Vehicle Registration

Getting a vehicle is always an exciting adventure. It doesn’t matter if it is your first car or if you have already owned many vehicles in the past, making the decision to purchase a car is a big step, and it must be given careful consideration to avoid any inconveniences.

Whenever you purchase a car, whether it is new or used, it must be registered through New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission to be legally driven in the state. Additionally, when you change your residential address from one state to another, you have to follow the proper procedure to successfully transfer your registration.

The entire process may seem very complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. The Road Advisors will guide you through each step of your path towards registering your vehicle. You will also learn how to transfer your registration from another state and how to renew your vehicle registration even when you are out of state.

The Road Advisors will help you prepare all the documents and forms you need to register your car. Just sit back and relax while we guide you towards getting your vehicle registration.

Registration Insurance Requirements

Before you start the whole registration process, you should know that every car in New Jersey is required to have liability insurance in order to be legally driven on any NJ road or highway.

This is vital since you must carry proof of it at all times and you may be requested to show it by a law enforcer or if you have a traffic accident. Furthermore, you will definitely need proof of insurance in order to register your car or renew your registration.

Why do you need insurance? The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) needs to ensure that you are protected in case you are part of an accident that may cause injuries, damages or death.

There are three types of coverage required in New Jersey:

Tip Check the Department of Banking and Insurance website for information about the different insurance coverages.

Liability insurance: It covers others for damages caused by you in case you are responsible for an accident. This can be in the form of bodily injury liability or property damage liability coverage. However, property damage liability is required while bodily injury liability is provided as an option. Property damage liability insurance must cover no less than $5,000 per accident.

Personal injury protection (PIP): It covers medical expenses for you or others in case you or any other driver covered by your policy is injured in a car accident. It is commonly known as No Fault Coverage, because it covers your medical expenses regardless of whether you were or were not at fault. The minimum coverage is $15,000 per person, per accident.

Uninsured motorist coverage: It protects you in case you have an accident with someone who is not properly covered by insurance. The minimum coverage amount is determined by your property damage liability coverage.

If you are caught driving without insurance, or without the minimum coverage required, you will be subject to receiving a traffic violation, additional fines and possibly even suspension of your driver’s license.

Registering Your Vehicle in New Jersey

Congratulations! If you are reading this it is because you are just about ready to use your new car for the first time, and you are only one step closer to being able to freely drive it on any NJ street.

No matter if your car is new, used or if you are out of state or on active duty, here you will find all the information you need to register you vehicle. Simply gather some documents, stick to the following steps according to your specific situation and you will have your registration in no time.

Important dates or timeframes You have 10 days to register a new vehicle after you buy it.

Register a New Vehicle Usually, if you bought your new car at a dealership, you will not have to worry about titling and registering since the dealership must take care of that process. Therefore, the dealership will submit most of the required documentation to the MVC. You also have the option to transfer your registration from a previous vehicle you owned to your new vehicle and still use the same license plates. Click here to see the various registration and title fees for vehicles in New Jersey.

Drivers who own new passenger vehicles are required to enroll in the Four-year Accelerated Registration Program. This program requires vehicle owners to pay the full registration fee for a four-year period. Drivers who have leased vehicle must pay the registration fee for the full term of the lease. If a lease term extends beyond a normal calendar period (for example, a lease may last 38 months

instead of 36 months), then the lessee is required to pay for the next full year’s registration.

Tip A vehicle is considered new in New Jersey if it has never been titled before except for the dealer.

The purchaser’s driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification

The MVC will process all documentation and continue with the necessary steps to get your vehicle registered. Your registration will be processed immediately, but you will have to wait a couple of weeks for new license plates. Follow this link to see what registration and title fees are

Proof of New Jersey insurance.

Payment fee, which varies by type of vehicle. License plates are included, and payment can be made by credit card, check, money order or cash.

Updating Your Vehicle Registration

Have you gone through big changes in your life that lead you to change your name or move neighborhoods? Either way, it is essential to keep this information updated in all your MVC documents, which include your registration card.

In case you have never updated your registration card information, and you are looking for guidance on how to do it, you have come to the right place. The only thing you have to do is inform the MVC of these changes and ask them to update your information. To better understand the process and steps you have to take you, follow the steps that best fit your situation below.

Changing Your Name If your name has officially changed, you will be required to change your name on all of your identification documents and cards, including your vehicle registration card. Name changes can only be processed at a physical MVC agency. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission does not process name changes by mail or online. When you visit your nearest MVC office, make sure to bring the following documents:

Your original vehicle registration card

Proof that links the new name to the old name, which includes:

• Marriage certificate• Divorce decree• Court order

Furthermore, you must change your name with the Social Security Administration before you can change your name with the MVC. This is because the MVC accesses data from the Social Security Administration (SSA) to verify your identity, and if you have not changed your name with the SSA first, your information cannot be confirmed.

Any documents you provide to the MVC to verify a change of name must be original, certified copies and possess municipal and/or state seals.

Changing Your Address In the case that you may have recently moved to a new address, it is essential that you update the address on your registration card within one week of moving. All you have to do is stick to the process and once you have completed every step properly, your registration card will be updated. Now, you may choose between changing your address online, in person or by mail. Let’s review the processes below:

Online Changing your address online is the simplest and fastest process, and you can do it from just about anywhere. To be able to change your address online just:

Go to the online change of address application.

Enter your zip code.

Enter your driver’s license number.

Page 16 | MyCarReg.org

Page 17: New Jersey Car Registration - Amazon Web Servicesmycarreg.org.s3.amazonaws.com/.../new-jersey.pdf · 2019-01-02 · you need to register you vehicle. Simply gather some documents,

Enter your Social Security Number.

Enter your new address information.

Confirm your new address.

You will receive a printable receipt in the form of an electronic confirmation letter at the end of your transaction. You should keep your confirmation letter as proof just in case your address change request was not properly processed.

In Person To change your address in person, simply visit your closest MVC office and ask them to update your address. Make sure you bring proof of identification, such as your driver’s license, as well.

By Mail When you elect to request a change of address by mail, you must compile specific information and send it to the MVC. In order for your request to be processed, you must submit the following information:

A signed letter providing the reason for the request (change of address), including the last address on record

A photocopy of a driver’s license or identification card

Proof of the new address, such as a utility bill. Make sure this proof is in the name of the person who is requesting the address change.

Once you have all of the required information, mail it to: New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission Database Corrections Unit 225 East State Street P.O. Box 141 Trenton, NJ 08666

Fees There is no cost to change your name or your address on your registration card. However, if you want a replacement, you will have to pay the replacement fee.

License Plates

Once you register your car in New Jersey, there is a requirement for you to prove that your registration is current and valid by displaying your license plates with their current stickers.

License plates are as important as your driver’s license since they identify your car from other cars. License plates and registration stickers are also issued by the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) of New Jersey when you register your car for the first time or renew your registration.

NJ license plates are white with blue letters and all passenger vehicles must carry one on the front and one on the back of the car. The plates identify what type of registration you have, and in case something happens to you or your car, they work as means of locating it or you through the MVC. Your license plates can be replaced if something happens to them, and you may also get special interest plates. If you move from the state, you may also need to surrender them.

Replacing Your License Plates

In the event that something happens to your license plates, you may rest assured that the MVC will provide you with all the means to replace it as soon as possible and be back on the road. You may only request a license plate replacement in person. Just follow the steps below:

Visit your closest MVC office.

Present your current registration certificate.

Surrender your old plates (if available).

Present your driver’s license or ID.

Pay the $6 replacement fee. The fee is $11 if you had a specialized plate.

In case your license plates are stolen or lost, you must also make an official police report to the municipality where the plates were stolen. You will need to bring the copy of the report to the MVC along with your other documents.

Page 18 | MyCarReg.org

Getting Custom Plates In New Jersey, you will find a wide variety of custom license plates suitable to everybody’s interests. Personalized plates contain a combination of up to seven letters and numbers. Additionally, you may choose a special license plate design, with or without personalized lettering. So far, New Jersey offers six different special plates. The available plates are:

Standard Issue

Wheelchair Symbol Plates and Placards

Personalized Plates

Specialty Plates

Sports Plates

Dedicated Plates: • Organizations • Volunteer Workers • Professions • Special Vehicles• Military Personnel

Customized license plates can easily be ordered online with a MyMVC account number by clicking here. Make sure you have your design chosen beforehand to ensure a quicker process. However, if the vehicle is leased, you must contact the MVC’s Special Plates Unit at 609-292-6500 ex. 5061.

If you choose to order specialized plates, you must fill out a Personalized License Plate Application (Form SP-1). There is an initial $50 processing fee, and there is a $10 annual renewal fee. Exceptions are the USS New Jersey Battleship plate, which costs $15 to renew each year, and the Agriculture plate which is an initial $20 fee with no annual renewal fee.

If you choose to order customized plates by mail or in person, simply download the Personalized License Plate Application and mail it in or drop it off at the nearest MVC agency along with the $50 payment. If you are mailing in your application, send it to the following address:

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission Special Plate Unit P.O. Box 15 Trenton, NJ 08666-0015

Personalized plates, that is license plates with customized letters and numbers, require a one-time fee of $50. If your license plate has been expired for more than two years, then you will pay an additional $50 fee to reinstate the plate. The process for obtaining personalized license plates is the same as obtaining specialty plate designs. Please refer to the information provided above for more guidance.

Surrendering New Jersey License Plates Whenever you have New Jersey plates that are not in use, you must surrender them to the MVC. One example is when something happens to your plates and you need to replace them due to damage or because one of them got lost or stolen. Also, you will need to surrender your license plate if you decide to apply for a special license plate and exchange your standard plate. Another scenario is when you move to another state. Finally, if you no longer need the plates, you will also need to surrender them to the MVC. The process is fairly straightforward, and we will guide you through it.

You may choose to surrender your plates in person by visiting your closest MVC agency. If you choose this option, simply notify the staff at the front desk of your intention,

and he or she will assist you. Once your license plate is surrendered, make sure to obtain a receipt for your records. There are times where charges may be wrongfully linked to those plates, and your receipt can serve as proof you were not in possession of the plates.

If you prefer, you may also surrender your license plates by sending them together with a self-addressed, stamped envelope for receipt over the mail to:

Motor Vehicle Commission P.O. Box 129 Trenton, New Jersey 08666-0129

The self-addressed, stamped envelope serves as means of providing you with a receipt, so make sure you have labeled the envelope with your most current address.

Vehicle Safety Tips

The most important thing before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for any trip you make. This means checking and making any changes to your vehicle or your behavior to make sure that you are able to drive safely at all times.

EMERGENCY KIT One of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items such as water, extra batteries, rope, a First Aid kit, matches, a whistle, etc. During winter months it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves and socks, and a shovel.

Page 21 | MyCarReg.org

WINTER DRIVING One of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area that snows. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter.

Don’t Rush!

Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows, so instead of driving fast and risking an accident in your rush to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive slower and help to avoid rushing other drivers by not tailgating them if they are going slower.

Don’t Panic If You Skid or Slip

In the case that your vehicle does ski or slip while driving make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. Instead all you need to do is apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you even leave your house make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze and exhaust are all working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving; this prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

DRINKING AND DRIVING Every year thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. However, this problem can be very easily prevented. It only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking these steps.

Even before you begin drinking you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. In the case that they also become intoxicated, it is important that you arrange to take a taxi. Never allow someone drunk to drive, instead take away their keys and call for alternative transportation.

If you see someone who you suspect is drunk, and they show signs of intoxication while driving such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, breaking erratically or turning abruptly, call 911 and contact authorities immediately. Also make sure to avoid them on the road to ensure your own safety.

USING YOUR PHONE Driving while using your cell phone is one of the most dangerous things you can do. During those few seconds, your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. So, make sure you don’t text, use the internet or take calls while you drive to prevent accidents as best as possible.

THINGS TO AVOID Driving isn’t always a relaxing experience. There are certain actions that can be both an annoyance and dangerous to you while on the road driving. These things are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them as well as stopping them after you discover them to be occurring.

Car Accidents The best way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. to do this you only need to regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions

are checked by a mechanic and will not fail while you drive, especially at high speeds.

Wasting Gas As the price of gas goes up you may begin to start looking for ways to save on those expensive trips to the pump. Well, saving on gas is possible if you take a few steps towards ensuring you waste less gas.

Some of the ways you can start saving gas are not using air conditioning, not leaving your engine running, or speeding above 60 mph. These things are preventable and not necessary for you to drive, therefore you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly, you can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated, your engine is well tuned and check that your octane level is the correct amount to your vehicle’s needs.

Aggressive Driving Aggressive driving and drivers are both things that should be avoided to prevent any on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as aggressive tailgating, verbal or physically harassing another driver, preventing another driver from merging or passing. However, if you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive you should instead take for a moment, breathe and continue moving.
