Singer and actor Pedro Infante is and will always be a Mexican icon. His career began when he assembled a minororchestra called la Rabia, touring the night club circuit before joining a major group known as Orquesta Estrella deCuliacan. In 1939 he began to pursue a solo career, singing at small venues around the city and having the opportunity tojoin a local radio station show. Pedro Infante's first record was released in December 1943. Nominated as Best Actor forhis roles in the 1947 movie Cuando Lloran Los Valientes and 1948's Los Tres Huastecos, he finally achieved the honor in1956 when the Mexican Academy awarded him for La Vida No Vale Nada. Pedro Infante, better known as the King ofMexican Bolero and the Idol from Guamuchil, died in a plane crash on April 15, 1957. More than fifty years after his death,so strong was his music that to this day, he remains among the most played on radio stations throughout mexico and theU.S. Latin stations.

Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes thesurprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he alsohas a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing,the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind,and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in abeginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality-the improviser andthe formalist-play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. Hisperformances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process ofabstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a strippeddown, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over theyears, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

In addition to his trio and solo projects, Mehldau has worked with a number of great jazz musicians, including a rewardinggig with saxophonist Joshua Redman's band for two years, recording and concerts with Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz,and recording as a sideman with the likes of Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, and Charles Lloyd. For more than a decade,he has collaborated with several musicians and peers whom he respects greatly, including the guitarists Peter Bernsteinand Kurt Rosenwinkel and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Mehldau also has played on a number of recordings outside ofthe jazz idiom, like Willie Nelson's and singer-songwriter Joe Henry's . His music has appeared in severalTeatro Scarmovies, including Stanley Kubrick's and Wim Wender's . He also composed an originalEyes Wide Shut Million Dollar Hotelsoundtrack for the French film, .
