From the Administrative Team: The school year is quickly coming to an end but there is still a tremendous amount of work that needs to be done. From Track and Field, Spring Carnival, Evening Concert, Grade 8 Graduation and class excursions to organizational matters relating to class placements, timetabling, and farewells, MacLeod’s Landing P.S. continues to be a place of excitement and energy! Congratulations, in advance, to our Grade 3 and 6 students for the enormous amount of effort in working towards the completion of this year’s EQAO testing. Your efforts in supporting the administration of this testing were much appreciated. During the month of May we welcomed many new families to MacLeod’s Landing through our Welcome to Kindergarten program. This is an exciting time for parents, children and staff. We look forward to having these students begin school at MacLeod’s Landing in September.

Grade 8 Graduation
Our grade eight students will be celebrating the culmination of their elementary school experience on Wednesday, June 25
th. The
festivities will be conducted at Oakview Terrace. We are looking forward to wishing our departing students well.
Thursday, June 26th, 2014 Early Dismissal in Elementary Schools
All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to
improving student achievement and well-being. On Thursday, June
26th
, 2014 an early release day will take place to allow elementary
teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon
of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in
culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s
Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that
support student success.
As has been our practice over the past four years, students will attend
school during the morning of Thursday, June 26th, 2014 only. Students
will be dismissed early that day at 12:05 p.m. Arrangements will be
made to ensure that students who are normally bussed to and from
school will receive transportation at this time. Parents whose children
attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to
address this change in schedule.
Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart Event
On Wednesday, May 7, the students and staff at MacLeod’s Landing participated in our annual Jump
Rope and Hoops for Heart Event. We had perfect weather, and the children enjoyed being outside
and active for an extra hour of their day.
We raised $6,216.47 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. That’s double what we raised last year!
Thank you to all the families who helped support the event. Way to go!
Because of your efforts, the school also earned valuable resource for the school’s physical education department through
the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Heart Smart Points Program.

Dressing for Warmer Weather
Over the past few weeks we have been seeing some fluctuations in temperature and it is sometimes difficult to decide what your children should wear for the day. We suggest you dress your child in layers so that if the weather warms up during the day then he/she can stay cool. Your child can also bring a change of lighter clothes they can change into if they are feeling too warm throughout the day.
A Word From Our Students
Paint-a-Plow Contest
(Written by Grade 5 students in Mrs. Dillon’s and Mr. Burton’s classes))
The grade 5 students from Mrs. Dillon's and Mr. Burton’s classes recently won the York Region Paint-a-Plow contest! We spent all our science periods and some recesses to get it done. The job was to paint a snow plow blade following the theme of National Public Works Week “Building for Today. Planning for Tomorrow” We learned a lot about the Richmond Hill plans for the future and learned to collaborate as a big group. On Saturday, May 24th, there was an open house and people voted on the most well-drawn plow. We got the most votes, so as a reward for our efforts, representatives from
York Region will be visiting MacLeod's Landing PS at 12:05 pm on Thursday June 5th, to present the "Pylon Pete Trophy". The presentation will be held outside of the school in the front of the snow plow which the team is bringing to show the class.
York Region will be letting media know about the presentation. We expect that several photos will be taken and a group photo may appear in the local papers. As the winning school, the two classes will be receiving a pizza lunch! This is MacLeod's Landing's 3rd time winning the Paint-a-Plow contest. Mrs. Dillon and Mr. Burton are proud of their grade 5's and their outstanding work. Everyone is excited to receive their trophy and pizza party. They are happy to celebrate their accomplishment on Thursday!
Robert Hampson Tabs for Kids Fund
We are grateful for the
contribution of pop tabs to
support our Robert Hampson
Tabs for Kids Fund.
Proceeds are used to purchase wheelchairs
and related equipment for children with a
physical disability. We will continue to
collect the tabs throughout June.
Please keep collecting the tabs throughout
the summer and bring them to school in
September when we will be continuing our
charity fundraiser.
Roots of Empathy - Saying Goodbye
By. Mrs. Mako’s Grade One Class
Monday, June 2nd was our final Roots of Empathy meeting for this school
year. We are so thankful for this wonderful partnership. We have mixed
emotions as the program comes to an end. Our Grade One students want to
thank our dedicated Roots of Empathy facilitator, Mrs. Deb Sinyard who gave
us the gift of her time, energy and compassion during her weekly visits. We were able to learn so much
about our own abilities, passions, emotions, and character as we focused our attention on the needs
and growth of “our baby” Noah. The carefully chosen picture books helped spark important discussions
that were later captured in artwork on in writing tasks. Our students were able to take the time to
reflect on their own emotional, social, academic, and physical growth and they demonstrated significant
maturity in their ability to identify and respond to the needs of their peers.
Here are a few comments our grade one students made when asked to talk and write about how they
felt about the Roots of Empathy program.
“I was happy to see Mrs. Sinyard every week. I liked the books she read to us. She made me feel calm
and happy.”
“I like Baby Noah. He is funny and he loves to eat food with a spoon now. He started out little, and now
he is big. “
“I liked watching Baby Noah grow. I like it when he looks in my eyes and smiles
at me. I like it when he smiles and laughs. It is so hilarious.”
“Mrs. Sinyard taught us about “double dip emotions”. That means that you can
feel two things at the same time. Sometimes you can feel angry and sad at the
same time. You need to tell someone when you feel that way.”
Good bye Baby Noah. Thank you for teaching us this year!
