“This is yet another milestone in the rich history of Telecom Namibia – which is to-day an iconic national telecommunication asset,” remarked ICT minister Joel Kaapan-da in a speech read by his deputy Stanley Simataa at the launch event held in the capital Windhoek.

The 4G LTE services are available in the capital Windhoek and surrounding areas, as well as Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Lang-strand and Henties Bay at the coast and Ondangwa, Ongwediva, Oshakati, Ohang-wena and Oshikango in the north of the country.

Telecom Namibia’s Managing Director Frans Ndoroma said the goal was to fur-ther expand the network to other major towns in the near future so customers can experience 4G speeds even while on the move.

“Our 4G LTE is only the latest step to prove Telecom Namibia’s commitment to deliver one of the best networks in the world to Namibian consumers and businesses, backed up by the newest data dongle and

affordable data packages,” Ndoroma said.

He said the new 4G LTE network will offer Namibia and Namibians a unique mobile experience with reliable, super-fast Inter-net speeds in key areas of the country.

“We are the first network in Namibia with HSPA+ - or Evolved High-Speed Packet Access - capabilities to deliver speeds of up to 21 Mbps outside 4G coverage areas. This is three times the speed offered cur-rently in the market,” he added.

Telecom Namibia’s Chairperson, Dr Maggy Beukes-Amiss said, “Today we are able to celebrate the completion of the first phase of this multi-million project. Next year will see this infrastructure gradually being rolled out across the country in order to ensure the highest quality of service across the customer base.”

Dr Beukes-Amiss said that the 4G LTE mo-bile broadband network will be the cen-tre of Telecom Namibia’s strategic growth plans in the year ahead.”

tn mobile, the mobile telecommunication division of Telecom Namibia, the country’s premier telecommunications service provider, today launched commercial 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services in key areas of the country.

tn mobile, the mobile division of Telecom Namibia, is the first operator in Namibia to offer 4G LTE prepaid broadband service to consumers.

This follows the launch of tn mobile’s superfast 4G LTE network and services by the minister of ICT Joel Kaapanda last week.

With the tn mobile Prepaid 4G LTE, users can now enjoy faster data access on their laptops and PCs on tn mobile’s 4G LTE net-work, with theoretical download speeds of up to 100Mbps.

The tn mobile Prepaid 4G LTE is available at N$298 and comes with a Dongle bundled with free 500 MB data. The out of bundle rate is 95 cents per MB.

The service is currently available in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay, Ondangwa, Oshakati, Ongwediva, Ohangwena and Oshikango.

Outside the 4G LTE coverage area users will be served by tn mo-bile’s 3G HSPA+ network with theoretical download speeds of up to 21Mbps and upload of 5.76Mbps, which makes it the fastest 3G service in the country. “Where the 3G/HSPA+ network is not available our 2G network will do the job. So we always have you covered,” explains Chris Keeping, Chief Mobile Officer at Telecom Namibia.

“We will continue to enhance and expand our 4G LTE network coverage to key towns around the country,” Keeping added.

“Leveraging on our new 4G LTE network, we are glad to offer the country’s first 4G LTE prepaid broadband service. Our prepaid users are now able to enjoy ultra-fast 4G LTE data access and an enhanced

tn mobile brings prepaid broadband users onto 4Gmobile experience,” says Oiva Angula, senior manager for corporate communications and public relations at Telecom Namibia.

“We also offer an uncongested 4G LTE experience in Windhoek with our 4G LTE basestations covering the capital city and surroundings. No other operator has our number of basestations to provide the quality and speed customers want,” Angula said.

Following successful negotiations between Telecom Namibia and Mobile Telecommunications (MTC), the Communications Regula-tory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has reduced the rates paid by customers to mobile and fixed operators for carrying calls from across their networks. The rates have been reduced from N$0.30 to N$0.20 from 1 November 2013.

The interconnection rate for sms between operators has also been reduced from N$0.20 to N$0.01 across all telecommunica-tion providers.

Interconnection rates in Namibia have been decreased from N$1.02 to N$0.30 since July 2009 for both mobile and fixed operators.

According to CRAN the reduction in rates led to fairer competition, lower prices, better services, more jobs, more investments and an expansion in the market.

“These [new] rates will assist new entrees into the market to be-come more competitive, since the rates reduce the cost operators pay to each other to carry calls and will over a long term period, benefit the consumer who will be paying less for voice calls or sms costs,” said Stanley Shanapinda, chief executive officer of CRAN.

“The average person consumes around 6,000 calories on Christmas day,” says Luise Marino, paediatric dietitian and author of Momen-tums e-cook-book. “That’s enough food for a woman for three days!”

And most people don’t just over-eat on Christmas day. Those left-overs can last for days. More stilton, anyone?A moment on the lips…“Weight gain over Christmas is common,” says Luise. “Come Jan-uary, though, it can be difficult to shift.”

According to the British Dietetic Association (BDA) people gain 2kg, on average, over Christmas.

A lot of people say, well it’s just once a year. What does it matter if I let my hair down? “But don’t use it as an excuse,” says Sian Porter, a dietitian and spokesperson for the BDA. “At this time of year, it’s easy to hide under your layers of woolly jumpers and ignore what’s going on underneath them.”

One way of not letting the eating get out of control, says Sian, is to stick to normal meal times.

How to have a healthy Christmas

Start with a healthy breakfast, preferably one that is going to keep you full for a while, such as porridge oats or a smoked-salmon bagel. That way you won’t be tempted to dip into the snacks as much.

NibblesThe calories in snacks can quickly mount up. A single mince pie packs about 250 calories. A couple of those are equivalent to a quarter of the guideline daily calorie intake for a woman or a fifth of the calorie intake for a man.

“Canapés and crisps can be really high in calories and fat,” says Luise. “Why not use fresh vegetables with low fat dips instead, and rather than putting out crisps, offer bowls of popcorn.”

Chestnuts, dates and satsumas also make healthy, seasonal snacks.

Bird is the wordHowever, snacks are just a side-show. The main event is Christ-mas dinner and although it’s never going to be a low calorie affair, there are ways of making it a healthier meal.

There are many fine Christmas traditions—mince pies, roast turkey, dodgy jumpers—but being healthy is not one of them.

First of all, there’s the bird.“Whatever bird you choose to cook—be that duck, chicken, goose or turkey—they all are rich in protein and fat-soluble vitamins, which are essential for muscle repair and neuron function,” says Abigail Wilson, director of eDietitians. “Of these, turkey is the leaner meat and possibly the healthier option with significantly less fat than duck or goose.”

Before cooking, Luise rec-ommends pricking the skin of the bird so that fat can drain out.

For the non-carnivoreIf you’re a vegetarian, you might want to consider a nut roast, says Abigail. Aside from being rich in healthy unsaturated fats, nuts are also a good source of protein, fibre and a host of micronutrients, in-cluding folic acid, niacin, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. They also contain phytosterols which help to lower cholesterol. Although nuts are a calorie-dense food a recent study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that people who regularly eat nuts are slimmer than those who don’t eat nuts. More importantly, the researchers found that people who ate a daily handful of nuts were 20% less likely to die, from any cause, over a 30-year period than people who don’t regularly eat nuts.

Veg“People often eat the most vegetables in the week when they have a roast, so Christmas dinner is an ideal time for eating lots of veg,” says Sian.

But make sure they’re cooked healthily.

“When you cook your veggies, cook them in the minimum

amount of time with the minimum amount of water,” says Sian. “And use the cooking water to make gravy with, because then it’s like eating soup. You get all the goodness out of it.”

DessertEven dessert doesn’t have to be unhealthy.Although traditional Christmas pudding is high in calories, it is also a good source of fibre, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Just keep your portion size under control and don’t go adding brandy butter or cream. Try custard or half-fat crème fraiche instead.

“If you’re having something rich and creamy, have an alternative,” says Sian. “You can make a big bowl of fruit salad so that people have an option.”

Stay activeWith all that eating, the torpor sets in. But don’t be tempted by the sofa. You might stay there until bedtime. “Try and get out and about to blow the cobwebs away,” says Sian. “Often people finish work, pull up the drawbridge and don’t go out for days. But it’s really important that they remember to be physically active as well.” That doesn’t mean you have to do a Zumba class on Boxing Day. A walk in the park shortly after a meal is a good way to stay healthy. …but don’t forget to have fun!“Christmas is fun, it’s enjoyable, so go for it,” says Sian. “But defi-nitely don’t make it go on and on and on. Enjoy the day, but then it’s business as usual.”

Luise advises an “80:20 approach”, where 80% of the time you are good and 20% of the time you indulge a little.

Go for a brisk 15 minute walk half an hour after your Christmas dinner.
