New Practical English 1

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, a pleasant time when the weather turns warm. This festival is observed to commemorate the ancient patriotic poet, Qu Yuan.

Zongzi is a special food for this festival. It is a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice in bamboo leaves. There are various kinds of Zongzi, with both sweet and salty fillings. Dragon Boat Racing is another special activity on the very day. Chinese people will wrap and eat Zongzi and row dragon boats on the same day every year. These traditional customs remind them of Qu Yuan and inspire them to love their motherland.
