CD-ROM data-base

Quicker medical treatment isjust oneof the advantages being offered bythe latest laser disc technology. Com-prehensive, drug and other relatedinformation is available on a compactdisc data, base, Micromedex, producedby Micromedex Inc., an Americanmedical information company.

The Micromedex CD-ROM (CompactDisc-Read Only Memory) data-basehas just been released in the UKand Micromedex has appointedMicroinfo to market and distributethe new CD-ROM service.

The Micromedex data-base has fiveinformation sources:

POISINDEX- A toxicologydata-base which identifies sub-stances, referencing them bygeneric chemical, street or slangterms and giving protocols fortreatment.

DRUGDEX A drug informationsystem giving evaluations for morethan 3700 US ’ood and DrugAdministration-approved, non-US and over-the-counter drugs.

i MARTINDALE: The extra Phar-macopoeia- Summary of 5100properties, actions, and uses ofdrugs and medicines in clinical usethroughout the world.

TOMES- Information on indus-trial and environmental toxicol-ogy, as well as occupational medi-cine.

EMERGINDEX- A clinicalinformation system which presentsmedical data for clinicians in theemergency room.

IDENTIDEX- A data-base iden-tifying more than 20000 tabletsand capsules using the manufac-turer’s imprint coding and thepill’s colour and physical descrip-tion.

Formulating

The Mettler LabWare Formulatingis a new, user-friendly software pack-age that improves the productivity ofroutine jobs involving a lot of calcu-lating and recording with conven-tional methods. The package is foruse with the Epson PX-4 handheldcomputer (called HX-40 in the USA)and either one or two Mettlerbalances in production, filling plants,

stores and laboratories. It is remark-ably easy to use. All the data neededfor the mixture are keyed in andstored at the touch of a button. Noknowledge of programming or dataprocessing is required.

The computer’s display guides theuser through the stored formulas. When the formula has been selected, its code is keyed in and the nominal

weight of the mix to be prepared isspecified. As the items are weighedin, the weight of each ingredientshown on the display of the balancedecreases towards zero.

The user can define a weighing-intolerance for each ingredient of aformula. If this is exceeded whiledispensing, the system announces thefact both acoustically and visually. The system has other interestingfeatures such as tare preset (manualor automatic), a totals register andthe ability to protect the stored for-mulae with a password.

The RAM will hold up to 200 ingre-dients and 10 formulae each of 20ingredients. With a RAM disk, tapecassette or floppy disk it is possible tostore up to 100 formulae.

With a printer connected, this com-pact system produces detailedrecords of all dispensing operations. As well as the final report, it ispossible to print out the stored stan-dard formulae and also catalogues offormulae and ingredients.

The computer then communicates toboth an Anton Paar DMA-45 withRS232 interface and to an Index RICRI Detector also along an RS232

interface. Both units use differentprotocols, but these are handled by ahardware/software configurationdeveloped by Allied Data Ltd. Acompletely automated system withcontrol and selection of sample posi-tion and collection of data is pro-vided. By linking the computer to ahost computer with reference data onthe products under test, it is alsopossible to check sample specifica-tion on-line and use known testcriteria, provided by the host com-puter to set up the Density/RImeasurement collection cycle.

Storing titration methods with aPC

The VIA 101 (Radiometer) packageenables titration parameters to betransferred between the VIT90Video Titrator and a PC. Individualtitration methods can be associatedwith application information. As an

example, the delivered diskette con-tains titration parameters and appli-cation information covering 10 differ-ent pharmaceutical analyses.

The product is delivered completewith the necessary cable for any IBMPC/XT/AT compatible computer. The description is delivered both inwritten form and as part of anup-start program. Use of the pro-gram is straightforward and does notrequire any computer knowledge.

Density and refractive measure-ments

Working in association with AlliedData, of Houghton-Le-Spring, Tyneand Wear, PS Analytical has confi-gured and installed an AutomatedRefractive Index MeasurementSystem. Samples of varying viscosityand nature are held in sealed vials ona PSA 20"080 Autosampler. This islinked to the control computer usingthe PSA RS232 standard interface. This computer board is also modifiedto control an additional piston pumpto withdraw the sample and a washpump to deliver the wash medium tothe wash-out. The control computersends commands to the system toselect sample and withdraw it com-pletely through the two analyticaldevices, so that stable and reprodu-cible readings are obtained. Thecomputer sends a command to theautosampler computer system, it isexecuted and the status of the Auto-sampler returned to the control com-puter.

At its simplest the Kelgray Codeprinter produces two-part labels- thefirst part including abar codefor tagging the specimen and the other incorporating a corresponding digit numberfor the patient’s record card. (See p. 64.)

The product is particularly useful forbacking up titration methods, or formaking a temporary exchange ofsome ofthe VIT90 titration methods.

Additional texts can be written usingthe operator’s preferred text editor.

A method index is automaticallygenerated.

Mercury system

A fully automated fluorescencesystem for the analysis of mercury atextremely low levels has recentlybeen introduced by PS Analytical.Working with Spex Industries UK,PS Analytical has modified a fluores-cence spectrometer to provide opti-mum signal output from mercuryvapour produced by the hydridegenerator. A PS Analytical applica-tions note describes the analyticalconditions required and illustratesthe level of results which can beachieved, both with standards andwith real samples.

Automation is further completed bylinking through a hardware/softwaresystem to an IBM compatiblemachine. The computer not onlycontrols the instruments incorpor-ated into the system, but also calcu-lates the results by reference to astandard calibration graph.

The software allows the calculationsto be checked using standard graphpackages and to integrate the resultsinto standard IBM compatible soft-ware packages, i.e. spreadsheets, word processing for reports, trans-mission and presentation.

Lab Identikit follows Swedishsuccess

A low-cost ’bar code’ printing systemfor identifying specimens used inhospital laboratory blood, urine, andtissue analysis is being introduced toBritain by Kelgray Products Ltd

(Kelgray) of Crawley, Sussex follow-ing successful application in one ofSweden’s leading hospitals.

Kelgray’s ’Codeprinter 423’ is anintelligent and co-operative desk-topprinter providing for instant andsilent thermal printing, as and whenrequired, oflabels or tags with opera-tor-variable text and layout. Highdefinition four dots per mm quality-important for accurate bar code scan-ning- on a two-part self-adhesivelabel, produces a bar-code sticker forthe specimen container and a con-ventional digit label for the patient’sreference card or other documenta-tion.

The operator can also vary the textusing different fonts and employ hori-zontal or vertical printing, if desired, within his chosen layout.

By means of an LCD readout, vari-ous coding keys and a numeric key-pad, the Codeprinter can be user-programmed for various formats, designs and texts. A memory storesmany facilities for sequential num-bering and datacoding. Therefore asingle Codeprinter can print weeklyor monthly stocks of a variety ofsequentially numbered and bar-coded labels and tags.
