ICE
works best on the spine or with intense pain.
Ice the affected area for 20 minutes, then remove the ice for 20 minutes. Repeat this cycle as often as necessary to decrease pain and swelling. It is best to place a layer of cloth (towel or clothing) between your skin and the ice pack.
There are four stages of sensation to icing an area: First, it will feel cold. Second, the area will almost feel hot. Third, there will sometimes be a ‘pins and needles’ sensation, much like the area is ‘waking up’ after falling asleep due to lack of blood supply. The fourth and final stage is the numbness. When the area goes numb, it’s time to stop icing.
A notable exception to this icing method, is the actual shoulder blade. Ice on the thin muscles of the shoulder blade can cause the bone to be chilled and ache. Heat works better in this area.

Heat works best over muscle spasm.
Moist heat applications may last up to 30-45 minutes. Remove the heat and wait 20 minutes (or when the area returns to normal body temperature) to reapply for another 30 minutes. There should be a layer of cloth between the skin and the heat source to protect the skin.
Heat can also be used to ‘drive in’ magnesium for faster absorption and relief of muscle spasms.
Never apply heat to the spine.
Magnesium
is Mother Nature’s muscle relaxant. A little known fact is that magnesium is better absorbed through the skin than through digestion. Liquid and spray magnesium products are available at most local health food stores or online. Apply it to painful or spastic muscles and it is absorbed directly into the muscles that need it the most. Often relief is felt in minutes. Magnesium can be applied more than once a day if necessary. As mentioned above, moist heat can speed up the absorption.
