HOW URBAN LANDSCAPE AND CIVIC INTERACTION CREATES A FORM AND A SENSE OF BELONGINGSituated on the periphery of Ljubljana’s city centre, this important site encompassing Plecnik’s stadium establishes an urban landscape space. This space stretches from the Dunajska cesta axis, which leads from the city centre towards the mountains, and an awxis, reminiscent of a Roman decumanus, that stems from Plecnik’s original urban masterplan. A series of architecturally framed open spaces emerge along the latter axis: Plecnik’s scenically landscaped stadium, the square-like, tree-lined street space that is framed by the existing colonnade, and the new, built topography of the Petrol corporate building. This new topography is formed by a central forecourt between two elevated terraces and a sunken landscaped garden enclosed by a new colonnade, relating to the stadium. A vertical axis in the form of a tower complements the Cartesian axis system of the two horizontal axes defi ning the open space’s location, visible from afar. The tower is shaped by generous timber fl oor plates stacked on top of each other, with a free span between the core and the eight supporting external columns, ensuring fl exibility of use. The urban design incorporates the historic elements of the site and transforms it into a sustainable open place, characterized by publicness and civic interaction,

a dialogue between past and future. Within this dialogue, the site refl ects the development of the city of Ljubljana as well as the development of the company itself. The architectural language oscillates between a Nordic landscape and Mediterranean rationalism, thus genera ting a new location close to the centre of Ljubljana that appears uniquely iconic yet timeless, evoking openness and accessibility and ultimately a sense of belonging for the staff of Petrol.

ROAD MAP FOR A NEW MOBILITY CONCEPTSSince 2007, the city of Ljubljana has taken a number of measures to promote sustainable mobility. We believe that the ongoing transformation of the transport system in Ljubljana will have a major impact on the building, its use and user satisfaction. We see a substantial expansion of sustainable modes of transport like cycling and walking and a range of smart connected sharing solutions. A strong mobility concept is based on regional require-ments, political aims and foremost on current and future needs of the employees at this specifi c location. Therefore, we recommend a user-centric service design process to develop a tailored mobility concept for the site together.

WE PROPOSE TO INTEGRATE— City logistic hub — Hub for car and bicycle sharing — Loading stations for e-vehicles — Repairing and washing station for bicycles — Comfortable parking areas — Refreshment areas for cyclists— Self Service Station

GREEN IN THE CITY – URBAN GARDENS FOR A BETTER CLIMATE AND MORE WELL-BEINGPeople need nature and cities need nature. Plants do not only have aesthetic value, they also preserve and complement green spaces, gardens and green roofs in densely built-up urban structures, and therefore have social, health, economic, ecological and climatic functions.Ljubljana was given the European Green Capital Award in 2016. This award is only allocated to cities that have succeeded in combining environmental protection and economic growth with an excellent quality of life for its citizens. The aim is to implement these qualities in the PETROL CORPORATE BUILDING and create civic places with enjoyable gardens, which are attractive for everybody: citizens, neighbours and employees. The central element of the landscape is the natural garden.

A colonnade defi nes and frames this green space designed as a contemporary interpretation of a classical landscape park. The entire inner grass and meadow area is lowered. The park is characterised by typical Slovenian tree species such as oaks, beeches, lime trees, pines, cypresses, plane trees and quaking aspens. With their diverse habitus, their blossoms and their different leaf colours they make for a unique visit. The park rustles and rushes, is fragrant and blooms and offers not only fauna and fl ora, but also a new refuge for the people here in the middle of the city. This unique natural space creates various habitats that attract bees and insects. The mystical water surface in the middle forms the actual heart of the park – it is a place for recreation, communication, games and sports. Various lawns and meadows provide inviting spaces to linger and explore. The two pavilions linked to the colonnade, housing

restaurants or event rooms, offer further attractions to the site. A fountain fi eld highlights and breathes life into the new multifunctional space between the tower and the plinth. A generous seating plateau creates a central event space for the corporate building. In addition, an adjoining podium area is planted with a sculpted landscape and individual trees. Together these elements develop a new diversity of cultivated nature, improve the urban climate and create places of opportunities with a high quality of life.

HYBRID STRUCTURE FOR FLEXIBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITYThe multi-storey building is designed as a sustainable hybrid construction made of wood and recycled concrete Elements. Primarily, local wood building materials are used. The supporting structure itself consists of a primary building spine and secondary components. A primary spine is formed by the reinforced concrete core, the eight main columns in the four facade planes and the ceiling grid in the main ceiling levels. Statically, these main ceilings are designed as an effi cient wood-concrete composite structure. At intervals of 1.5 m, glulam beams of a static height of 36 cm are supplemented with a thin 14 cm reinforced concrete ceiling to form an effi cient composite structure. In this way, a span width of 9.0 m can be robustly spanned with a minimum cross-sectional area. The four corners of the core are connected to the wooden facade beam by solid veneer beams with a height of 80 cm and a width of 8 x 75 mm. The façade beam encompassing the ceiling surface is also conceived as a veneer wood beam and has a static height of 1.2 m with the same width. The fl oor loads are transferred via the ribs of the wood-concrete composite ceiling to the main veneer beams and from there to the concrete columns and the core walls.

SMART ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES WITHINTEGRATED CLIMATE AND ENERGY CONCEPTSGeneral targets for the integrated climate and energy concept of the building are replacement of carbon emission intensive materials with recyclable carbon storage materials such as wooden slabs and structures according to cradle to cradle principles. For occupant comfort an optimized thermal and visual comfort, good air quality for the occupants, optimized solar protection, maximized use of daylight and minimized heating and cooling loads have been the targets for the concept. A building integrated concept maximizing the reduction of primary energy consumption and its carbon footprint by effi cient use of existing energy resources and renewable contributions has been developed. All radiant energy systems and the mechanical ventilation will be heated and cooled by a geothermal system using a ground water well system as a low temperature source for the heat pump and for direct cooling. This system will completely avoid the need for cooling towers on site and has a very high energy effi ciency as only the pumping electricity is invested and no chillers will have to be operated for standard operation mode.

FLEXIBLE WORKING ENVIRONMENTS, FOSTERING PRODUCTIVITY AND CONNECTIVITYIn recent years the change of globalisation, digitalization, new means of communication and increased mobility have led to the fl exibilisation of working hours and forms of work. Location-independent working has become a credo for many. But this path alone has not only led to the expected success: Direct communication, togetherness, collaborative knowledge and developing ideas together now once again demand that the offi ce shall be a place of encounter and experience that creates meaning and identifi cation. The offi ce building is the spatial basis of a networked, virtual and international working environment. It incarnates places of communication, concentration and protection. Experiences and the possibility to develop creatively and sustainably may be more important to the future workforce than status or possessions. Well-being and awareness is becoming increasingly important. Employees expect inspiration, passion, vision and social competence. The structure of the offi ce of the future should be under-stood as an open system with human beings at its centre. Open as a meeting place, open as a networked urban building block and spatially fl exible in order to make different forms of work possible – from individual units for concentrated work, to team areas, to meeting and

multifunctional zones. Transparency, communication and creativity are symbolized by an open construction method, generous façade openings, hubs and meeting areas with colleagues, clients and friends. Public catering areas, squares and green areas offer spaces and places for communication and interaction.Productivity and motivation, well-being and health of staff will be increased by plenty of daylight and good ventilation as well as open access to nature. A biophilic design focuses on the integration of natural materials like wood and plants in sustainable offi ces. To increase concentration and productivity, windows and daylight are essential as a component of vital and healthy workspaces. The urban garden, which can be used as a place for working and learning, relaxation and stress reduction, exercise and recharging batteries, helps employees to be successful and to remain successful in the long term. The space allocation plan has an optimal balance between traditional requirements of leading companies like classical single cubicle and fl exible zones to answer to those of coming generations that will create new needs and require-ments that will constantly shape the working world and corporate culture. The multipurpose areas, the exercise hall and the restaurants will offer the employees and user of the future a freedom to decide according to their personality what they need to live their individual authenticity.
