  • Not long now until you can sit back and enjoy the shows you love.

How to set upJust follow the few simple steps starting on page 4 of this guide.

Set-ups easy and takes less than half an hour.

Need some help?No problem give us a call on 0800 111 4567, go to bt.com/help/tv or check Help & Settings in the main menu.

Important note about your broadbandYour broadband needs to be up and running before you set up BT TV. It might not be up and running until midnight on your broadband activation day. And if youve got a new broadband service, the line needs time to settle usually between three and ten days. Your new BT TV might pause and stutter during this period but dont worry as its only temporary.

  • 3 Think about where to put your BT Vision+ box. You can put it wherever you want, as long as its near:

a TV aerial socket or cable a mains power socket your TV and other TV equipment (e.g. amp or DVD player),

if youre planning to connect them

If youve ordered Extra TV channels, youll need to connect your BT Vision+ box to your BT Home Hub using an Ethernet cable (see the next page). For more about these channels, go to page 26 or bt.com/tvfrombt.

You need a digital TV aerialYour BT Vision+ box needs an aerial that can receive digital TV signals (external or in the loft). If you havent got one (e.g. youve been using satellite or cable TV), call us on 0800 800 150 and, for a small charge, we can fit a new aerial for you.

The digital TV channels you get depend on where you live and the quality of your aerial and cables. If you have trouble watching live or recorded digital programmes, it could be because your aerial or cables need replacing.

For help see pages 2325, call 0800 111 4567 or go to bt.com/help/freeview.

2 Make sure your broadbands working properly (your Hubs Broadband or status light should be glowing steady blue. If it isnt, see your BT Broadband User Guide at bt.com/help/broadband).

Dont worry if your BT Home Hub looks slightly different from the one shown here. As long as youre using the one we sent recently, itll still work with BT TV.

  • My BT TV isnt working. What can I do?Make sure:

all the cables that you plugged in during set-up are firmly in place

your HDMI or SCART cables are fully pushed in

your HDTV is set to the correct audio visual (AV) input depending on whether youve connected to your BT Vision+ box with an HDMI or SCART cable. Some TVs will do this automatically, or you can use the AV or button on your TV remote

your BT Vision+ box and TV are turned on

    your broadband is working

Try restarting your BT Home Hub by pressing Restart. Then wait a couple of minutes before restarting your BT Vision+ box by pressing the

button on the front of the box until it turns red. Then press the button to restart the box.

If youre using Powerline adapters, and youve still got a problem, you could try restarting these. To find out how to do this, go to bt.com/help/powerline

If youve got Extra TV channels, you should connect your Hub and BT Vision+ box using an Ethernet cable, not Powerline adapters. For more details, see below.

Do I have to use my Powerline adapters? No. If your BT Home Hub and BT Vision+ box are close to each other or if youve ordered Extra TV channels, you shouldnt use Powerline adapters. Simply use an Ethernet cable to connect your Hub to your box.

If your BT Home Hub and BT Vision+ box are in different rooms and you havent ordered Extra TV channels, you can use Powerline adapters. If you didnt order them with your kit, and its less than 30 days since you ordered your BT TV service, please call 0800 800 150 and well send you some.

Can I use an extension lead with a Powerline adapter?Yes, but we recommend that you plug your Powerline adapter directly into a wall socket as it might not work as well when plugged into some extension leads (such as very long or surge-protected leads). You can then plug any extension lead youre using into the Powerline adapter.

For more help with Powerline adapters, including resetting instructions or adding new Powerline adapters, go to bt.com/help/powerline

    Setting up

How do I connect BT TV using a SCART cable? If you dont have a cable already, you can buy one at most electronics stores or go to bt.com/shop

1 Using your SCART cable, connect your BT Vision+ boxs lower SCART socket (marked ) to a SCART socket on your TV. If your TV has more than one socket, use the one marked AV1.

If you havent got a widescreen or HDTV, youll need to change the setting on your TV and/or BT Vision+ box to 4:3 aspect ratio. Youll get a chance to do this during on-screen set-up later.

How do I use my BT remote control to operate my TV?For full instructions on how to do this, see page 20.

    1

Digital TV channels are delivered through your aerial. They include BT Sport (for customers who cant get it through their broadband connection) and Freeview channels.

What do I need to know about digital TV signals?1 Availability of channels depends on where you live. To check which

channels you should be able to receive in your area, go to digitaluk.co.uk

2 Most digital TV-related problems are down to the quality of your aerial or wiring:

BT TV wont work with a satellite dish so make sure that youve a good quality external or loft aerial capable of receiving a digital TV signal and that its aligned with your local transmitter

this should not be a communal or shared aerial a TV set-top aerial is unlikely to be good enough, even with a booster

3 Local geography, like tall trees, hills, or buildings in direct line with your local transmitter, can affect signal strength.

4 Weather low pressure or windy conditions can affect your TV signal even in strong signal areas, especially if the aerial is not securely mounted. Weather can disrupt picture quality, cause pixilation and/or picture freezes. It might even cause missing channels.

5 Transmitter changes can result in changes to channel line-ups and availability.

6 Wiring make sure youre using good quality cables. These are vital to ensure the signal from the aerial reaches your BT Vision+ box with minimum picture loss and interference.

If youve moved home, you might not receive the same channels you did before as signal strength and channel availability depends on where you live.

  • What can I do to get the best digital TV set-up?You can fix many common problems, such as missing channels, poor sound and picture quality, by working through the steps below.

1 Double check your aerial, HDMI or SCART cables are fully pushed in and that youre using good quality cables (especially cables to your aerial).

2 Check your BT Vision+ box and TV are turned on.

3 Make sure your broadbands working.

4 Scan for channels by pressing , then go to Help & Settings > Settings > TV Settings > Scan for Channels and press on Start Scan.

5 Check your aerial is properly in place and aligned with your local transmitter (probably pointing in the same direction as your neighbours).

6 If youve got a viewing card for BT Sport, make sure youve pushed it all the way into the slot with the arrow facing the box and the chip facing upwards.

My digital TV channels have distorted sound and pictures. What can I do?You can check your signal strength and quality for each channel.

1 Press then go to Help & Settings > Settings > TV Settings > DTT Signal Strength.

2 Using the and and Channel +/-, highlight the channel with poor picture or sound and note the signal reading for both strength and quality.

Each of these will show as red, amber or green depending on whether you need to take any action to improve your viewing experience.

A very strong signal can affect picture and sound quality. If your signal is too strong, this will show as red and you may need to buy an attenuator which you can find in most electrical stores.

How can I update my channel list?Your BT Vision+ box will automatically scan for channels from time to time. You can also run a complete channel scan yourself by pressing , then go to Help & Settings > Settings > TV Settings > Scan for Channels.

I dont have any sound. What can I do? Check the volume on your TV isnt muted.

Try another channel to see if sound is missing from all channels.

Check all your cables are firmly in place.

Try watching an On Demand trailer to see if the sound is working.

Restart your BT Vision+ box by holding down on the front of the box until it turns red. Then press to restart the box.

If this doesnt help and youre using an HDMI cable to connect your BT Vision+ box and TV, try using a SCART cable instead.

Where can I find some more help with digital TV?TSG is our preferred partner for helping fix problems with your aerial system. TSG offers a comprehensive signal assessment service which can help identify technical problems with your aerial system as well as offer professional advice on how best to fix any reception problems. These channels arent available. What can I do?If youve only just ordered these channels, youll need to wait up to 24 hours for them to start working.

These channels are delivered through your broadband connection, so youll need to make sure its working to watch them.

If it isnt, try restarting your equipment. Turn off the power to the BT Home Hub and BT Vision+ box. Wait ten seconds, then reconnect the power to the Hub. Allow up to two minutes for it to restart. Switch on the BT Vision+ box. The Starting Please Wait screen should appear. Shortly afterwards it should be ready to use.

If youre still having problems, make sure its at least 15 minutes after you finished setting up BT TV, then check that your Ethernet cable (yellow ends) is connected properly to both your Hub and BT Vision+ box, and check youre not using Powerline adapters.

If you still cant view these channels, go to the Help & Settings menu, choose Settings then CA Network Information and press Force Resynchronisation. Once youve done this, go to your TV Guide and try viewing one of the channels again.

Remember: You can also watch BT Sport online or on the BT Sport App. Go to btsport.com for more.

Can I use Powerline adapters with these channels? No. Channels that use your broadband connection dont support Powerline adapters, so youll need to connect your Hub and BT Vision+ box using an Ethernet cable.

My internet connection seems slower when watching these channels. What can I do?Your broadband is shared by everything connected to it (including computers, laptops, smartphones and some TV channels). This means that your internet connection will be a little slower when youre using these channels or other devices. And the more devices using it, the slower itll go.

To speed up your internet connection for your other devices, press the standby button on your set-top box when youre not using it or switch away from channels that use your broadband connection.

Im getting error codes on screen. What can I do?Select Help and follow any instructions. If these dont fix the problem, go to bt.com/help/tv or call the number given quoting the error code (e.g. VBA103).

    Viewing cards

Do I need a viewing card?Probably not. You should only need a viewing card if you want BT Sport, but cant get it delivered through your broadband connection. In that case, you should be able to get BT Sport 1 and BT Sport 2 delivered through your aerial in standard definition, but youll need a viewing card to watch those channels.

How do I get started with my viewing card?Make sure your broadbands connected, your BT Vision+ box is turned on and youre not recording anything. Then push your viewing card all the way into the slot with the arrow facing the box and the chip facing upwards.

While youre watching or recording channels that use your broadband connection, your broadband speed might be slower for other online activities. See My internet connection seems slower on page 27.

  • We want you to relax and enjoy BT TV. So weve made sure that you can control who watches what. You do this by setting up a PIN.

How can I set my PIN?Youll need to choose a PIN when you first set up your BT Vision+ box. And you might need to enter it from time to time, so make sure you keep a note of it.

You can change your PIN by pressing on your remote > Help & Settings then choosing Settings, then Parental Controls.

Locking On Demand film and TV ratings1 Say you want to allow only 12-rated programmes. Go to the Parental

Controls menu under Help & Settings, choose the Age Ratings option and press on your remote.

2 Next, choose 15-rated programmes. All the programmes 15-rated and above will be locked, leaving the 12-rated and below unlocked.

Watching age rated programmes during the dayYoull always be asked to enter your PIN if you try to watch a live programme with an age rating of 12 or above between 5.30am and 8pm.

Locking your accountThis stops unauthorised people from using the PIN-protected areas of BT TV. If your PIN is entered incorrectly three times, the account is temporarily locked. To get your PIN reset, call BT Technical Support on 0800 111 4567.

Locking On Demand rentalsTo set a PIN prompt for any payments, choose Rental Lock from the Parental Controls menu. Select Lock Rentals from the Rental Lock pop-up, then to save the selection and exit.

Locking and unlocking TV channels1 From the TV Settings screen under Help & Settings, choose Channel

Management. Youll see a menu showing all your BT TV channels (TV, Radio and Subscription channels).

2 In Manage Channels, you can PIN-protect channels you dont want your children to see by selecting a channel and pressing the yellow button. Youll see a padlock symbol next to the title, which means you can still see the channel in your TV Guide, but wont be able to watch it without entering your PIN. You can record locked channels but youll need to enter your PIN to watch them.

3 You can also hide channels from your TV Guide in Manage Channels. Choose a channel from the list, then press Select to change it between On/Off. If you want to add the channel back again, youll need to enter your PIN.

    Settings

How can I change screen dimensions and resolution?Press on your remote, then select Help & Settings > TV Settings > Display Settings and choose from the options available. Then press Save.

How do I turn on Subtitles or Audio Description? There are two ways to switch on subtitles or audio description for digital TV channels:

1 Temporary switch: Press the button on your remote control to toggle subtitles ON or OFF and the button to toggle audio description ON or OFF. Your choices will be lost when your BT Vision+ box is put into standby or switched off.

2 Permanent switch: Under Help & Settings > Settings > Accessibility Settings, you can choose to set subtitles and audio description as ON or OFF. Your choices will be saved even after your BT Vision+ box is put into standby or switched off.

The audio description volume is automatically set to the highest level, so it can easily be heard over the standard TV sound. But, you might find it more comfortable to turn the volume down for quieter programmes. To do this, select Audio Description Volume under Accessibility Settings.

Wed be delighted to tell you more. Just go to bt.com/inclusion

The small printSafety informationImportant information. Read these parts carefully.Your receiver is powered using mains AC via a detachable lead. This equipment has been manufactured to meet the appropriate safety standards, but the instructions below must be followed to operate it safely. These instructions must be kept for future reference.

1 Before connecting the receiver to the mains, check that the mains supply voltage corresponds to the voltage printed on it. If the mains voltage is different, consult your dealer.

2 The receiver has been designed for indoor use only.

3 The receiver doesnt contain any user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open the receiver. All maintenance work must be carried out by qualified personnel.

4 Periodically inspect the mains lead and receiver for damage. Dont use it if you find any damage. Refer to qualified personnel.

5 Unplug the receiver from the mains before lightning storms.

6 To prevent fire or shock hazard, dont expose this equipment to rain or moisture.

7 The receiver should be placed on a firm surface and the ventilation openings must not be covered with items such as newspapers, tablecloths, curtains, etc.

8 Dont install this equipment near any heat sources such as radiators, stoves or other apparatus that produce heat. Protect it from direct sunlight.

9 When installing the receiver, make sure theres a gap of approximately 2cm around it to enable air to circulate freely and help prevent overheating.

10 Leave access to the mains lead in case emergency shutdown is required.

11 Do not place any combustible objects on the receiver (candles, etc.).

12 No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should be placed on the receiver. It shouldnt be exposed to dripping or splashing. Should this happen, disconnect the receiver from the mains and consult qualified personnel.

13 Make sure that children do not place any foreign objects in any of the openings.

14 For cleaning, use a soft, damp (not wet) cloth. Never use any abrasive cloths and aerosol cleaners.

15 The batteries installed in the remote control should not be exposed to excessive heat, such as direct sunshine or fire.

Important electrical informationMains plug and its fuseThe supplied mains plug is a non-rewireable type. If you need to replace the fuse, you must use an ASTA- or BSI-approved BS 1362 fuse, rated at 3 Amps.

The plug has its fuse beneath a fuse cover on its face. If you need to replace it, use a screwdriver to lever off the fuse cover, replace the fuse with a new one and refit its cover. Never use a plug if its cover is missing.

If the supplied mains plug is not suitable for your mains socket-outlet, DO NOT plug it in. Remove its fuse and then cut the plug off the lead. Destroy the severed plug immediately to avoid the shock hazard that would exist if it was plugged into a mains socket. Fit an appropriate mains plug on the lead. If this plug contains a fuse, it should be as described above. If youre using a non-fused plug, an external fuse must not exceed 5 Amps.
