives but the role

of the head is crucial as he or she has to act

as an effective leader to guide and provide

directions to the entire team. In school

situation Principal is a vital link between the

    management, school boards, governmental

    agencies, parent community for
