Origins

New Jersey was originally settled in 1623

New Jersey was settled by the Dutch

In 1664 the Duke of York made a proprietary grant to Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley of the land between the Hudson and the Delaware River

Carteret and Berkeley bribed settlers to come in by promising them freedom of religion

They intended to make great profit from the real estate of this land

They named this state New Jersey for the governor Carteret, who governed the Isle of Jersey

Continued.. Due to constant disturbances between Carteret and his settlers

the land was sold to John Fenwick and Edward Byllynge in 163 for 5,000 dollars

However, shortly after due to bankruptcy the land was passed down to William Penn

In 1676 the land divided into two parts

East New Jersey remained land owned by Carteret and the Quakers

Finally in 1787 New Jersey was the third state to ratify the constitution

In the late 70’s when Edmund Andros was governor of New York he tried to take over New Jersey and imprisoned Carteret

Judges decided Andros had no right to do this and since New Jersey has been governed on its own

Social AspectsNew Jersey consisted of of very heavy farming

The New Jersey settlers did not concern themselves much with government matters but instead kept constantly trying to better their farming skills

New Jersey had a very friendly relationship with the Indians

There were no Indian wars in the settlement and the settlers from New Jersey profited from good trade relations with the Indians

People mainly spent most of their time working

Children today do not usually work however, people at during colonial times worked often with their family

There was forms of entertainment though, people played games and there’s talk of a game with a ball and a stick
