SINGAPORE: The Nanyang Technological University has implemented a new learning format that leverages technology for its Renaissance Engineering Programme. The programme bridges engineering, business and the liberal arts to engage students in active learning and critical thinking. Students are taught using teambased learning. The new format uses mobile technology such as iPads and has students learning in small groups. The pilot started last August for Year 1 students and will officially be implemented starting with the incoming August intake. Teambased learning will comprise 30 per cent of the curriculum. The university plans to increase this to up to 60 per cent of the curriculum by 2017. Professor Teoh Swee Hin, director of the Renaissance Engineering Programme at Nanyang Technological University, said: “It has been said that every time a lecturer gives a standard lecture, the students will remember no more than 10 per cent. But in teambased learning, it has been shown that more than 60 per cent of retention in the knowledge and application when they discuss has been achieved." Said Mr Jonathan Tan, a student of the Renaissance Engineering Programme: "I think teambased learning with the Renaissance Engineering Programme has transformed the way we learn. "During lessons, we have to collaborate with one another and we get to input our diverse opinions on the matter, so it allows us to tackle highlevel problems which we will struggle to do alone.
