    Total value of recorded building plans passed at current prices The value of recorded building plans passed (at current prices) decreased by 11,5% (-R6 353,6 million) during January to June 2017 compared with January to June 2016.

    Decreases were recorded for non-residential buildings (-31,1% or -R4 921,2 million) and residential buildings (-7,3% or -R1 966,9 million) – see Table A.     The contribution (percentage points) is calculated by multiplying the percentage change of each province between January to June 2016 and January to June 2017 by the percentage contribution of the corresponding province to the total value of building plans passed during January to June 2016, divided by 100.

    The largest negative contributions to the total decrease of 11,5% (-R6 353,6 million) were made by Gauteng (contributing -7,7 percentage points or -R4 264,8 million) and KwaZulu-Natal (contributing -5,5 percentage points or -R3 037,9 million) – see Table B.

    Real value of recorded building plans passed The real value of recorded building plans passed (at constant 2015 prices) decreased by 16,7% (-R8 803,6 million) year-on-year during January to June 2017. All three major building categories recorded decreases. The largest percentage decrease was recorded for non-residential buildings (-35,4% or -R5 369,5 million), followed by residential buildings (-12,6% or -R3 225,6 million) and additions and alterations (-1,7% or -R208,6 million) – see Table C.     Seasonally adjusted real value of recorded building plans passed The seasonally adjusted real value of recorded building plans passed decreased by 0,9% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. A decrease was recorded for non-residential buildings (-12,1%) while increases were recorded for additions and alterations (5,8%) and residential buildings (0,6%) – see Table D.

    Total value of buildings reported as completed at current prices The value of buildings reported as completed (at current prices) increased by 14,1% (R4 183,1 million) during January to June 2017 compared with January to June 2016.

    The largest increase was recorded for residential buildings (18,0% or R2 857,0 million), followed by non-residential buildings (11,0% or R953,4 million) and additions and alterations (7,4% or R372,7 million) – see Table E.

The largest contributions were recorded for Gauteng (contributing 7,4 percentage points or R2 204,3 million), Western Cape (contributing 5,8 percentage points or R1 725,8 million) and KwaZulu-Natal (contributing 4,2 percentage points or R1 241,2 million) – see Table F.

    Real value of buildings reported as completed The real value of buildings reported as completed (at constant 2015 prices) increased by 7,6% (R2 151,6 million) year-on-year during January to June 2017. Residential buildings rose by 11,3% (R1 703,5 million) – see Table G.

    Seasonally adjusted real value of buildings reported as completed The seasonally adjusted real value of buildings reported as completed increased by 4,6% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. All three major building categories recorded increases. The largest percentage increase was recorded for non-residential buildings (8,6%), followed by additions and alterations (7,1%) and residential buildings (2,1%) – see Table H.
