What is diabetes?Diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition where your blood glucose level is too high. There are two main types, Type 1 and Type 2. They are different conditions, but they are both serious.

What causes diabetes? What all types of diabetes have in common is that they cause people to have too much glucose (sugar) in their blood. But we all need some glucose to give us energy. We get glucose when our bodies break down the carbohydrates that we eat or drink. That glucose is released into our blood. We also need a hormone called insulin. It is made by our pancreas, and it allows the glucose in our blood to enter our cells and fuel our bodies.

If you do not have diabetes, your pancreas senses when glucose has entered your bloodstream and releases the right amount of insulin, so the glucose can get into your cells. But if you have diabetes, this system does not work.

Type 1 and Type 2 DiabetesWhen you have got Type 1 diabetes, you can not make any insulin at all. If you have got Type 2 diabetes, the insulin you make either can not work effectively, or you can not produce enough of it .In both types of diabetes, because glucose can not get into your cells, it begins to build up in your blood. And too much glucose in your blood causes a lot of different problems.

Diabetes : the basicsComplicationsIn the long term, high glucose levels in the blood can cause complications.

The most common symptoms of diabetes

• Going to the toilet a lot , especially at night

• Extreme thirsty

• Feeling more tired than usual

• Unexplained loss of weight

• Genital itching or thrush

• Cuts and wounds that take longer to heal

• Blurred vision

What happens if you ignore the signs of diabetes? If you have any of symptoms of diabetes, you should contact your doctor. It does not necessarily mean you have diabetes, but it is worth checking – early diagnosis, treatment and good control are vital for good health and reduce the chances of developing serious complications.

Leaving the symptoms untreated can:• Lead to serious health problems such as diabetic

ketoacidosis, which can result in a potentially fatal coma.

• Affect many major organs, including your heart , blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys.

Treatments for people with Type 1 diabetes

• If you need to take medication for your diabetes, you and your doctor will decide which is best for you.

• Lots of people with Type 2 diabetes don’t take any medication, and they instead treat their diabetes by eating well and exercising.

MALARIA PROPHYLAXIS

Botswana is a malaria risk area. As in many places in Africa, many people contract the illness each year. Malaria however is more prevalent in the rural areas where the population lives close together. Anti-malaria medication is a must - and you should consult your doctor regarding what precautionary medication to take. Ensure the following before you travel to Malaria prone areas:

• Take anti-malarial medication at least a week before leaving for your trip.

• Take precautions with long-sleeved shirts and jeans and wear these in the evenings. They will help reduce your chances of mosquito bites.

• Pack mosquito repellents, (cream or spray) for applying on your hands, face and neck. This will help keep the mosquitoes at bay.

ALLERGIES

HealthSPACENewsletter

What Are Allergies?Allergies are abnormal immune system reactions to things that are typically harmless to most people. When a person is allergic to something, the immune system mistakenly believes that this substance is harming the body. Substances that cause allergic reactions - such as some foods, dust , plant pollen, or medicines -are known as allergens.

How Do Allergies Happen? An allergy happens when the immune system overreacts to an allergen, treating it as an invader and trying to fight it off. This causes symptoms such as:

• Sneezing and Wheezing• Itchy nose and/or throat/ throat tightness• Stuffy nose• Coughing• Swelling• Itchy, watery, or swollen eyes• A drop in blood pressure, causing lightheadedness

or loss of consciousness

Future exposure to that same allergen will trigger this allergic response again.

What Causes Allergies? Allergies can be airborne, foodborne or carried through other means.

How Are Allergies Diagnosed? If your child has cold-like symptoms lasting longer than a week or two or develops a “cold” at the same time every year, talk to your doctor.

How Are Allergies Treated? There’s no cure for allergies, but symptoms can be managed. The best way to cope with them is to avoid the allergens. Parents must educate their kids early and often about their allergies and reactions to allergens.

Telling all caregivers (at school, family members, parents of your child’s friends, etc.) about your child’s allergy is also important .

Common Airborne Allergens Foodborne allergens Other Common Allergens. Dust mites

. Pollen is a major cause of allergies

. Mold are fungi that thrive both indoors and outside in warm, moist environments.

. Pet allergens caused by pet dander (tiny flakes of shed skin) and animal saliva.

. Cockroaches are also a major household allergen, especially in inner cities.

The eight foods that cause most of children’s allergies are; cow milk, eggs, fish shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, soy and wheat .

. Insect allergy: For most kids, being stung by an insect causes swelling, redness, and itching at the site of the bite.

. Medicines and Chemicals

HEALTH CARE PROVIDER ENGAGEMENT SEMINARS

KALAHARI DESERT WALK

Bomaid held a series of seminars with Health Care Providers as part of the annual engagement plan. Through the quarter, from July to September, the medical aid met with providers per their specialty; radiologists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, optometrists and dieticians. The objective of the engagements was to share Bomaid’s experiences and new developments. The Healthcare providers were also provided a platform to give Bomaid feedback and improvements based on their daily interaction with members. These interactions are valuable to Bomaid as they allow meaningful improvements for great service delivery

Bomaid also took part in the Jwaneng desert walk which was held on the 28th July 2018. The purpose of the walk was to inspire and motivate Bomaid staff to adopt healthier, happier living. The event involved walking 15 and 30 kilometers respectively. It provided an atmosphere to relax and interact outside the workplace.

BOMAID SPONSORS THE GOSEMAMA JSS PRIZE GIVING

Newsletter

For the second consecutive year, the Botswana Medical Aid Society (Bomaid), sponsored Gosemama Junior Secondary School prize giving ceremony. The ceremony was held on Friday the 5th October 2018 at Goo-Tau and it was officiated by Permanent Secretary to the President , Mr. Carter Morupisi.

The gesture to sponsor is in appreciation of the school effort to excel across all education spectrum. It is worth noting that , amongst others, Bomaid strives to support entities that live up to values similar to its own. In this case it is ‘excellence’, which is a virtue that the school has embraced. The sponsorship is also an effort by Bomaid to carry out its mandate of being a caring corporate citizen by supporting one of the nation’s core pillars, ‘an educated and informed nation’.
