By Á. Soós, Budapest

In the present paper, I submit some new species found in the unidentified material of the United States National Museum, Washington. I wish to express my gratitude, also in this place, to Dr. G . O. S T E Y S K A L , my esteemed colleague and distinguished specialist of the Acalyptratae, for his kind forwarding to me of the valuable research material.

Sobarocephala testacea sp. n.

çf — Basic color brownish-yellow. Head yellow, of various hues; ocellar spot, densely plumate arista, and basal area around arista on th i rd joint deep brownish-black. Upper part of occiput, posterior two-thirds of frons brownish-yellow of a greenish hue; anterior th i rd of frons, median portion of face, mouth-parts, palpi, and antennae light yellow; lower part of occiput, cheeks, post-genae, and facial margins quite light whitish-yellow. Cephalic bristles brownish-black. Notum, pleurae, and scutellum brownish-yellow, but notum a shade darker bilaterally along notopleural suture, while sterno-, and hypopleurae lighter, whitish-yellow. Thoracic bristles brownish-black. Legs brownish-yellow, but tibia of front leg (though basic color also brownish-yellow, yet due to dense black hairs seemingly much darker) and tarsal joints black, all coxae as well as proximal ends of middle and hind femora whitish-yellow. Wings cloudy hyaline, of a pale brownish hue, without any definite or indistinct spots, at most costal margin somewhat darker. Hal tères l ight yellow. Dorsal plates of brownish-yellow abdomen ornamented wi th an irregular, brownish-black pattern: a broad, dark stripe extending medially down to pregenital segment, but stripe more or less expanding at about posterior margin of each tergite. Pregenital and genital segments, as well as hypopygium, unicolorous brownish-yellow.

Head (Fig. 1 : A) hardly, one fif th to one sixth, higher than long, and about one th i rd wider than high. Frons hardly narrowing backwards, one fourth longer than its wid th at anterior margin. Frons, measured at its narrowest point, two fifths of cephalic width. Measured at same point, width of eyes about one th i rd narrower than width of frons. Frons concave, middle of face strongly protruding, its longitudinal median line almost cristate. W i d t h of cheeks about one third of height of eyes. Postgenae strikingly broadening posteriorad; eyes trans-versally elliptical. Postvertical and ocellar bristles about equally strong, both weakly developed. Outer vertical bristles less strong, also about two f i f th shorter than well developed inner verticals. Eight-nine occipital hairs relatively

weak, upper 6—7 inclinate, lower 2 straight, reclinate. A l l three fronto-orbital bristles nearly equally long, distance between two reclinate fronto-orbital bristles two and a half times greater than that between first inclinate and first reclinate ones. Posterior reclinate fronto-orbital bristle originating about twice as far from margin of eyes as two other fronto-orbitals. Vibrissae well developed, about as long as two thirds of arista, slightly erect and rather inclinate, yet not crossing terminally. No buccal hairs (?) behind vibrissae, corner and lower margin of cheeks entirely glabrous, but postero-inferior part of postgenae wi th two genal hairs. Dorsal apical end of second joint wi th a strong, r igid bristle, about as long as ocellar bristle. Third joint subdiscoidal, hairs of densely plumate arista about two and a half to three times as long as its basal diameter.

Notum covered wi th th in , sparse, recumbent brown hairs. Two pairs of posterior dorsocentral bristles subequal, anterior pair only slightly thinner and shorter than posterior one. Pleurae glabrous, wi th some longer hairs only below mesopleural bristle. Two subapical scutellar bristles strong, well developed, slightly arched and somewhat convergent; only one pair of lateral bristles present: extremely th in , short, merely one fourth to one fif th as long as subapical ones. Fore femora wi th well developed antero- and postero-ventral row of bristles. Middle femora only wi th postero-ventral row, but bristles here much denser than on fore femora, while hind femora wi th only 3—4 bristles merely in front of distal apices antero-ventrally. Wing two and a half times as long as wide. Ratio of penultimate and ultimate sections of vein m as 1 : 3.5. Distance between two cross veins one and a half times greater than length of posterior cross vein. Pedicel of haltères short, apical clavus large, proportion of their lengths about 1:1. Abdomen covered wi th relatively long, recumbent, brown hairs. Some few hairs arising on both lateral margins of second tergite. Surstylus
