of asphalt shoulders, which Intercounty Paving built and paved. Construction of two new taxiways were part of the plan as well.

“It was definitely a fast-track project because you can imagine the effect of having one of the nation’s busiest airport hubs shut down,” said General Manager Frank Lizza of the $20 million worth of work Intercounty Paving completed. “Once we had the milling done, we fine-graded the subgrade and excavated and graded for the shoulders.”

The concrete runway was built by the general contractor, with Intercounty Paving putting down the asphalt on the shoulders. In total, the company placed more than 380,000 tons of asphalt during the four-month project, including 8,850 tons on one Saturday alone.

“That was a milestone for total tons delivered in a day,” said Lizza, who pointed out that during the week, Intercounty Paving ran two crews Mondays through Fridays and four on Saturdays. “Our goal was to get 2,000 tons per crew per day and, for the most part, we met that. In addition to the paving, we hauled in about 100,000 tons of drainage stone and about an equal amount of sand for the general contractor as they put in the concrete.”

Finishing projects like the Bay Runway ahead of schedule is a challenge, but Intercounty Paving Associates has been meeting and beating deadlines since the company was founded in 1997 by brothers John and Carl Lizza III in Hackettstown, N.J. Most of the early work focused on small commercial and township paves in northwest New Jersey.

M Meeting a project’s time schedule is always a contractor’s goal, but when it involves reconstruction of a runway that serves half of the departures from New York’s JFK Airport, it’s even more critical. Despite only 120 days to work with, Intercounty Paving Associates made sure the timetable was met.

Working as a subcontractor, Hicksville, N.Y.-based Intercounty Paving Associates started its portion of the work on March 1, 2010, by milling the existing pavement. The entire Bay Runway project involved complete reconstruction that included widening from 150 to 200 feet of the nearly three-mile long runway. Part of the widening was the addition

Pennsylvania. The brothers’ uncle Carl is also a partner in the business, as is John Perucci who worked in other Lizza family businesses before joining Intercounty Paving.

Intercounty Paving Associates continues to grow and expand well beyond small paving jobs as illustrated by the JFK Bay Runway project. It’s now a full-service construction company that handles concrete, drainage, excavation, utility and site-work projects, in addition to asphalt paving.

The company offers diverse services with the help of affiliated businesses that the Lizza family owns and operates, including Flushing Asphalt, which supplied much of the asphalt to the JFK project. There’s also Twin County Recycling, which supplies asphalt and does crushing in New York, as well as three trucking companies — Intercounty Asphalt Supply of Long Island, Willow Grove Trucking and 4L Trucking.

“Asphalt paving remains our cornerstone,” said Lizza of the company’s asphalt paving division, one of Intercounty Paving’s four divisions. “We also have a milling division, which was one of our earliest offerings, and we have a road reclamation division that does full-depth reclamation. In addition, there’s a construction division. The other services allow us to work as a general contractor on many of the projects, self-performing nearly everything. Intercounty is one of only a handful of businesses that offer such a diversity of services.”

Intercounty Paving Associates has a staff of about 300 employees — many of whom have worked with the Lizza family 25 years or more, including Dispatcher Bernie Lampert. With their help, the company has completed several high-profile projects in the tri-state region, including numerous jobs at JFK, as well as LaGuardia International Airport and Newark Airport. Other paving projects include Department of Transportation and municipal street and highway work in all three states.

home of the New York Mets. The company installed all sewer and water connections outside the baseball stadium, dug the electrical trenches and did concrete and asphalt paving.

“Citi Field really points out our full-service capabilities, and shows that we’re more than just a heavy highway or airport runway contractor,” Lizza points out. “It was a great project for us, and a showcase one. It’s nice to drive by or go to the ballpark and be able to say ‘we did that.’ ”

To accomplish that work, Intercounty Paving and its affiliates rely heavily on a diversified fleet of machinery, including Komatsu wheel loaders and a GD655 motor grader from Edward Ehrbar Inc. Sales Rep Dan Stanton was instrumental in helping them get the right equipment for their varied jobs.

“Our philosophy has always been to get every last ounce of production out of equipment, so that means we run it well into the thousands of hours,” emphasized

Intercounty Paving recently began replacing its older Komatsu wheel loaders with new Dash-6 models, including this WA500. “Komatsu has been in our fleets for almost 20 years,” said General Manager Frank Lizza. “We really appreciate the reliability we get from Komatsu products.”

Lizza. “Obviously, we keep an aggressive maintenance schedule to assist in that. Within the past few years, we’ve begun using some of the newer equipment lines, such as Etnyre and Rogers, that Ehrbar carries, but Komatsu has been in our fleets for almost 20 years. In fact, throughout the past couple of years, we’ve been replacing our Komatsu wheel loaders with the latest Dash-6 series. Those replaced some of the original loaders we acquired in the late 1990s, and they were still productive. We really appreciate the reliability we get from Komatsu products.

“An area that also stands out with Komatsu is the technology it uses, not only from a production standpoint, but efficiency as well,”

added Lizza. “KOMTRAX allows us to remotely monitor the new loaders for items such as fuel usage, oil pressure and temperature. It alerts us if there’s an issue. It’s a valuable tool.”

The Lizzas appreciate similar attributes in their Wirtgen milling and paving equipment that includes a Vögele paver and Hamm rollers. “About the same time we started using Komatsu, we were one of the first companies in the nation to purchase a 10-foot Wirtgen recycler,” recalled Lizza. “We’re still using it. It’s helped in our reclamation work, which in the last 10 to 12 years, involved about 50 percent of all that type of work done on Long Island. In 2009, we added a WR 2500, which is an eight-footer. We keep adding Wirtgen products, because like the Komatsus, they last and they’re technologically advanced.”

Another reason the Lizzas continue to buy Komatsu and Wirtgen products, along with others from Edward Ehrbar Inc., is the service they get from Ehrbar. “The relationship between the Aherns and us goes back about 50 years,” noted Lizza. “Ehrbar services all our new Komatsu equipment, and responds day or night if we have an issue. Service is a major factor in our equipment-buying decisions, and obviously Ehrbar does an excellent job based on our history.”

Intercounty Paving has a decade of history under its belt, and the Lizzas believe the experience set them up well to ensure the Bay Runway and Citi Field projects were done on time and on budget. They also believe they’re in a great position to take advantage of a positive turn in the economy.

“Those two projects kept us busy during what’s been a rather big economic hit in the construction industry. Because we’ve been willing to grow, and can offer a large package of services, we’re able to do what others maybe couldn’t, and that’s a big advantage,” expressed Lizza. “We’ve had steady growth, which coupled with a lot of experience and a customer service focus, has put Intercounty Paving at the forefront of the industry. We expect that to continue to be the case.” n

company’s office, while Augusto oversees field operations. “Handling all aspects of a paving job means we have full control over the schedule. That’s made us more efficient and ensures faster delivery of a project. At the same time, it’s helped us obtain work we weren’t doing before because we can break our services out and do just a milling or reclaiming job.”

A & J Construction’s projects fall into every sector of the paving market, including residential, commercial, municipal and the state department of transportation. The company’s focus is mainly on asphalt paving projects throughout Connecticut and into western New York state, but it also offers oil and decorative stone and masonry work.

“We’re equipped for every type of paving project,” confirmed Augusto. “We can build a driveway, parking lot or road from scratch by doing the grading and subgrade prep, as well as paving. With our expanded services, A & J can now mill, reclaim and repave an existing area. Our customers appreciate that they have one company that handles the project from start to finish.”

A & J CONSTRUCTION Connecticut paving company rounds out offerings with the addition of milling

L Last year, A & J Construction added milling to the list of services the Danbury, Conn., asphalt paving company handles. Owners Arlindo “Al” Augusto and Ray Boa believed it was a major step in making the business even more competitive and well-rounded.

“Milling is an excellent complement to what we already offer,” said Augusto, who started A & J Construction in 1979. “Asphalt paving has always been our main offering, and in the past, we’ve subbed out parts of the process. We also recently added reclamation. Now we’re able to handle every aspect of a paving job in-house.”

“Adding milling and reclaiming helped us grow during the past couple of years when other businesses were taking a hit because of the economy,” added Boa, who oversees the

Augusto and Boa, who are brothers-in-law, increased their employee numbers with the additions of reclaiming and milling. The company now has more than 40 on staff, nearly doubling its numbers in the past few years. Several other family members are involved in the business, including Augusto’s sons Louis and Danny. Louis is Vice President of Operations, and Danny runs a field crew. Last year, Boa’s son Joe joined A & J Construction full time after graduating from the University of Connecticut.

A & J Construction runs two paving, two grading, one milling, one reclaiming and one masonry crew. Other key members of the staff include Estimators Monte Russo and Miguel Baptista, but Augusto and Boa credit everyone with making A & J Construction a success.

“We stress honest hard work that leads to a quality project, and our employees believe in that as well,” said Augusto, noting that several employees have been with A & J for nearly its entire history. “Honestly, employees are what make or break a company, so our success is directly tied to them. It also helps that they’re responsible and experienced, and those are two attributes that are great strengths with our employees. They are tremendous assets.”

A & J Construction added to its equipment fleet as well. Augusto and Boa teamed with Edward Ehrbar, Inc. to acquire new Wirtgen W 210 and W 50DC milling machines and a Hamm roller.

“We’re especially impressed with the W 210 because it allows us full-depth removal, so it’s powerful,” added Augusto. “But it’s also very efficient. One feature that really sold us was the dual-engine technology. It runs on one engine all the time, but when we have deeper cuts, the other engine kicks in and gives us the extra capacity needed to get the job done. It might appear that two engines would use a lot of fuel, but just the opposite is true.”

They’re quiet too, which is a major advantage for us because we do quite a bit of night work and work in residential areas. We’re very impressed with the Wirtgen products.”

For its Wirtgen and Hamm purchases, A & J Construction worked with Edward Ehrbar Sales Rep Jeff Weston. “Solid

relationships in our business are extremely valuable, and during the past couple of years we’ve developed a very good one at Ehrbar with Jeff, Matt and Pat Ahern and Service Manager Kevin Pectal,” said Augusto. “They’re responsive when we call. Right after we got the W 210, we had an issue during a project we were doing on a Sunday night. I called Ehrbar’s 24-hour emergency number and within minutes Matt called me back and said he’d have someone contact us. A few minutes later, Kevin called, gave me his home number and told me to call if we needed him to come to the jobsite. At that time, I didn’t think it was necessary as he talked to me about the issue and what it might be. Later, it popped up again, I called Kevin and within 45 minutes he was on site working on the machine. That’s a testament to Ehrbar’s service.”

Augusto and Boa claim that high level of service means they’ll look to Ehrbar when it comes to adding more equipment. For now, however, they’re content with A & J Construction’s size and service capabilities.

“Our values include always keeping our word to customers, and in the 30-plus years we’ve been in business that’s helped us grow and expand,” Augusto pointed out. “When dad started the business, it was basically just a few guys doing driveway paving. Through word-of-mouth referrals, the company gained more and more work. Now we’re doing multimillion-dollar projects as a general contractor. But we maintain the roots that brought us to this point. For now, I believe we’re just the right size, but there’s potential for growth too.”

With a second, and now third, generation of family members working at A & J Construction, Augusto and Boa say they feel good about the company’s future.

“It’s very gratifying to see our kids come into the business and work to build on what we’ve established,” said Boa. “Nothing would give us more satisfaction than for them to grow the business into the future. We’re well-structured for that to happen.” n

Sidney was reluctant. Having grown up during the Depression, he was wary of getting bigger and laying out a substantial investment. Bill convinced him it was the right move, and the two picked out a spot in Holbrook, N.Y., which has been home to Crestwood Metal ever since.

From that time in 1969, when Crestwood Metal’s footprint was a 5,000-square-foot building and an acre of land, the company has specialized in aluminum recycling. Through expansion and investment in modern equipment, Crestwood now operates on five acres and is one of Long Island’s largest scrap-metal facilities, recycling upward of 40 million pounds of scrap metal per year. Prior to the late 2008 economic crisis, the operation ran three aluminum sweat furnaces 24 hours per day almost six days per week.

“Aluminum remains our top product, and we are able to process it in numerous ways,” Bill Goldkind pointed out. “Using state-of-the-art equipment, we can shred it, bail it, melt it or puck it. In addition, our facility has one of the only eddy current lines locally, which allows us to extract aluminum, as well as other commodities, from mixed material. It’s our speciality, and we can mix different recipes to suit our customers’ specifications. We’re producing over a dozen end-products.

“But we’re also a retail and wholesale handler for other nonferrous metals, such as copper, brass, titanium, nickel alloys and steel,” added Goldkind. “More recently, we’ve taken on electronics recycling, which is increasingly becoming more significant in the marketplace because there are many components that have to be disposed of properly and shouldn’t end up in a landfill. We’re constantly looking for different niches to make Crestwood stand out in the crowd.”

CRESTWOOD METAL CORP. Holbrook metal recycler continues to turn scrap into success, despite early reservations

B Bill Goldkind admits he wasn’t overly thrilled about working in metal recycling when he started in the industry a little more than 50 years ago. In fact, he only got into it as a favor to his father, Sidney, who founded Crestwood Metal in 1954 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“My uncle talked my father into going into metal recycling as an alternative to the raincoat business dad was in at the time,” recalled Goldkind, who’s President and CEO. “Things weren’t good in the raincoat business, so he bought a truck, and with that and $1,000 to buy metal, he was in business. I joined him in 1959, and the rest is history, as they say.”

When Goldkind joined his father, who is now deceased, he brought with him little to no metal-industry experience. “I was making surfboards, and it was fairly lucrative at the time. I wasn’t enamored with metal recycling, but dad needed the help. Eventually things took off and we moved the business to Hewlett, working out of a set of chicken coops. After about 10 years of that, I told dad that we had to expand again for me to stay in the business.”

Crestwood Metal has found one niche as a wholesale recycler that offers other scrap recyclers another outlet to sell their products, something not many recyclers do, according to Goldkind. The company also supplies pick-up drums and containers to industrial clients.

A few years ago, Crestwood Metal set itself further apart by offering demolition services to the U.S. military. Now in its second five-year governmental contract, the company dismantles and recycles decommissioned aircraft and weaponry, such as tanks, throughout the United States.

“We’ve gone all over the country — Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas — anywhere the military has work for us,” explained Goldkind, whose demolition arm is based in Indiana. “We send some of the metal to local scrap facilities, but we ship most of the aluminum back to our Holbrook facility because we can better process it there. For instance, we took apart some Howitzer shells in Pennsylvania and sold the steel there but brought back the aluminum from the tips.”

Between the Holbrook and Indiana facilities, Crestwood Metal now employs about 70 people, many of whom are what Goldkind terms “lifers.” Longtime employees include General Manager Robert Cabral and Yard Managers Jerry Esposito and Senad Sabovic. The company’s first employee, Frank Thomas, retired in 2009 after being with Crestwood almost its entire history.

“This is one of those businesses where it gets in their blood, as it did for me, and they stay on longer than they ever expected to,” observed Goldkind. “That’s good for us, because they understand the business. It also says a lot about their character, because this business takes a lot of hard work. There are many dedicated people here who are responsible for Crestwood Metal’s continued success.”

hand. While employees still do some hand sorting, machinery now handles the vast majority. The company’s Holbrook facility uses a Komatsu PC160LC-7 excavator with a LaBounty sheer and a 45-foot-reach Fuchs MHL 340 material handler purchased from Edward Ehrbar Inc.

“The new Fuchs material handler added a higher level of efficiency for us,” affirmed Goldkind, who noted that it was purchased about a year ago and replaced an older MHL 331 that’s now one of two MHL 331s being used in the company’s military dismantling

operation. “It has more power and increases our height, so visibility is better, which allows us to unload trailers faster and easier.

It’s also very mobile, so we can get around the yard quickly, even when space is limited.

“We’ve found the Komatsu excavator and LaBounty shear to be a great combination as well,” he added. “It allows us to get material down to size and process it, so it reduces our time from when it’s delivered until it’s melted and ready to go out of the yard.”

Downtime is minimal with the Fuchs and Komatsu equipment, said Goldkind, thanks in part to service Crestwood Metal receives from Edward Ehrbar’s Service Department. “When we were looking for new equipment, our Sales Representative James Hogan explained the benefits of the Fuchs and Komatsu equipment well, and was very helpful throughout the entire buying process. Because Ehrbar was so good to work with from that aspect, we’ve turned to them for service as well, and they’ve done an outstanding job. They have the knowledge and expertise to get in and get the job done without our machines sitting idle for an extended period of time. That’s vital in this business.”

Goldkind also believes a good support team, including his employees and his wife of 43 years, Joy, is vital too. “Honestly, there were times when my wife, like my father, thought I was crazy for buying new equipment, but ultimately they stood behind my decision to expand. Fortunately, nearly every step we’ve taken has paid off. Because of that, Crestwood was able to gain a firm foothold in the industry even before metal recycling became really popular.

“I’ve always believed you have to make a significant investment to get a good return, and I have, both in equipment and manpower,” he added. “I’ve always been pro-growth, but our success has exceeded even my expectations.”

Despite his trepidation starting out in the scrap metal business, Goldkind knows he made the right decision to remain in the business. “I honestly can’t see myself doing anything else, and I have no intention of retiring soon. I love what I do because there’s always something to learn, and some new technology that makes the business even more fun. It seems like every day I learn something new, and that’s exciting.” n

even plumbers and electricians to an extent. We try to have what they need. We carry top products and we’re easily accessible from throughout Long Island. We’ve even supplied jobs in New York City and New Jersey.”

Part of All County’s equipment-rental success is attributable to the contacts that Mr. Affenita built up during a career that began with a family precast-concrete business. In 1981, Mr. Affenita started his own precast-concrete company called Afco Precast. In 1996, looking to diversify, he bought a cement-block manufacturing plant. He continued running both until selling Afco in 2001 in order to focus all of his attention on making All County Block & Supply the leading contractor supply firm in the area.

“Since getting into the building supply business, I’ve continually looked to diversify and add services that fit with our core business,” noted Mr. Affenita. “The goal of the diversification has always been to allow us to better serve our regular contractor clientele. That’s what got us into the equipment-rental business. It was a way to better meet the needs of those customers. We try to provide the small to medium-size contractor with whatever he needs so he doesn’t have to go anyplace else.”

All County Equipment Rental products include mixers, saws, grinders, welders and jack hammers up to good-size mobile equipment such as skid steer loaders, wheel loaders, dozers and hydraulic excavators. The customer base consists almost exclusively of contractors.

Much of the mobile equipment in the All County rental fleet consists of Komatsu machines from Edward Ehrbar, Inc. They tend to be utility-size or small construction machines, such as Komatsu D21 and D39 dozers, and Komatsu hydraulic excavators ranging from a compact eight-horsepower PC09 through an 89-horsepower PC120.

“We use Komatsu equipment ourselves around the yard loading trucks, crushing and stockpiling material, so we’re very familiar with the machines,” said Mr. Affenita. “We know from firsthand experience that it’s high-quality equipment — user-friendly, productive and reliable. We also make sure our rental fleet consists of relatively new units and we maintain them well. Because of all that, we’re very comfortable recommending and renting out Komatsu units to our customers. We know they’re going to be pleased with the rentals.”

All County’s equipment-rental service includes delivery and pickup of rental units at customers’ jobsites throughout the greater New York metropolitan area.

“We’ll deliver machines from Montauk to New York City and all points in between,” noted Mr. Affenita. “We offer daily, weekly and monthly rates. If you’re a small to medium-size contractor who’s having a hard time finding a machine to rent, we hope you’ll give us a call and give us a chance to show what we have to offer.”

Beyond the quality of the Komatsu equipment, All County knew it would need the support of an equipment distributor to get started in equipment rentals. Edward Ehrbar, Inc. was a natural fit for them. Continued . . .

“To get into a business like equipment rental that we’ve never done before, we had to depend on a dealer to help guide us through some things,” said Mr. Affenita. “Ehrbar’s Long Island branch in Holbrook is almost a next-door neighbor of ours. “From the very beginning, Ehrbar helped get us the right type and size of equipment we would need and they gave us some favorable lease terms to get started,” he added. “They’ve been there for us since day one and because of their help and support, we’ve been able to meet the equipment and service needs of our customers.”

involved in the business. “I started Afco with just a couple of helpers, but my brother joined me within the first year. My father and sister (Laura Pray) came on board within three or four years and Laura’s still here.”

Deanna D’Amico handles office administrative and payroll duties for All County. Head mechanic Carl Grantham takes care of the equipment.

“We’re very proud of our work force,” said Mr. Affenita. “I believe everybody who works here gets it — they understand the importance of a happy customer. We try to give our contractor customer, whether he’s buying material or renting equipment, the best possible store experience. By doing that routinely and consistently, we give them a reason to come back to us the next time.”

In addition to being a successful business, All County is a good corporate citizen as well. “We’re lifelong Long Islanders,” said Mr. Affenita. “We think this is a great place. We believe in giving back to the community and supporting worthwhile organizations to try to make it even better. That’s why we give to a number of charities and actively support the Eagle Scouts, Little League, Holbrook Chamber of Commerce and the local Fire Department.”

While the last couple of years have been challenging, Mr. Affenita says he believes the worst is over.

“There are signs that the economy has begun to turn around and is now on the upswing. At All County, we’re optimistic about the future. We’re very glad we made the move to begin offering equipment rentals. That side of our business has grown steadily and has become an important part of who we are and what we do. We believe it will continue to grow for us as more contractors learn that we have rental machines; that our prices are competitive; and that we provide excellent service, including delivery and pickup.”

Regarding the possibility of continued expansion at All County Block & Supply, Mr. Affenita says, “There’s no conscious effort on our part to try to get bigger, it’s always just happened naturally because we’re excited about what we do and are always looking for ways to do it better. As a result, we’ll probably continue to diversify in the years to come. On the equipment rental side, that includes a plan to add some larger roller/compactors and perhaps asphalt equipment. Beyond that, we’ll just continue to listen to our customers, try to anticipate their needs and then meet those needs. As long as we do that, we think we have a good chance to continue to grow.” n

W When CONEXPO-CON/AGG was held in 2008, it counted itself the largest construction industry event of its kind with attendance topping 144,000. When it returns to Las Vegas this year, that claim may not hold, as CONEXPO-CON/AGG is expected to be even larger.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center March 22 to 26 with more than 2 million square feet of exhibit space that features a wide variety of equipment, educational opportunities and technology. The event is held in conjunction with the International Fluid Power Expo (IFPE), an exposition and technical conference dedicated to the integration of fluid power with other technologies for power transmission and motion control applications. It’s on pace to top more than 126,000 square feet.

“These numbers are especially gratifying given the continued slowdown in the manufacturing

sector,” said Megan Tanel, Vice President Exhibitions and Events for the Associated Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). “We value the industry support we’re receiving as we strive to offer the industry a gathering place to sell their equipment, products and services as well as network with their peers.”

A theater presentation in its exhibit space will highlight product features and the service and programs Komatsu and its distributors offer in support. One program Komatsu will showcase is its KOMTRAX remote machine-monitoring system that’s standard on most new machines and free for the first five years.

Komatsu will highlight its Hybrid PC200LC-8 excavator, as well as new equipment with Interim Tier 4 engine technology that went into effect at the beginning of this year.

Other product concentration areas for lifting equipment, asphalt paving and production, concrete paving and production, aggregate processing and heavy-duty trucks and mixers will be set up at the expo. Sub-specialties such as engines, hydraulics, lubricants, tires and components have their designated areas as well.

Information stands will be set up throughout the show, and interactive product locators, searchable by company and product, will be on the show floor. These will also have information regarding seminars and meetings. Other show services include a free shuttle system to transport visitors from hotels to and from the convention center and an intra-show shuttle system.

A positive experience In addition to AEM, there are several organizations that sponsor CONEXPO-CON/AGG, including many with which attendees are affiliated. Among them are the American Concrete Pavement Association, American Road & Transportation Builders Association, The Associated General Contractors of America and Land Improvement Contractors of America.

Statistics show that the vast majority of those who attend CONEXPO-CON/AGG and its co-located shows see it as a positive experience. About 80 percent of attendees at the 2008 event rated it as excellent or very good.

According to a recent AEM survey of contractors, industry customers cite new products, such as those displayed at CONEXPO-CON/AGG, IFPE and ICON, and access to industry experts as key reasons for attending these types of shows. Organizations believe the shows provide valuable benefits to attendees and exhibitors alike.

T There are times and conditions when a large excavator is not feasible, but you still need power and lifting capacity to get the job done. Komatsu’s new tight-tail-swing PC228USLC-8 provides both in a compact and efficient package.

The new PC228USLC-8 replaces the previous Dash-3 model with nearly 3,000 pounds of added counterweight mass that helps provide additional lifting capacity over the front and side. More counterweight mass adds operating weight as well and provides better stability in all digging and lifting projects, including road and bridge construction, as well as urban applications.

At the same time Komatsu beefed up the PC228USLC-8, it decreased fuel consumption and hydraulic loss through an enhanced Closed Center Load Sensing system that features variable speed matching (VSM) that optimizes performance of the engine and hydraulic systems. VSM gives operators power on demand when needed. In addition, piping size on the bucket circuit is increased, and a newly added quick-return valve reduces hydraulic loss for better efficiency.

The operator can further control efficiency using the machine’s five working modes (Power, Economy, Lifting, Breaker and Attachment) that match engine speed, pump flow and system pressure to a specific application. The PC228USLC-8 also has a one-touch Power Max Function that increases digging force by 8 percent for 8.5 seconds in hard-digging applications.

By making the PC228USLC-8 cab spacious and comfortable, Komatsu reduces operator fatigue for increased productivity. The pressurized cab minimizes the amount of dust entering the operating platform and its rigid frame is damper mounted for reduced noise and vibration levels.

“The PC228USLC-8 is really the best of both worlds,” said Morris. “You get plenty of power and stability in a more efficient package. That means lower operating costs, which is something everyone can appreciate.” n

I had just started, was learning the ropes and it put me under pressure. But it was good pressure because I learned from it, got the customer what he needed and I’m still here.

“One of Ehrbar’s strengths is the relationships it builds with customers through sales and service. I’ve worked with some of the same people since I started here. Many of them started with one machine, and now they’re calling in with orders for multiple pieces. I believe that speaks well for the level of service Ehrbar provides.”

Brown noted that filling those parts orders is more efficient today than it used to be. “Technology has translated to faster parts lookups and ordering. We have a sizeable inventory, but there are times when a part isn’t on hand. I’m able to almost instantaneously pull up on the computer where a part might be, whether it’s at another branch, a Komatsu parts depot or somewhere else, and have it to the customer usually within 24 hours.”

Lead Parts Man Bill Ehlinger, who’s been with the company 21 years, said Ehrbar goes the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. “In most cases, we have the parts on hand, whether it’s for Komatsu, Wirtgen or any other manufacturer we carry. When customers call us, my top priority is to satisfy their needs. We never turn a customer away. Sometimes that means locating a hard-to-find part for a very

old machine, or getting parts for other brands that Ehrbar doesn’t sell. If we don’t have something in stock, we have the resources to find it.”

The reputation that Ehlinger and Brown helped Ehrbar’s Holbrook parts department build led to Joe Camarda joining the parts staff 11 years ago. He assists with customer service when needed and manages the warehouse, transportation and logistics.

“I worked for another company and often called on Bill and Gordon for parts, so I knew they provided superior service. A friend of mine worked for Ehrbar, and told me it was a good company and there was opening in the parts department. I checked it out and have been here ever since.” n

A solid reputation

T Tour Komatsu’s Ripley parts facility and you will find what looks like a beehive of activity. Row upon row of parts bins stretch out in every direction. Employees on foot, on carts and on forklifts are in constant motion, darting down aisles and aisles of Komatsu parts. They’re restocking shelves and bins, pulling parts for routine and emergency distribution and working to ensure orders are filled and in customers’ hands quickly.

Sitting on 56 acres of an industrial park in Ripley, Tenn., the warehouse is Komatsu’s Central Parts Operation (CPO), the main hub that handles parts distribution for Komatsu distributors and their construction, utility and mining customers throughout the world. General Manager Terry Varner, who oversees operations, said the importance of what the CPO does cannot be overstated.

“What we do has a dramatic effect on people’s livelihood,” stated Varner, a nine-year veteran of the CPO. “We supply the parts that people make their living with, and how quickly we get parts to them often determines profit or loss on a job. It’s not like the automotive industry, where, if a part isn’t available, owners can find an alternate way to get where they’re going until it is. There are more time constraints with construction and mining businesses. We’re working to ensure they have what they need just as quickly as possible.

“For example, we have overlapping shifts throughout the day, with one time period from about noon to the middle of the afternoon that’s dedicated solely to filling emergency orders,” Varner added. “Emergency orders are shipped the same day they’re placed, no matter where the order comes from. Our goal is to get those parts where they need to be first thing in the morning. That’s not always possible on

international shipments, but limiting customer downtime is an obvious priority.”

In order to ensure that the hundreds of daily parts orders are delivered in a timely manner, the CPO is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Filling that many orders may seem like a daunting task to someone visiting the CPO — something Varner encourages — but he says it’s all in a day’s work for the dedicated and experienced staff. There are about 150 employees working at the warehouse, which has 584,000 square feet of indoor storage and another 150,000 outdoors.

“Komatsu started using this facility in 1991, and several staff members have been here since day one,” said Varner, who noted recent additions to the facility include Spanish-speaking customer service agents. “We have a very self-motivated work force

that knows exactly what to do when an order comes in, whether it’s a routine function, such as putting items in the bins, or filling an emergency order. They understand deadlines and work hard to meet them.”

More than 60 inbound trucks pull up to one of the facility’s 32 dock doors each day with parts for excavators, mining trucks, wheel loaders and every other type of equipment Komatsu manufactures. Much of the inventory is placed in bins where it’s ready to be pulled to fulfill an order. Some parts go to one of Komatsu’s eight regional parts depots in North

America, Komatsu distributors or directly to customers.

Varner noted that the CPO warehouse contains parts for new and old machinery alike. “Customers appreciate the longevity of their Komatsu equipment; that’s why we carry parts for equipment going back two decades or more. So, the customer running equipment that was manufactured several years ago can be confident we’ll have what he needs.” Varner also oversees a core processing center that’s located near the Ripley CPO. “At our core processing center, we take back old cores — engine and transmission blocks and other major components — remanufacture them and stock them here, along with new OEM parts.”

In addition to construction and mining, the CPO recently took on distribution of parts for other Komatsu products such as forklifts and industrial presses. Those additions, as well as a growing number of Komatsu machines in the field, dictated some expansion at CPO. Currently under construction is a new 100,000-square-foot addition.

“For years, many of our inbound parts have first gone through a third-party logistics company about 50 miles away before coming to us,” explained Varner. “The new addition will house that company, which will save significant time. It will increase efficiency and improve customer service.”

Those are areas the CPO staff is always striving to improve, according to George Terrell, Parts Distribution Manager. Terrell has been with Komatsu 40 years and helped set up the Ripley facility when it opened. He said technology and other initiatives have made filling customer orders faster over the years.

“It’s a never-ending task to find the most efficient and productive ways to get parts to our distributors and customers,” said Terrell. “We’re much more efficient and productive than when we started here, but we’re never satisfied. When Komatsu first moved here, order accuracy, along with other start-up issues, was a challenge. The error rate is now below 1 percent. That sounds great, but we want zero.” n

QQUESTION: How has the Newberry Manufacturing Operation (NMO) changed?

ANSWER: This facility opened in 2002 as Komatsu’s utility plant with the production of backhoe loaders, and it continued as our utility location until last year. About a year ago, we began producing wheel loaders ranging in size from the 170-horsepower WA320-6 to the 350-horsepower WA500-6. We shipped our first loader from here in December 2009 and have steadily increased production.

Primarily, it’s an assembly plant, although we do manufacture a wheel loader frame, and we have product support engineering. NMO has the capacity to produce about 900 wheel loaders a year. We’re also producing 13 models of Komatsu fork lifts in LP gas, regular gasoline and diesel configurations for both indoor and outdoor use.

QUESTION: What hasn’t changed?

ANSWER: As with all our manufacturing operations, the focus on quality remains our utmost priority. We produce some stock machines, but the vast majority of our loaders are custom-built for customers who have unique specifications for their machines that are used in a wide range of applications — agriculture, construction, forestry and mining. Those specs could include a high-lift boom, a certain size bucket or a number of other things. They rely on Komatsu machines for their livelihood, and each of the approximately 160 employees who work here understands that.

Every machine that’s shipped out of here goes through a thorough inspection to check all systems, functions and a long list of other items. NMO is certified as both ISO 9001, which means it meets strict standards of operation, and ISO 14000. The latter shows that we’re a facility focused on using environmentally sound practices.

While he’s only been working at the Newberry Manufacturing Operation (NMO) for about the last 12 months, General Manager Don Russell has been with Komatsu more than 24 years. Don started with the company as a welder in its Chattanooga plant, and while he was doing that, he took classes to earn a mechanical engineering degree and later earned a degree in business management from the University of Phoenix.

Don quickly moved into manufacturing engineering at Chattanooga, programming robots as part of his duties, and eventually became Operations Manager. About a year ago, he and his wife, Brenda, moved to Newberry where Don oversees operations of the wheel loader and forklift assembly plant.

“I’m responsible for all aspects of the operation,” said Don. “That includes planning, financial, human resources and other duties. I enjoy it because I’m working with an excellent staff of people who are dedicated to building quality products for Komatsu customers.”

Don noted that the staff has increased in size within the past few months. “We’re seeing some uptick in orders, which is good. We believe as the economy improves, we’ll see even more.”

When not at work, Don enjoys woodworking, gardening and trout fishing with the family at their cabin in the mountains of North Carolina.

standards. The ISO certifications reinforce the commitment to outstanding manufacturing practices that Komatsu has. If customers want to see that in action, we encourage them to visit the plant and take a tour. We’re always excited about the opportunity to show customers how their machines are built.

QUESTION: Do customers give you input on machine features when they visit?

ANSWER: Certainly, and we pass that along to our product marketing personnel who work more closely with customers and distributors to get feedback on development of new machines. Our primary focus is on the manufacturing process and what we can do to improve delivery of a product. One area where we work closely with customers is in quality and warranty claims. If there’s an issue, we work to resolve it quickly.

QUESTION: We’ve discussed the past and present. What’s the future hold for NMO?

ANSWER: Interim Tier 4 regulations began this year on machines in the 175- to 750-horsepower range, so we’ll start manufacturing the machines in that category. As far as that affecting our operations, it won’t have much of an impact. We’ll still continue to produce loaders using the same quality standards we always have.

The plant is 250,000 square feet of building sitting on 80 acres of land, and was built with future expansion in mind. I’m sure at some point that will be a consideration. n

C Congress is seeking to expand the power of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the wake of the tragedy at West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch mine explosion in April 2010. The Robert C. Byrd Miner Safety and Health Act of 2010 (HR 5663) would be the most far-reaching expansion of OSHA’s power since the agency’s inception. While the bill focuses on the mining industry, the sweeping OSHA expansion would affect all businesses.

The legislation, introduced by House Education & Labor Committee Chairman Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., would greatly increase and impose new criminal liability on company executives for “knowing” of OSHA violations at their business. Additionally, the bill would give OSHA inspectors (who are not industry experts) the authority to single-handedly shut down workplaces without a hearing or judicial review. HR 5663 also creates new complicated and costly procedures for adjudicating cases involving whistle-blowers who believe they received unfair treatment after reporting an unsafe condition.

The legislation is built around the costly and incorrect assumption that greater penalties and regulations yield safer workplaces. This faulty and reactionary reasoning would expand expenses on companies, particularly small businesses, yet do little to prevent accidents and increase safety.

AED joined our allies in the Coalition for Workplace Safety (CWS) in a letter to the House Education & Labor Committee expressing the view that “the provisions of this bill are not the right approach to assist both employers and employees in our

shared goal of maintaining safe and healthful workplaces.” AED is a steering committee member of CWS.

The Education & Labor Committee approved HR 5663 with a party line vote last July. However, the legislation is unlikely to be considered on the House floor in the near future and would certainly not overcome a filibuster in the Senate. AED will continue to advocate for safer workplaces and remind Congress that reactionary, punitive, and burdensome requirements will not achieve that goal. n

Study: Mass transit needs mass investment to upgrade it

“Transit remains one of the safest forms of transportation, but this report shows the clear need to reinvest in our bus, subway and light-rail systems,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. “As a nation, we must lead when it comes to infrastructure development and commit ourselves to rebuilding America.” n

A A study released by the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) shows an estimated cost of $77.7 billion to bring the nation’s mass transit systems into a state of good repair. The systems include bus and rail, with rail accounting for the largest portion of the billions needed. More than 40 percent of the nation’s buses are in poor or marginal condition.

N New York Heavy Trucking Owner Nick DiMarinis frequently hauls oversized dozers, cherry pickers and drill rigs throughout New York City and surrounding boroughs. Moving big machines in the urban area presents special challenges, but DiMarinis overcame them with the help of Edward Ehrbar and Rogers trailers. Ehrbar Sales Rep Dan Stanton put DiMarinis in touch with Rogers Regional Sales Manager Mike Flynn, who has more than 30 years experience in specialized transport. After visiting Rogers’ factory and discussing specifications with the company, Rogers engineers modified and customized a hauler to meet DiMarinis’ needs. The result allows

New York Heavy Trucking to maintain a loaded height of 13 feet six inches or lower on a 105-ton-capacity trailer. The custom trailer features wheel wells for the cherry picker and a “bucket pocket” and “boom trough” to put the bucket and stick of an excavator between the rear wheels and into the deck of the trailer.

Additionally, Rogers used air-ride suspension on all the axles, allowing the rear of the trailer to be raised and lowered in five height positions while fully loaded. A no-foot, self-lifting gooseneck quickly raises and lowers the front of the deck to clear railroad tracks or other obstructions.

“Without the accommodations built into this trailer, we would be forced to take open-air routes that would add hours to our transport time,” said DiMarinis. “The unique look and special features of the trailer have drawn crowds as we wait our turn to cross the George Washington Bridge. The modular design allows us to change out the deck, and Rogers is currently building an additional axle and booster assembly that will allow us to haul a greater variety of equipment while meeting axle requirements and maintaining maneuverability. The savings in time and effort we realized with the trailer have increased our profit.” n

A A Komatsu-sponsored car ran its first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega last Halloween. That followed the running of a Komatsu-sponsored car in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Daytona in July 2010 and

sponsorship of a car in a series of six races on the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) circuit.

“Many of our customers are racing fans, so sponsorship of race cars seemed like a natural fit for us,” said Erik Wilde, Vice President of Product Marketing at Komatsu America Corp. “We’ve enjoyed our first associations with racing owners, teams and drivers and will consider more sponsorships in 2011.”

At the Amp Energy Juice 500 at Talladega, Komatsu was primary sponsor of the No. 09 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet. The car was driven by longtime NASCAR driver Bobby Labonte.

As for the race itself, it was more trick than treat. Labonte had worked his way up as high as 11th place late in the race, but with just 16 laps remaining, the car sustained engine damage and was done for the day. The No. 09 car was credited with a 38th-place finish.

“Today was a long race,” is how Labonte summed up Talladega. “We had a great run going and were hoping to have a solid finish.”

The Komatsu-sponsored NHRA car is driven by two-time Funny Car World Champion Tony Pedregon of Pedregon Racing. Komatsu was also an associate sponsor on Tony’s brother Cruz Pedregon’s car, which took first place in the funny car class at Charlotte, N.C. in September and at Reading, Pa., in October 2010.
