Worship Commission Ministries

Altar Server | Purpose: Assist the priest during Mass. Responsibilities: Undertake initial training, maintain online scheduling and arrange for substitutes as needed. Assist with setup before Mass, assist during Mass and takedown after Mass. Open to students entering fifth to eighth grade. Time Commitment: About one assignment per month. Art & Environment Committee Member | Purpose: Assist with the preparation of the liturgical space for seasonal and special liturgies. Responsibilities: Assist with setup and takedown of environment throughout the year. Share responsibilities for upkeep of flowers, especially during Christmas and Easter seasons. Time Commitment: Open ended.

Purpose: To assist priest in administering Holy Communion. Responsibilities: Undertake initial training, maintain online scheduling and arrange for substitutes as needed. Commissioned by the bishop through the parish for a three year renewable term. Reliability is crucial. Time Commitment: About one assignment per month.

Funeral Sacristan | Purpose: To assist with the preparation of the liturgical articles prior to a Funeral Mass. Responsibilities: Undertake the initial training and set up the articles before the start of Mass. Time Commitment: One and one half to two hours per funeral. Lector | Purpose: To proclaim the Scripture during Mass. Responsibilities: Undertake the initial training, rehearse readings prior to Mass and be comfortable proclaiming the Scripture from the ambo. Maintain online scheduling and arrange for substitutes as needed. Reliability is crucial. Time Commitment: About one assignment per month. Martha Ministry | Purpose: To assist with the cleaning and upkeep of the liturgical articles for Mass. Responsibilities: Assist with small cleaning tasks in the church on a rotating basis with other team members or to be responsible for picking up linens on Mondays and dropping off on Fridays. Time Commitment: About two hours per month.

Ministers of Care | Purpose: To provide a connection to the faith community by bringing Eucharist to the homebound. Responsibilities: Undertake the initial training program, receive commissioning from the bishop through the parish and work in collaboration with the coordinator. Time Commitment: Once a week or whenever needed. Sacristan | Purpose: To assist with the preparation of the liturgical articles prior to Mass. Responsibilities: Undertake the initial training and set up the articles before the start of Mass. Time Commitment: Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to Mass. Usher | Purpose: To extend a gracious welcome to all worshippers before Mass and foster an atmosphere of comfort and safety during Mass. Responsibilities: Undertake the initial training and be attentive to when you are scheduled. Time Commitment: Minimal. Ushers are scheduled according to their Mass preference.

Purpose: To facilitate the growth and development of the liturgical and spiritual life of the faith community. Responsibilities: Attend meetings two to four times per year with Pastor and Music Director to plan and provide for the worship and prayer life of the parish. Time Commitment: One and one half hours per meeting.

» MUSIC MINISTRIES

Music Ministry members serve the liturgy through music, adding life and energy to the action taking place and aiding the effective participation of the parish as a whole. Music Ministers must possess a dedication to attend rehearsals and scheduled liturgies, and be able to work with others as part of a team. Are you a person of faith and prayer who desires to give glory to God through music? Do you wish to minister to St. James the Apostle Parish through music? A variety of roles within Music Ministry do require specific gifts and each role is covered below. Cantor | The role of the cantor is a leader of prayer who engages the assembly in sung prayer. The qualifications of the cantor include a disciplined and controlled vocal instrument that has been practiced and prepared for the occasion at hand. Funeral Choir | The role of the Funeral Choir is to lead music at a Funeral liturgy. Funerals usually take place in the mornings during the week or on Saturdays. Membership in the Liturgical Choir is not mandatory to participate in the Funeral Choir. Instrumentalist | The role of the instrumentalist is to enhance the sound of the music at liturgies. A moderate to high level of proficiency is required in order to serve in this ministry, including the ability to read and or chord symbols.

Liturgical Choir | The role of the Liturgical Choir is to support the worshipping assembly by leading them in hymns and acclamations at Masses from September to May. It is also the main choir for Christmas and Holy Week Celebrations. Membership is open to all adults and high school teens.

Music Ministries

» CHRISTIAN SERVICE MINISTRIES

Christmas Basket Program | Purpose: To provide Christmas gifts and food to needy families at Christmastime. Responsibilities: Help with the coordinator of the program and distribution of the gifts to the families. Time Commitment: Planning begins at a meeting in October and program runs at beginning of December. Council of Catholic Women (CCW) | Purpose: To incorporate the commandment to love one another through works of charity and sharing of God’s gifts. Responsibilities: The council meets during the year to plan activities and events, including the Advent Tea, Christmas outreach to the children of St. Teresa Parish in Kankakee, Mother’s Day flowers for the parish homebound. Time Commitment: Varies per event. Glen Ellyn Food Pantry | Purpose: To supply food on an emergency basis to those in need in the Glen Ellyn area. Responsibilities: May serve on board, work at pantry site, transport food collected during parish months of support. Time Commitment: Varies depending upon level of involvement.

Knights of Columbus | Purpose: To provide men opportunities to better know and practice their Catholic faith. Responsibilities: Help plan and coordinate various yearly events, including Blood Drive, Essay Contests, Tootsie Roll Drive. Time Commitment: Dependent upon individual’s level of commitment. PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) | Purpose: To end and prevent homelessness in DuPage County. St. James supports by assisting with Emergency Overnight Shelter Program at a location in Glen Ellyn. Responsibilities: Depends on the time of the shift for which one volunteers, but may include setup or cleanup of site, meal preparation or laundry services, supervision of the site overnight. Time Commitment: About four hours once a month from October through April. Quilting Ministry | Purpose: To provide the opportunity for parishioners to gather together in fellowship, creativity and service through the art of quilting. Responsibilities: Create lap quilts for elderly and homebound parishioners, as well as baby quilts for Pro-Life organizations who work with mothers who have chosen life. Time Commitment: Meetings are once a month, with a break during the summer.

Christian Service Ministries

Reverence for Life | Purpose: To promote reverence of life and to inform parishioners of activities and legislation that furthers this cause. We promote the 40 Days for Life campaign each year, as well as extend an ongoing invitation to parishioners to join us in prayer at local abortion clinics. Scrapbooking Ministry | Purpose: To promote an awareness and reverence for the sacredness present in the ordinary moments of every day life, using scrapbooking as the medium to preserve these moments. Responsibilities: Join us to build your story and share the gift of the sacred moments from the ordinary moments of your life with others. Time Commitment: We typically meet once per month on a Friday evening for a five hour session. A couple of times a year we host a two day event. St. Vincent de Paul Ministry | Purpose: To provide support to those in the Glen Ellyn area who are in immediate need due to unexpected circumstances. Responsibilities: Respond to requests from potential clients with a visit to their home to assess the needs and to make a reference to all available resources. Client visits are done in pairs. Time Commitment: Two to three hours per month. Young at Heart Seniors | Purpose: To provide spiritual, social, cultural and informational activities for seniors. Responsibilities: Help setup and serve lunch for our seniors. Time Commitment: Two to three hours per month.

Walk-In Ministry of Glen Ellyn | Purpose: To provide emergency assistance to individuals and families in need in Glen Ellyn. Responsibilities: Meet with and access the needs of applicants and identify short-term solutions (gas vouchers, food coupons, referrals). Time Commitment: Varies. Volunteers sign up to cover particular days during the hours of operation (M-F; 10 A.M. to Noon) at the First United Methodist Church in Glen Ellyn.

Christian Education Ministries

St. James the Apostle Catholic School | At St. James the Apostle School we are committed to fostering lifelong learners to become the next generation of leaders by providing a challenging academic program rooted in Catholic beliefs. We offer classes for students from preschool - 8th Grade. By combining our Catholic beliefs, strong academics, Christian service, liturgy and prayer, we help our students to become people of faith and lifelong learners who serve the broader community. Volunteer opportunities include serving on the School Board, Parent Teacher Organization and the Athletic Commission. | The St. James the Apostle Religious Education Program shares and teaches our Catholic faith with the children of our parish. Catechists and aides are needed to present weekly lessons from the syllabus, which are provided, as well as to plan lessons and activities. Classes are held once a week from September through April. | Purpose: To provide an opportunity for adults to deepen their faith, through Bible Studies, speakers and other events. Events are advertised on our website, through Flocknote, on social media and in the parish bulletin. Please contact the Ministry Center: 630.469.7540.

| Purpose: To provide a safe, supportive and fun environment where high school teens can bond and learn to explore their faith and life. Responsibilities: Help facilitate events. | Purpose: Husband and wife team of volunteers minister one-on-one with an engaged couple. Responsibilities: Review the results of the FOCCUS survey with them. Training is provided. | Purpose: To provide a safe, supportive and fun environment where middle school teens can learn to explore their faith while completing acts of service. | Purpose: To serve as a mentor for adults and teens interested in becoming Catholic. Responsibilities: Attend weekly catechetical sessions from September to May (as available) and to assist in discussions of Sunday scripture readings from Advent to Easter. Parish Life Ministries

Hospitality Sundays | Purpose: To build community through food and fellowship following Sunday Masses once a month. Responsibilities: Help setup before, serve during and clean up after Sunday Masses once a month. Time Commitment: Minimal.

Tuesdays with Mass, Coffee & Fellowship | Purpose: To build community through food and fellowship following one weekday Mass, once a month. Responsibilities: Help setup before, serve during and clean up after a Tuesday morning Mass once a month. Time Commitment: Minimal.
