Newberry Christian Fellowship, led by Pastor John Sensenig, obtained both the former Memorial Baptist building at 2100 3rd St. and the St. Matthew Lutheran building at 2233 Linn St., across from Phil Park. Originally meeting in the basement of the Diamond Square Market on 4th St. and then in the West End Christian Community Center, the fellowship knew it needed to find a permanent location, says Sensenig. The church was planted by its sending church in Watsontown. It started with about six families and a few single people volunteering to take on the work of building a new church in a more urban area. Church services started in January 2017, and the Diamond Square Market opened for business in May of that year. “We got the Memorial Baptist building first,” Sensenig says, “but then St. Matthew became available, and it was in a more desirable location right across from the park.” The Mennonite church also plans to renovate the Memorial Baptist building, which has a number of maintenance needs, and use it to start a day care center in the near future. “We want to avoid any feeling of competition. Our desire is to work alongside existing efforts in the community,” Sensenig says. Any ministry or service ideas are checked against other programs on offer elsewhere in the area to ensure there is no significant overlap. Besides their normal Sunday services and the resources they make available at the Diamond Square Market, Newberry Christian Fellowship holds Truth Club youth meetings every first and third Thursday evenings at the St. Matthew building, and they offer a property care service for shut-ins. The youth meetings are generally for ages 5-11, though some activities are also provided for teens. Our main objective,” Sensenig says, “is to offer the life-giving message of Jesus Christ…[but as Mennonites] we want to emphasize the practical living out of the faith, not just believing creeds but putting the faith into shoe leather.” Mennonites trace their founding to the Anabaptist groups that came out of the Reformation around 1525, emphasizing local congregation autonomy, non-resistance, and a life of obedience to Jesus’s commands in the Sermon on the Mount. ~ Submitted by Joshua Hill insideNewberry To honor the past...inform the present...envision the future, insideNewberry is published quarterly by Newberry Community Partnership (NCP) as a service to the neighborhood to promote community pride and facilitate communication between residents, schools, civic organizations and businesses. NEWBERRY STREETS TO UNDERGO IMPROVEMENTS Newberry residents and business owners will see a significant, long-term improvement in the condition of West Fourth Street once PennDOT’s West Fourth Street Reconstruction Project is completed in 2020. The contractor is expected to begin work in October. This multi-year project includes reconstruction of West Fourth Street from Hillside Avenue to Oliver Avenue, and from Arch Street to Route 15 in Newberry. The project includes full depth reconstruction of the street, new curbs and sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act curb ramp upgrades, driveway and street tie-ins, storm sewer upgrades, tree work, and replacement of antiquated traffic signals. In addition to the areas being reconstructed, West Fourth Street will be milled and paved from Oliver Avenue to Arch Street. Work also will be conducted on Oliver Avenue from West Fourth Street to Unnamed Alley No. 7 (called Dove Ct. on Google Maps) and on Unnamed Alley No. 7 from Oliver Avenue to Wayne Avenue. West Fourth Street will be closed only where the contractor is actively working. Traffic will have access to all portions of West Fourth Street except where work is being performed. Side street access also will be available. Parking will be restricted in the work area. A detour will be in effect during work on West Fourth Street using Wahoo Drive, Trenton Avenue, McMinn Avenue, Poplar Street, West Third Street and Rose Street. There will be a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of West Third Street and the Route 15 on- and off-ramps. Pre- and post-construction housing inspections will be performed along West Fourth Street. Race Street between West Fourth Street and Newberry Street will be two way with parking restrictions. The pavement on West Fourth Street is severely deteriorated. The brick and concrete subbase was constructed in the 1920s and can no longer support the pavement. Reconstruction is necessary because paving over the deteriorated base is no longer efficient or economical. ~ Submitted by David Thompson, Community Relations Coordinator, PennDOT District 3-0.

Editor’s Note: Phil Preziosi, after whom Phil Park is named, has taken an active role in improving the park. There have been varying opinions about Phil’s ideas, so in order to accommodate all who would like to have their concerns heard, the city has created a question-naire. The Newberry Community Partnership, publisher of insideNewberry, supports improvements to Phil Park that will benefit the community and make more use of the park. While we have not endorsed any specific plan, we look forward to hearing more from Phil about what he would like to do at the park. I encourage the city and Newberry residents to keep an open mind and do what’s best for the majority of residents. For your convenience, insideNewberry is providing this copy of the survey that you may fill out and send to the City’s Streets and Parks Office Building. ~ Bob Woodley

High School in 1920. It was converted to and renamed as Jackson Elementary School in 1952. In 1992, the aging school was deemed overcrowded and scheduled for demolition to accommodate the construction of the current building. In 1993, a new Jackson Elementary School opened as home of the “Jackson Eagles” for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. After two decades, a district-wide reconfiguration in 2013 re-named it as a primary school for kindergarten through third-grade students. Principal Kirk Felix said the evening will take a retrospective look at the school’s opening year, showcasing aspects of the social, political and economic climate of its early 90’s beginnings. While the event itself is an invitation to the community, Felix said students also will take part in celebrating their school’s birthday with themed activities throughout that week. ~ Submitted by Greg L. Lycoming Nursery SchoolLNS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF FUN The 2018-2019 school year marks the 50th anniversary of Lycoming Nursery School! Lycoming Nursery School is an affordable, non-profit school that offers excellent social and academic preparation, in addition to music class, Story-Mobile, Stretch-n-Grow and monthly field trips. The school is a unique opportunity for children to grow and learn with teachers that are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The fall season brings much excitement to the school as we have many events and outings for the students. Beginning in October our students will visit a local fire station to learn about fire safety, pick the perfect pumpkin at Carpenter’s pumpkin patch, as well as participate in all of the spooky fun activities of Halloween, including a costume parade and party. In November, the school will host a Thanksgiving dinner for our families, prepared by our students and staff. December is a very exciting month for our school as we prepare for the holidays and also our biggest and most popular fundraiser, our annual “Breakfast With Santa.” This year the event will be held on December 1st at Lycoming Presbyterian Church. Children can visit and take photos with Santa and enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast. During the event there will be a silent auction

SCHOOLS CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY Jackson Primary School is inviting the community to journey back to 1993 later this fall when it plans to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Organizers are hard at work planning a public commemoration of the school that has reached its quarter-century mark with an open house from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 24. “We have a number of things planned for that evening that captures the spirit of the building as it is now while celebrating its history,” said Kay Fisher, one of the event organizers who has served as the school’s music teacher since its opening. “The event will look back at not only this building through the years but will also honor its predecessor.” Anchored in the Newberry Street neighborhood, the school originally opened as Theodore Roosevelt Junior

WBS CELEBRATES GRANDPARENTS AT ANNUAL TEA On Friday, September 14, the annual Grandparents’ Tea was held at West Branch School. This yearly event honors grandparents and the impact they have on young lives. All grandparents of current students were invited to attend. Following tradition, the tea began with a short program led by WBS students. Throughout the previous weeks, students had created drawings, poems, books, and songs in honor of their grandparents and the bonds that are shared between generations. Students had the opportunity to introduce their grandparents and present their works of art. It is always heartwarming to see the smiles and love between children and their grandparents. After the program, all grandparents were invited to enjoy a luncheon with their grandchildren. They also had the opportunity to meet teachers and tour the school. West Branch School is a parent-led school, and grandparents are always welcome to share their talents and gifts with the students. Last spring, Marsha Watro, grandmother of WBS student Jack McChesney, was a guest speaker and storyteller at WBS. As part of her program, she had the K-2 students create “Crayon Blocks” that seven women later sewed into quilts. These “Crayon Quilts” will be donated to emergency squads in the Newtown, PA area as part of a “Children Helping Children” initiative. These small quilts provide comfort to children in crisis. Marsha commented, “It was a wonderful experience for me to share this project with West Branch students. Their warm and enthusiastic response to helping children was a joy to see.” The seven “Crayon Quilts” were on display at the school during the Grandparents’ Tea. Grandparents play an integral role in WBS families as well as in the running of the school. Grandparents
