Center Anthony McMeans has anchored an offensive line that has been in con- stant flux because of injuries. Tackles Abram Hol- land and Dezmand Candelarie may return to action this week but several other linemen are out. Quar- terback Tyler Rogers also is questionable, having missed last week’s game with a torn muscle in his throwing elbow. NMSU may have to find creative ways to get the ball to its wide receivers and open holes for talented running back Larry Rose III. New Mexico State’s defense is not as wounded, nor is it facing a powerhouse Jaguars offense. The Aggies have stiffened against the rush recently, but the defense may need to force some turnovers if NMSU is to earn its first road victory of the season. If Louisiana Lafayette and South Alabama win today (both are favored), nine of the 12 teams on the Aggies’ schedule will be bowl eligible. UTEP, Texas State and Georgia Southern are the exceptions. “Not many teams would want to say they’ve played nine bowl-eligible football teams,” NMSU coach Doug Martin said. “We haven’t always risen to the challenge like we should have, but we haven’t had many breaks either.” >>> He may not get the start at quar- terback today, but Martin wants to see more of junior Conner Cramer on the field next season. It may not be at quarterback. “Conner is football smart, he’s just inex- perienced,” Martin said. “We put him on the punt team this year and it helped. He could play defensive back or tight end and do it well if he wants to do that. He needs to be on the field more.” >>> NMSU’s starting lineup will lose just three seniors this offseason — linebacker Rodney Butler, center Anthony McMeans and offensive tackle Abram Holland. >>> South Alabama can become bowl eligible with a victory today and in an odd way has Hurricane Matthew to thank for that opportunity. The Jaguars picked up a win over Presbyterian after their scheduled Nov. 19 game at LSU was canceled. LSU and Florida picked that date to make up an SEC game that was postponed by the hurricane. South Alabama received a $1.5 million payout from LSU and got the vic- tory over replacement Presbyterian. >>> Much like New Mexico State, South Alabama comes into the season finale as a banged-up team. Senior right guard Steven Foster suffered a broken ankle in last week’s loss at Idaho and became the sixth Jaguars starter lost for the season to injury. Most of the injuries have come on defense, but that unit remains the strength of South Alabama’s team. Senior tight end Gerald Everett (broken finger) is expected back in the starting lineup this week. >>> Corner Jalen Thompson was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after he intercepted a pair of passes and added a career-high 10 tackles — all unassisted — at Idaho last week, breaking up another pass as well. JAGUAR NOTES SCOUTING THE JAGUARS South Alabama doesn’t mind playing the defense-and-field-position game. Its offense is conservative and grinding with running back Xavier Johnson getting most of the carries. When quar- terback Dallas Davis does go to the air, tight ends Gerald Everett and Maaseiah Francis are his primary targets. Everett missed last week’s game at Idaho with a broken finger, but Francis recorded career highs with seven catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Both are expected to play today. If South Alabama’s offense is pedestrian, its defense is not. The Jaguars rank 10th nationally against the pass and excel in man-to-man cover- age. Safety Jeremy Reaves is a ballhawk, and line- backers Darrell Songy and Roman Buchanan are effective as run-stuffers or in coverage. South Alabama’s punt team also rates among the nation’s best behind senior Brandon McKee. KYLE MILLS/LEWISTON TRIBUNE VIA AP

New Mexico State’s battered offense will try to hold things together today against a stout South Alabama defense, but there are more than a few question marks. Center Anthony McMeans has anchored an offensive line that has been in con-stant flux because of injuries. Tackles Abram Hol-land and Dezmand Candelarie may return to action this week but several other linemen are out. Quar-terback Tyler Rogers also is questionable, having missed last week’s game with a torn muscle in his throwing elbow.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

AGGIE NOTES>>> Texas A&M and Kentucky of the

SEC may be the only household names, but New Mexico State’s 2016 schedule looks particularly challenging in retrospect. “We haven’t always risen to the challenge like we should have, but we haven’t had many breaks either.”

>>> He may not get the start at quar-terback today, but Martin wants to see more of junior Conner Cramer on the field next season. It may not be at quarterback. “Conner is football smart, he’s just inex-perienced,” Martin said. “We put him on the punt team this year and it helped. He could play defensive back or tight end and do it well if he wants to do that. He needs to be on the field more.”

>>> NMSU’s starting lineup will lose just three seniors this offseason — linebacker Rodney Butler, center Anthony McMeans and offensive tackle Abram Holland.

South Alabama received a $1.5 million payout from LSU and got the vic-tory over replacement Presbyterian.

JAGUAR NOTES

SCOUTING THE JAGUARS

South Alabama doesn’t mind playing the defense-and-field-position game. Its offense is conservative and grinding with running back Xavier Johnson getting most of the carries. When quar-terback Dallas Davis does go to the air, tight ends Gerald Everett and Maaseiah Francis are his primary targets. Everett missed last week’s game at Idaho with a broken finger, but Francis recorded career highs with seven catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Both are expected to play today.

If South Alabama’s offense is pedestrian, its defense is not. The Jaguars rank 10th nationally against the pass and excel in man-to-man cover-age. Safety Jeremy Reaves is a ballhawk, and line-backers Darrell Songy and Roman Buchanan are effective as run-stuffers or in coverage.

South Alabama’s punt team also rates among the nation’s best behind senior Brandon McKee.
