the Revd Dr Jenny King) that lead us through the week.

On Maundy Thursday, we hear of the last night of Jesus’ life. We re-enact his command by performing the washing of feet. We celebrate the Eucharist, but then the church enters disarray as the church is stripped of its decorations in the same way that Jesus was stripped of his clothes. We then keep a vigil of prayer until midnight.

On Good Friday, we are in a time of sadness. We mark the day with three consecutive services at different churches: we start at East Barnet Baptist Church, then move to Barnet Brookside Methodist Church, then climb the hill to St Mary’s. Along the way we tell the story of Jesus’ death and pray for the whole world.

On Easter Eve, we celebrate the Resurrection by night. This is the Easter Vigil, where we tell the story of God turning death into new life. It is a great celebration (and we end it with a glass or two of sparkling wine).

On Easter morning, we have an All-Age Eucharist, which finishes with Easter eggs.

It is a marvellous and moving week. Why not come along and participate? Come and understand the great purpose of God: life for all the world.

Christmas is full of celebration, with food, family, terrible television and all kinds of parties and festivities.

It is obviously a very important time of year for Christians. But it is not the most important time...

The centre of the Christian faith is the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the events that are celebrated in Holy Week and Easter.

This is the core of the Christian faith: that Jesus rose from the dead so that we might all have new life, in this world and in the next.

The events of Holy Week and Easter are a wonderful time in church, because we tell the great story of the redemption of the world. We tell the story of the transformation of the world and the new hope that God gives. St Mary’s tells this story in a beautiful, traditional way.

Holy Week begins on the Sunday before Easter, with Palm Sunday. We begin with the blessing of palms outside the church, then process into church as we re-enact Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Once in church, we hear the story of his Passion (which means ‘suffering’) and death on the Cross.

On the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week, we gather each evening to celebrate the Eucharist and hear addresses (given this year by

“We’re the Harry Potter generation.”

That’s what I was told a couple of years ago by a 13-year-old. I was, frankly, outraged. She wasn’t even born when the first Harry Potter book came out.

In fact, the first Harry Potter book came out in 1997, when I was at primary school. The novels came out all through my childhood, with the last one published just before I went to university. (On the day it was published, my sister and I both read the book cover-to-cover, even though we only had one copy and it is 607 pages long. We were pretty dedicated.)

So, really, if anyone has a claim to be the Harry Potter generation, it’s me.

It is a wonderful series of books. Partly this is because it is wonderfully written, with fabulous characters, places and creatures. It is witty and intelligent.

But its brilliance doesn’t really lie in these things. Its brilliance comes from the story.

From one point of view it seems like a typical children’s fantasy story:

good fights evil, with wizards and spells and trolls and magical items. Good fights evil and ultimately the good side wins.

That might seem like most stories ever written, especially for children.

But that is, I think, a little unfair. It’s much more interesting than that.

Despite the hysterics of many American Christians, the books do not promote witchcraft, or indeed “paganism” however that is defined.

In fact, they are thoroughly Christian books – perhaps reflecting the Christianity of the author, J. K. Rowling. They speak of the power of love and goodness and self-sacrifice. They speak of souls, and of a level of reality beyond the visible world. They speak, ultimately, of the redemption of sin and of hope.

They are thoroughly Christian books.

They are also in many ways derivative. They are not terribly novel, either in their themes or in

much of the imaginary world in which they are set.

But I don’t think this is a problem, either for the Harry Potter books or for the many other derivative works that exist in our culture.

Being original is overrated.I was with a group of priest

friends last year on a retreat at a monastery in Kent. We were given some advice on preaching by the leader of the retreat. He said “Don’t say new things. Say important things.”

This is good advice, not only for preachers but for our whole culture.

Today’s world is obsessed with novelty. There is a constant desire to make new things and to tell new stories. Anything old must be outdated and worth throwing away.

In April, St Mary’s does what we have been doing for the last 900-odd years: telling the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is not a novel story. We don’t need to make up a new story every year.

It doesn’t matter that it isn’t a new story: it’s the most important story of all.

Martha’s life hacksTraditionally this is a time for gardening and DIY, so here are some tips to help.

To retain moisture and deter weeds around your plants, lay down several sheets of newspaper (not glossy magazine type paper) and cover with wood mulch to prevent it blowing away. You can also add small quantities to your compost heap to reduce the smell and encourage earthworms.

Place large water-filled plastic bottles round the edges of netting to keep it in place.

To target weedkiller on a weed and protect the plants around it, cut a plastic bottle in half and put the top half over the weed. Then spray the weedkiller through the neck of the bottle. Don’t forget to wear goggles and gloves when dealing with chemicals in the garden.

Salt is a very effective weedkiller, too. Dissolve 200g of salt in 400ml of boiling water, then pour it on to any weeds growing in cracks in your patio or path where there are weeds. Or put salt directly onto the

weed and sprinkle it with water.Salt barriers are also a deterrent

to snails and slugs.Place a few used teabags on top

of the drainage layer at the bottom of a container before potting. The tea bags will retain moisture and give good nutrients to the soil.

Empty your teapot onto the compost heap to speed up the decomposition process and enrich the compost.

WD40 can be sprayed evenly over flower beds to keep animals away from it. The smell deters them from digging the plants up! It can also deter pigeons.

When you are painting, cover door knobs with aluminium foil, both in the room you are working on and along the route to the sink where you will be washing your hands afterwards. This should help you paint right up to the edge of the doorknob!

Foil or clingfilm can cut down on brush cleaning time. Squeeze out excess paint and wrap the brush tightly, using a rubber band to

secure it if you used foil. You can even put the wrapped brush in the freezer for a while, but don’t forget to defrost it before using it again!

Paper plates make very good stands for paint pots and brushes.

Store leftover paint in plastic bottles, together with a couple of marbles or polished glass. Label the bottle with the paint manufacturer, colour name and date. When you want to use the paint, the marbles will help you mix the paint when you shake the container.

Vinegar is very useful when you are decorating. It can be used to coat a cement floor, or galvanised metal. Then leave it to dry before painting it. The paint will stick much better and should not peel so easily.

Use a vinegar solution (equal parts white vinegar and water) to spray onto wallpaper until it is saturated, wait a few minutes and then use a scraper to remove it.

Put shallow containers filled with neat white vinegar in a freshly painted room to get rid of the fumes.

A spring concertBarnet Choral Society’s Spring concert will take place in East Barnet School, Chestnut Grove on Saturday April 8 at 7.30pm.

There are two major works being performed: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony and Poulenc’s Gloria. Soloists are Emily Armour (soprano) and Rene Bloice-Sanders (baritone) The choir will be accompanied by the Amadeus Orchestra and conducted by their director of music, Richard Brain.

A Sea Symphony was written between 1903 and 1909 and was the composer’s first major work. The movements follow

a fairly standard outline for the symphony. The text comes from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. In the Grove article on Vaughan Williams, Ottaway and Frogley call the work: “…a triumph of instinct over environment. The tone is optimistic, Whitman’s emphasis on the unity of being and the brotherhood of man comes through strongly, and the vitality of the best things in it has proved enduring. Whatever the indebtedness to Parry and Stanford, and in the finale to Elgar, there is no mistaking the physical exhilaration or the visionary rapture.”

Poulenc’s Gloria is one of his most celebrated works. It was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation. Its first performance was on 21 January 1961 in Boston, Massachusetts.

In the work he expresses a wide range of emotions, from lyrical serenity to playful exuberance.

The choir’s excellent uncut Messiah last November will be a tough act to follow, but this concert also promises to be a great performance.

Tickets are £12 and are available from the box office on 07402 591 966.

The Christian Friendship FellowshipThere are many single Christians in churches, and current research indicates that almost 40% of the population in the UK will be single (unmarried, widowed or divorced) by 2020.

Many of these will be in churches, and some of them may want a place to go for Christian fellowship where – like them – the people are single.

The Christian Friendship Fellowship (or CFF for short) is interdenominational, and addresses this need of people on their own by putting them in touch with local groups, thereby helping both the development of their Christian faith and their need for social contact. Today 25 local groups meet in areas around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Activities such as meals out, walks, Bible studies, visits to theatres or concerts, prayer and praise nights, listening to speakers, ten pin bowling etc are generally

planned for Friday evenings or for sometime on a Saturday, and a few groups even arrange a short holiday so that group members can enjoy a longer time together. Some groups meet weekly, others bi-monthly or once a month, with the members (or a committee) planning the programme.

In 2016 the CFF celebrated

40 years in existence, and many people have found their lives enriched by being members – at present, membership costs £10 a year.

A new group has recently started in the Barnet area. For further information contact Basma at [email protected] or phone her on 07903 212 090 from 10am – 8pm.

To find out where other groups meet around the country, please get in touch with me. I am the Chairman of the CFF Trustees and Honorary CEO, and can be contacted on 0141 334 0009 from 9.30am till 10pm (but not between 2 and 6pm, please), by email on [email protected] or by post to CFF Enquiries, PO Box 16881, Glasgow, G11 9EF.

Or check out the website at www.christianfriendshipfellowship.org.uk to see where there are groups meeting and enjoying Christian fellowship together.

1471 and all that: the Battle of BarnetThree kings, swirling fog, a storm of arrows, new-fangled hand-guns and one side attacking their own men – this was the 1471 Battle of Barnet!

English Heritage describes it as “one of the most important battles” of the Wars of the Roses, an English civil war over who should be king.

The claimants were Edward IV, of the house of York, and Henry VI, of the house of Lancaster. By the time the two sides lined up at Barnet, both men had been crowned and re-crowned; Edward was just back from exile and Henry was his hostage.

Henry’s army was commanded by the powerful Earl of Warwick – who had previously been Edward’s right-hand-man! After helping Edward become king, Warwick was frustrated by Edward ignoring his advice, and ended up joining the Lancastrian cause. Edward was forced into exile and Henry re-crowned – earning Warwick the title ‘Kingmaker’.

The battleThe two armies met to the north

of Chipping Barnet on a foggy Easter Sunday morning in 1471, and misaligned their forces in the mist: at each end of the battle line, one side outflanked the other. At the end where the Lancastrians had the numerical advantage, they overwhelmed their opponents, chased them into Barnet and started looting. At the opposite end, the Yorkists too used their greater numbers to push the opposing troops back.

These two forward thrusts in opposite directions at each end of the line led to each side gradually rotating 90°. The looting soldiers were unaware of this realignment; they now returned and, in the belief it was the rear of Edward’s army, attacked their own side. Cries of betrayal rang out, and this was easily believed in a conflict in which changes of allegiance were

Fiona Jonescommon.

In the chaos that ensued, Edward’s Yorkist army gradually prevailed. Even more significantly, Warwick was killed. This consolidated Edward’s kingship. Two weeks later, at Tewkesbury, he defeated another Lancastrian army, after which he reigned for another twelve years with little opposition.

Richard IIIThe third king mentioned at the

start was the future Richard III, at the time the 18-year-old Duke of Gloucester, fighting his first battle. He was a commander in his brother Edward IV’s army.

Rediscovering the battleWe know the battle was fought

just north of Chipping Barnet, but the exact site has been debated for centuries. Now, battlefield archaeologist Sam Wilson has begun the search using metal detecting, geophysics, excavation and landscape archaeology.

Alongside the archaeological research, the Battle of Barnet

The next table-top sale at St Mary’s Church will take place on 6 May 2017 between 2 and 4pm.

The table-top sales are always a good occasion: lots of people come with a variety of new and pre-loved items for sale at excellent prices.

Perhaps you would like to have a table yourself! Do you have bits and pieces around the house that other people could use? Perhaps you need to make some more space or are moving somewhere new.

Tables cost £10; you keep all the proceeds.

If you are interested in hiring a table for the afternoon, please contact the Parish Office (see back cover for contact details.)

Bees in the hiveBarnet FC News with Margaret Cranfield

A new gent in the dugoutHenry Newman left the club in February and Rossi Eames is now working alongside the new Head Coach, Kevin Nugent.

Kevin was born in Edmonton 47 years ago and attended St Ignatius College, Enfield. He played as a striker at Leyton Orient, Plymouth Argyle, Bristol City and Cardiff, before returning to Orient and then to Swansea City, where he also became assistant manager. Since February 2007 he has been a caretaker manager at Swansea, Orient and Charlton Athletic. The club chairman Tony Kleanthous has made the following statement to fans:

“Kevin Nugent is a highly respected coach within the game and comes to us with a wealth of experience at our level of football. He has been highly recommended as the man to help us with the task at hand, and we welcome his decision to join us.

He will slot into our management structure, ably assisted by Rossi Eames, and they will be continuing with the recent progress… There will inevitably be a period of transition with some highs and lows.

“Of course it goes without saying that our number one aim is to get promoted this year, so the brief as always is to get results – we want to get to League One and we are still in with a chance. We appreciate the support and backing of our fans and hope you will continue to back us through this rebuilding phase. There is a lot going on here at The Hive and much more to announce over the coming months. We have no intention of standing still…..these are exciting times!”

This is the last full month of this year’s season, so come along to support the Bees in their coming matches. As usual, please see the club website for information about

Town. Luke Gambin now plays for the Hatters, who beat us 1–3 when we travelled to them in December. They are currently in a playoff position, so it will be a tough game.

Good Friday 14 Away to Exeter City. Again, our home tie with the Grecians was one to forget when we lost 1–4 in October. However they are near us in the league table, so we have a chance.

Easter Monday 17 Home to Wycombe Wanderers. We beat the Chairboys 2–0 when we played them away last October. However, they are currently in the playoff region of the league, so it should be a testing game.

Saturday 22 Away to Hartlepool United. We beat the Monkey Hangers at home last October when we came back from 0–2 down to win 3–2, much to the

chagrin of Sky Sports’ Jeff Stelling, one of their more famous fans. They are in the lower part of the table.

Saturday 29 Home to Grimsby Town. The Mariners have always been something of a bugbear team for us, and our draw of 2–2 when we played them away in November was one of our better achievements this season. They are in the top half

of the table. This is our last home match of the season.

Saturday May 6 Away to Crewe Alexandra. The Railwaymen drew 0–0 with us at The Hive in November. Off pitch issues have loomed large for them this season and they are in the lower half of the table. This is our final game of the season.

Family mattersA large family group of aunts, uncles and grandparents was an important part of the early years of my life.

Our two sets of grandparents lived at opposite ends of the town: Gran and Grandpa Chedgey to the south and Granny and Grandpa Price to the north. We were frequent visitors to both homes.

In common with many families of those times, my mother and three of her five siblings had remained to live and work in the small market town where they had grown up, so whenever we visited Mum’s family, my brother and I looked forward to seeing not only our grandparents but also our uncle and aunts and we could always be sure of plenty of attention, for they were willing playmates and liked nothing better than to entertain us with all kinds of jigsaw puzzles, board games and stories.

We spent much time with them and were as much at home in their house as we were in our own.

Birthdays, Christmas and other important occasions were always celebrated together, usually with much food, singing and laughter (accompanied by Grandpa pounding out music hall favourites on the piano!) There were also the great aunts and uncles whom we saw less often as they lived further afield, but who were nevertheless an important part of the family group.

It is only as an adult that I fully appreciate how lucky I am to have grown up surrounded by a large and caring family and how important the institution of family is to people’s sense of well-being and belonging.

Recently in the news was the terrible story of the many children who between 1947 and the 1970s, as part of the Child Migrant Programme, were shipped from the

UK around the world to Australia where they suffered unimaginable hardship and abuse.

These children, born to unmarried mothers, were lied to and told that they were orphans, that they had no family: in effect they were denied any sense of belonging or place in society: a crime as heinous in its own way as the abuse. Their childhood was taken from them and the damage cannot be quantified; in some cases it can never be healed.

The need in all of us to put ourselves into context is strong. One woman who was eventually reunited with her mother said, “Now I have an identity and that can never be taken from me again.”

Naturally, in our family, as in any other, there were occasional squabbles and fallings-out, but in times of trouble, these differences were forgotten as the family closed ranks and pulled together. Surely, that is how it should be.

How sad, then, to hear of family

rifts that have remained unhealed for many years; where siblings haven’t spoken to each other for decades and where grievances have been left to fester until time runs out. Equally sad are the cases of those who have no close family or somehow have lost touch with a family member and now are desperately trying to make contact before it is too late

The family gives us that necessary sense of place in the world which enables us to connect more positively with those around us; which helps us understand where we belong. Those of us who are fortunate enough to be part of a family group, with all the ups, downs and complications of familial relationships, should surely see this as a blessing to be valued, cherished and nurtured.

An English classicIs there anything better than toad-in-the-hole?

Maybe there is, but I haven’t found it yet! Toad-in-the-hole with roast potatoes, onion gravy and lightly steamed cabbage is one of my favourite meals all through the year.

Nothing is difficult – though it can be a little fiddly getting everything on the table at the same time! This recipe serves four moderately greedy people.

Roast potatoesIngredients4 Maris Piper potatoes

2 tbsp goose fat2 tsp saltMethod1. Heat the oven to 180°C (350°F).2. Peel the potatoes and cut into evenly sized pieces. Place them into a large saucepan with the salt and cover with water.3. Place the saucepan on the hob and bring to the boil. Simmer for 10 minutes. The potatoes should fluff up slightly if you drag a fork along the surface.4. Place the goose fat into a roasting tin and heat in the oven.5. Drain the water into a bowl

5/18

(keep it for the gravy later). Shake the saucepan around a bit so that the potatoes fluff up on the outside.6. Remove the roasting tin from the oven and (carefully) place the potatoes in the fat. Make sure they are fully covered, then put them back in the oven for an hour, until golden and crispy.

Pinch saltMethod1. Put the sunflower oil into your cooking dish (glass or ceramic is best) and heat in the oven.2. Once the oil is heated, prick the sausages and cook them in the dish for 25 minutes.3. Meanwhile, make the batter. Sift the flour, add the salt and beat in the eggs. I do this by hand, but you may prefer to use a mixer. Then add the milk slowly until a smooth and fairly liquid batter is formed. You may not need all the milk – or you may need to add a little more!4. Remove the dish from the oven. Immediately pour the batter over and around the sausages, then put back in the oven for another 25 minutes, until the batter has puffed up and is golden.

Onion gravyIngredients2 large white onions, chopped into slices2 cloves garlic, chopped finely1 tbsp sunflower oil1 tbsp plain flour1 tsp mustard powder500ml water from the potatoesPinch saltPepper1 tsp mixed herbs

Method1. Heat the sunflower oil in a large frying pan. Add the onions and, a few minutes later, the garlic.2. Cook until lightly browned. (The longer you cook them, the more intense the flavour – but don’t burn them!)3. Add the mustard powder and

flour and mix in well. Cook for two minutes, stirring constantly.4. Add the mixed herbs, then half the water. Mix thoroughly and bring to a light simmer. Season with salt and pepper.5. Simmer for at least ten minutes (preferably more), adding more water if the gravy is too stiff.
