The Big, Black Whale by James K. Baxter

I wish I were a big, black whale Out in the deep, green sea. He blows like a hose Through the top of his nose As happy as a whale can be. And the sailors look pale When they hear his tail Go smack, smack, smack, On a big wave’s back Out in the deep green sea.

Buttons By Julia Donaldson There are coat buttons, shirt buttons, Cardigan and skirt buttons, Buttons on the mattress of your bed. There are loose buttons, tight buttons, Not-done-up-quite-right buttons, Buttons that are hanging by a thread.

There are minus and plus buttons, Let-me-off-the-bus buttons, Buttons on a fizzy-drinks machine. There are open-the-door buttons, Take-me-up-a-floor buttons, Buttons that turn the red man green. There are round buttons, square buttons, Eyes-on-teddy-bear buttons, Buttons on a gingerbread man’s chest But if you’re a bit like me Then I’m sure you will agree That chocolate buttons are the best.

The Excuse by Gervase Phinn

No homework, Simpkins?

No, sir.

And what, pray, is the excuse this time?

Well, sir....

No, don't tell me, Simpkins, let me guess. The dog ate it?

No sir, we don't have a dog.

Your sister was sick on it?

No, sir, I'm an only child.

You left it on the bus?

No, sir, I come to school on my bike.

Your father made the fire with it?

No, sir, we have gas central heating.

Your granny threw it in the dustbin?

No, sir, my granny's dead, sir.

A monster from outer space took it?

No, sir, there are no such things as aliens.

A ghost spirited it away?

No, sir, I don't believe in the supernatural.

Well, Simpkins, having exhausted all the possible reasons I can think of for you not handing in your

homework, I shall be most interested to know what excuse you have?

Yes, sir.

Well?

You didn't set any homework this week, sir.

Human Family by Maya Angelou

I note the obvious differences in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy. Some declare their lives are lived as true profundity, and others claim they really live the real reality. The variety of our skin tones can confuse, bemuse, delight, brown and pink and beige and purple, tan and blue and white. I've sailed upon the seven seas and stopped in every land, I've seen the wonders of the world not yet one common man. I know ten thousand women called Jane and Mary Jane, but I've not seen any two who really were the same. Mirror twins are different although their features jibe, and lovers think quite different thoughts while lying side by side. We love and lose in China, we weep on England's moors, and laugh and moan in Guinea, and thrive on Spanish shores. We seek success in Finland, are born and die in Maine. In minor ways we differ, in major we're the same. I note the obvious differences between each sort and type, but we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.

Invictus By William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
