AT KINNERET COLLEGE

History:

In 1965 a group of representatives of government, Jewish Agency and the

Jordan Valley Regional Council met to establish what was originally called

Jordan Valley College. Their concern was the development of the northern

region and the new generation of young people growing up in the towns and

settlements of the area. The attractions of the big cities in the center of the

country were obvious and something had to be done to persuade youngsters

to build their futures in the north.

A campus was created on Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) uniquely positioned

in close proximity to the borders with Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

Curriculum and Research:

Kinneret College evolved from offering post high school courses to an

academic college offering, in cooperation with Bar Ilan University, a fully

recognized B.A degree in more than 20 fields of study in social sciences, the

arts, science, and Jewish Studies. Responding to the needs of the region,

Kinneret has independently established a School of Engineering offering

B.Sc. degrees in 5 fields of Engineering; pioneered in developing a B.A

program in Tourism and Hotel Management and established a Department of

Communications. These fields of study are proving to be attractive, relevant

and practical. They will provide the manpower needed to attract new industry

With a campus located on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, a student

population that has grown to 4,000 and a dynamic developing

curriculum, Kinneret College is on the brink of accelerated growth

aiming to double its student population. The one obstacle to

achieving this goal is its physical infrastructure which is in urgent

need of expansion. Two permanent buildings now exist; the Alperin

and more services to the region.

Involvement with the region is a watchword at the College and all students

participate as volunteers in a variety of educational and social programs for

different age groups.

Recently Kinneret College has also developed 3 research centers all

connected with Northern Israel dealing with Galilean Archeology, Israel

history and the study of current security and socio-economic issues. These

research centers are poised to create the human infrastructure for academic

endeavor and become a focal point of open debate on the future of Israel.

College's facilities serving the entire student public are far from

adequate for the present student population.

Kinneret has designed a comprehensive plan for the campus and is

embarking upon a campaign to raise the funds needed to make it a

reality. The future of the College is dependent upon the fulfillment of

that campaign.

provide higher education opportunities for Israel’s Northern periphery.

Curriculum and Research:

Kinneret’s School of Engineering offers B.Sc. degrees in 5 fields: Water Industries Engineering, Electrical and

Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems Engineering and Quality and Reliability

Control Engineering. In addition, Kinneret has developed B.A programs in Tourism and Hotel Management,

Future Development:

With a student population that has grown to 3,500, Kinneret College aims to double its student population by 2015. Three

permanent buildings now exist; the Alperin building which fulfills a mix of administrative and study functions, the Triguboff

Center and the Sklare Library. The existing buildings cannot handle the expected bloom in the student population

Overview:

• The new building will be spread out over 4 floors, for a total of 3,900 square meters.

•The total cost of construction is estimated at 28 million new Israeli Shekels ( 5.9 million

•50% of the cost of construction is being provided by the Israeli Council for Higher

Education, while the remaining 50% is to come from philanthropic sources.

• Once construction is completed, this new building will provide the solution for the

College growing needs for the next 5 years.

•Groundbreaking is expected to occur May 2011, with completion on December 2012.
