Avenue of the Giants Run – June 25-28, 2009 Ed Clerkin

10 Corvettes formed a colorful Caravan up to the Redwoods in Northern California. We had outstanding participation that included Frank & Barbara LoMonaco, Fred & Sharon Smith, Jim Wafer & Judy Lundburg, Thore Edgren & guest Patti, Al & Mona Rotella, Roger Hoyt, Bob & Inge Stallings, Dennis & Sandy Higgins, Kim VanMeter & Richard Steele and Ed Clerkin. Our newest members Kim VanMeter and Richard Steel did a fantastic job keeping up with the group even during our spirited drive across Highway 36!

Our first overnight stay was at the recently remodeled Inn Marin in Novato. The remodel is a nice upgrade and Rickey’s Restaurant on the premises dished out a quality meal. Our final destination was Benbow Inn near Garberville for the re-maining 2 nights. We were even lucky enough to hear live jazz playing on the back patio of Benbow Inn both nights dur-ing our stay. We also congratulated Frank and Barbara Lo-Monaco on their 41st Wedding Anniversary during dinner @ Benbow Inn! Avenue of the Giants Redwoods…all I can say is WOW! There are absolutely no other words that can empha-size their natural beauty. It’s truly eye candy for those looking

to get away for a weekend. After our run up the Avenue, we then proceeded to the historic town of Fern-dale. Fred and Sharon wanted to get a photo of their newest car in front of an old barn so we all decided to join in on a group photo. We then headed downtown and wandered around the old Victorian town on foot. Fred and Sharon lead us into an old Mercantile store that still sells items dating back to the early 1900’s. Judy spied an old hand washing machine that she wanted to buy but there was no price tag on it. We then rounded up the group and veered off Highway 101 South onto SR-36 for a run to Mad River. This is an amazingly well maintained road with a lot of twists and turns interwoven among even more redwoods. After that exercise, we wandered back down 101 to Avenue of the Gi-ants again and ended our day at our final destination Riverwood Inn for dinner. If you have never been here before, it’s one of the last remaining roadhouse bar and grill’s off Highway 101. They now have a Mexican Restaurant at the rear of the building and the bar/dance floor at the front. If you are lucky, Popeye may greet you at the front door on the way in (me thinks he is the local drunk hanging out on the front porch).

Hope everyone is doing well and you are having a great summer! Already 1/3 of the way through it, and football starts in a month. This is a great time to get our vette’s out and enjoy our fabulous weather and scenery, although I would stay away from 154 and Figueroa Rd in Los Olivos for a while! Our meeting attendance and those staying for dinner has been down lately. Would like to have 30+ attend and stay for dinner; Jake puts out a great spread for a very very reasonable price .. actually we haven’t found anything better. So I invite you to come out to the meetings, stay for dinner, and enjoy the Corvette conversations, the people, and the at-mosphere. Advanced notice – there will be no meeing in September 2009. Hope to see you next Tuesday.

Installation Picnic Al Rotella If you missed the Installation Picnic on June 7th, you missed a good time with good food - good friends and beautiful weather. Being my first picnic to organ-ize, I’d like to thank Diane Szalay for taking on the raffle prizes again; Claudia Whitney for her advice and help (and she really enjoyed way too much asking how I was enjoying organizing the picnic) and the LoMonaco’s for bringing the supplies and storing the left over supplies. I especially want to thank our great crew and chefs who worked hard the morning of the picnic getting things ready for our day. Bob Wheeler and Steve Petersen were our main chef’s who cooked some great food for us. They were assisted by Fred Lopez, Bob Stallings and Bob Szalay who got there early to make sure the area was all cleaned up. The only glitch was when a house just behind our area caught fire and caused a lot of smoke which took away from the aroma of our BBQ. The fire department put it out quickly, and we were back to normal, if there is such a thing with this group. Anyway, thanks to all who helped out that day. People just came up and offered help as we needed it. That’s why we enjoy being with this group of friends. Last but not least, thanks to Mona for putting up with all my nervousness in get-ting things organized, and especially for her great marinade that made the tri-tip and chicken all the more special. (for recipe see page 7)

After the parade and the car show on State Street, club mem-bers drove up Garden Street and entered the backyard of Frank and Barbara LoMonaco's house. After parking their cars on the lawn, club members climbed the stairs to the deck and claimed their spaces to relax for the rest of the af-ternoon. Frank's fabulous Margaritas were very popular and disappeared quickly - as usual. The BBQ dinner followed - with an all-American menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, etc., being served. A huge THANK YOU goes to John LoMonaco, son of Frank and Barbara, who drove up from Los Angeles and did most of the cooking. We do appreciate all of his ef-forts - we

couldn't have done it without him. We do think that the most popular food item, by far, were the Kettle potato chips. Basket after basket after basket after bas-ket disappeared. Why could we not keep those baskets filled? Although no one admitted to eating any of them, they were delicious!! - hmmm, must have been those po-tato chip fairies out in force! After dessert and a long af-ternoon of great fun, great food, and great friends, the happy crowd slowly descended the stairs, back down to their cars, and drove off into the sunset. A wonderful time was had by all.

Fourth of July 2009 Party Barbara LoMonaco

We had 24 Cars show up for the Parade this year. The weather was beautiful and the crowds were just huge. Everyone seemed to be having a great day including us. Participating this year were Jacques & Yuriko Belle-siles, Bobby Arroyo, Ed Clerkin, Thore Edgren & Pia, Alan & Carol Emslie, Sandy & Hib Halverson (2), Roger Hoyt, Jerry & Dotty Livers, Frank & Barbara LoMonaco (3), Fred & Anne Lopez, Bryce Lovett, Fred Markley, Tony & Paula Megowan, Steve Peter-sen, Thomas “JT” Richter, Al & Mona Rotella, Fred & Sharon Smith, Andrew & Danielle Spitz (2), Robert & Evie Wheeler and Lee & Claudia Whitney. At the end of the Parade route most of us parked for an hour or so to display our cars and meet with the folks of

Santa Barbara that had enjoyed our rainbow of colors. We then all packed up and headed for the LoMonaco’s to continue to celebrate the 2009 Fourth of July in the style we have become accustomed to.

Bernstein’s Restaurant Recipe Italian Dressing Teriyaki marinade Worcestershire sauce Tri-tip About 3 days before the barbeque: Place tri-tip in a shallow baking dish (I usually use a glass one). Pour dressing in the dish until it comes about ½ way up the side of the meat. Add about half as much teriyaki. Add a few shakes of the Worcester-shire sauce. Place in the refrigerator and turn the meat twice a day. On the morning of the barbeque, re-move the container from the refrigera-tor and place on a kitchen counter. Turn the meat several times that day, about once every 1 to 2 hours until it’s time to cook it.
