Facts can be things like populaon, naonal songs, tradions, cultural aracons, sports or symbols etc. Two pairs of students should then work together. Each student should draw one of their chosen flags (approx 8 cm x 8 cm) on a common blank map so that there are four flags represented on each blank map. Students should then create funcons for KUBO to move from one flag to another while they present facts about each country or state represented. Students can use KUBO Coding+ TagTiles ® to get KUBO to pause or wait while students present their facts. Have KUBO vary speed, go backwards, change direcon or make u-turns. BEFOREHAND Students should understand KUBO and the Coding and Coding+ TagTiles. S U M M A RYWorking in pairs, students research and create a poster that showcases different cultural attractions and facts about a selected country or state. Facts can be things like population, national songs, traditions, cultural attractions, sports or symbols etc.

Two pairs of students should then work together. Each student should draw one of their chosen flags (approx 8 cm x 8 cm) on a common blank map so that there are four flags represented on each blank map. Students should then create functions for KUBO to move from one flag to another while they present facts about each country or state represented. Students can use KUBO Coding+ TagTiles® to get KUBO to pause or wait while students present their facts. Have KUBO vary speed, go backwards, change direction or make u-turns.

C R O S S - C U R R I C U L A R L I N K S• Science & Social Studies: Students research what type of habitat is needed for the living national symbols

to survive. Have students choose a national symbol that represents a living creature. Have them research the habitat that creature needs to survive. Can they identify ways to improve the environment of that nation, such as providing better access to water, or improving roads?

• ELA: Students write a short essay on facts, features, history and/or geography about their chosen country. Have students decide how they should evaluate each others code and write an appraisal.

E X T E N S I O N A C T I V I T I E SStudents research their favorite national symbol, write a paragraph about it, and present it to the class.

Ask the students: “If you founded your own country, what would your national symbols be?”

S O L U T I O N E X A M P L EPosters might include national symbols such as the flag, animal, bird, tree, fruit, dances, songs or anthems.
