Precision without compromisesThe grinding and polishing system for materialographic samples
Making the invisible visible ...Two of the most important aspects of
materialographic testing are causal
research and investigating the safe-
ty of materials. The aim of materialo-
graphic testing is always to produce
reliable information regarding the
character of or changes in the sam-
ples under investigation. Material
properties, alloys, bonding between
coats or the influence of external
forces, the hidden aspects of a sur-
face or of bonded materials, all of
this and more must be made visible
up to the smallest particle.
The area of new materials has been undergoing some inte-resting developments in recent years. Increasingly thinner coa-tings and extreme differences in hardness within just one singlesample now require the employment of special individual pre-parative methods. Optimum surface preparation is of vitalimportance when it comes to deriving information about a ma-terial when performing material tests. The properties of a mate-rial can only be reliably determined if samples are processed tothe highest quality standards. The reliability of materials is ofutmost importance – because they form the basis of the futuresuccess of a product.
Heraeus Kulzer is more than a reliable partner when it comesto competence in surface and materials testing. We have beendeveloping innovate systems for materials testing for decades. Our main objective – to offer products to the highest qualitystandards – is the driving force behind our motivation to furt-her develop our test materials and procedures. This is also whymany of our well-known customers rely on Heraeus Kulzer’ssystems to provide reliable information regarding materials andhence to ensure the success of their products.

Less effort and better results ...NEW LAM formula-02 is a system
with excellent characteristics: Before
a new sample is ready for testing, a
range of different processes must be
performed. Heraeus Kulzer has been
working on the development of the
NEW LAM system over a period of
several years to be able to offer cus-
tomers a perfectly balanced as well
as cost-efficient solution to these
processes. This task has now been
successfully accomplished with the
NEW LAM formula-02. All of the NEW
LAM components perfectly comple-
ment each other, and, with the
CAMEO Platinium range, we are also
offering a range of pre-grinding
discs that can be perfectly integra-
ted into the NEW LAM system. We
are offering a sophisticated range of
components which allows to prepare
nearly all materials efficiently for
surface testing.
Heraeus Kulzer’s consistently high
product quality is assured and con-
stantly improved through strict qual-
ity standards.
An overview of Heraeus Kulzer’s products: We offer a clearlystructured and comprehensive laboratory program with high-quality solutions for all requirements regarding precision surface preparation. You, the customer, profit from efficientmethods and an individual step-by-step program. The result: A reduction of the processes required for samplepreparation and less material consumption – an efficient system that produces high-quality metallographic specimens.

Microscope scan: Stainless, austenitic steel with a minimumof 17% chrome. Area of appli-cation: aircraft construction forparts that are subjected to a lotof stress such as undercarriages. The image shows a brittle Sigma-Phase in the austenitic structureof a high-alloy steel. The increase in volume thatoccurs during the formation of aSigma-Phase gives rise to inter-nal cracks, which means that, due to the embrittlement, opti-mum quality cannot be assured.
Efficient sample preparation canprovide a lot of informationregarding the quality of a mate-rial and its response when practi-cally applied. Defects or sourcesof danger, e.g. due to the unde-sired formation of phase separa-tions, material fatigue or fatigueloading, can therefore be elimi-nated right from the outset. Theadvantages for developers andquality assurers are obvious: re-liable information and perfectresults!

The insights gained regarding the structure of a material whenusing the NEW LAM formula-02 system for sample preparationare without equal when it comes to reliability and informationalvalue. The surfaces are structurally stable, do not include bro-ken components and no foreign bodies and the thickness ofindividual layers in the peripheral zone can be measured withprecision. The NEW LAM formula-02 removes surfaces verygently and without distorting or eliminating any structures. Dueto the excellent edge definition, layers can be recognised withgreat precision under the microscope.Even samples that have not been embedded can – form andsize permitting – be processed with the NEW LAM formula-02system and are excellently defined in comparison to conven-tional metallographic specimen preparations.

NEW LAM classic Polishing cloths
Polishing cloth yellow
A hard cloth made of synthetic fibres. This cloth is predominantly used to prepolish ductile materials such as titanium and when using the blue (12 µm) or green (9 µm) BioDiamant liquids.
Polishing cloth orange
This is a medium-hard cloth made of natural fibres that can be used on abroad range of materials. This cloth isused in conjunction with the yellow (6 µm), orange (3 µm), red (1µm) andthe MM 140 (1 µm) BioDiamant liquids.
Polishing cloth red
This is a soft cloth with a flocked synthe-tic fibre surface for final polishing. This cloth is used in conjunction with thered (1µm) BioDiamant liquid and theFinal liquid. Also suitable for etch polish-ing.
Depending on the model, these clothscan easily be placed on and removedfrom the different exchange systems –fast and without creasing or leavingbehind residues. All NEW LAM classic polishing cloths areavailable with self-adhesive or metallicbacks for direct adaptation to magneticsystems. By providing these different surface properties, this system enablescustomers’ to reduce their assortment of cloths to just a few.
Note
Our product range includes the mostimportant MM-range polishing cloths forlong-standing standardised preparationprocedures. Supplied upon request.
Cleaning
The cloths can be cleaned under runningwater and by using a little washing-upliquid.
Applying the CAMEO DISK
The CAMEO DISK’s are used for fine-grinding soft to very hard metallographicsamples. The choice between using theCAMEO DISK silver or gold depends onthe material properties of the sample.Together with the BioDiamant liquidsand the corresponding polishing clothesof the NEW LAM formula-02 system,CAMEO DISK’s guarantee fast samplepreparation with optimum surface flat-ness and excellent finishes.
Automatic preparation
In order to ensure that the samples areperfectly flat and that material isremoved evenly when using the CAMEODISK, the specimen holder is positionedin such a way that the sample protrudesa few millimetres (max. 1/3 of the sam-ple’s diameter) over the active workingface of the disc on the inside and out-side.
Manual preparation
When using the CAMEO DISK’s manual-ly, it must be ensured that the discs areapplied evenly. In order to ensure thatthe discs wear evenly, the samples aremoved from the edge of the disc to themiddle during the grinding process.
Polishing agent
The CAMEO DISK’s are used in conjunc-tion with the diamond liquids. Whenusing the CAMEO DISK silver, it is recom-mended to use 12-6 µm diamond liquids. The CAMEO DISK gold should be used inconjunction with diamond liquidsbetween 12-3 µm. When selecting thediamond liquids, the properties of thesample material must be taken into con-sideration. The diamond liquids must besprayed-on at regular intervals.
Cleaning
In order to preserve the efficiency of theCAMEO DISK’s, it is recommended toclean the respective disc every time afteruse under running water with a brushand dry it by using compressed air.

BioDiamant liquids are abrasive agentsthat contain diamond grit. They not onlyefficiently meet the high quality stan-dards associated with abrasive agentsbut also all of the relevant health regula-tions and are environmentally friendly.
Advantages
- more efficient than conventional diamond suspensions
- perfectly suitable for use on machines or for manual application
- high diamond concentration- low grit-size distribution- Non-toxic
All of Heraeus Kulzer diamond liquids, including the BioDiamant liquids, areused without additional lubricatingagents, and therefore ensure consistentand reproducible quality and significant-ly reduce expenditures. This furthermoreensures that the same high number ofdiamonds is applied every time the liquidis used and that the suspension is notdiluted in any way.
In order to assure the high quality of anabrasive agent, its individual compo-nents, such as lubricating agents, consis-tency, form and size of diamond parti-cles, must be ideally adapted to oneanother. The tight tolerance regardinggrit size distribution has a particularlydecisive influence on the quality of theliquids. BioDiamant abrasive agents fulfilall of these requirements. In addition to the colour-coded liquids,Heraeus Kulzer also supplies the specialMM 140 liquid, an unpigmented abra-sive agent, and a diamond paste, theDiamant stick. All BioDiamant liquidscan be sprayed-on by using the dosingdevices of grinding machines, or by usingmanually operated spray bottles.

BioDiamant liquidsare biodegradableand non-toxic. Thanksto the tightly gradedgrit sizes, the diffe-rent BioDiamant liquids complementeach other perfectly.
Why chose BioDiamant?
The development and manufacture ofbiodegradable products is becoming anincreasingly important issue, not leastbecause of companies endeavour tomeet environmental guidelines.
This endeavour, however, goes hand inhand with a belief that biodegradableproducts do not pose any threats tohealth. Organic molecules can, however,be environmentally friendly and still betoxic for humans.
Many abrasive agents contain additivesthat guarantee that the product is highlyefficient. Some of these additives (e.g.Glycol-ether) are toxic – even when usedin small quantities – and contain harmfulsubstances. Glycol-ethers, for example, are liquid substances that are hydrophilic(water-soluble) as well as lipophilic (oil-soluble). These are excellent solutionsthat enable manufacturers to combinesubstances that can usually not be mixedwith one another. Glycol-ethers are highlybiodegradable, but also highly toxic.
In an endeavour to avoid the risksassociated with handling abrasiveagents on a daily basis by touchingthem and inhaling their vapours,Heraeus Kulzer has managed to re-place Glycol-ethers with a totally non-toxic substance by developing theBioDiamant products. All of the com-ponents of the BioDiamant productscomply with the European 1999/45/ECand 2000/59/EC standards.
We have therefore achieved our aim ofoffering highly efficient products to ourcustomers that do not pose any threatsto health or the environment.

Specimen holder
The manual specimen holder is an impor-tant aid for target preparations. Itreduces the danger of over-grinding andthe number of microscopic controls to aminimum. The manual specimen holder is designedfor polished sections as well as for thinsections (holder or insert H). Thin sec-tions can be fixated with “Canada Balm”or a drop of water or oil.It is possible to achieve a defined rate ofmaterial removal by using the vernieradjustment at the setting ring of thespecimen holder. The setting ring pre-vents specified values from beingchanged during the grinding processes. The ceramic ring guarantees that materi-al is securely removed to the requiredextent and prevents over-grinding. Thissystem ensures that all of the growingrequirements of target preparation inmetallography, mineralogy and histologyare met to perfection.
The specimen holder can be used formany conventional sample diameters (40 mm = standard, 32 mm, 30 mm, 25 mm = special). By using differentadapters (32mm/30mm/25mm) thestandard specimen holder can beapplied for a correspondingly diverserange of applications.
