Recently allocated into the genus Vitreorana (Guayasamin et al., 2009), Vitreorana eurygnatha (Lutz, 1925) is a small and slender glassfrog, with a green dorsal pattern with small dark dots, transparent venter, hands and feet green-yellowish, semicircular (dorsal view) or rounded (lateral view) snout, eyes forward with horizontal and elliptic pupils (Haddad and Sazima, 1992; Ribeiro et al., 2005). It inhabits forested areas from 60 to 1,700 meters asl (Salles et al., 2009), in various localities of the states of Rio de Janeiro (Rocha et al., 2004; Silva et al., 2008; Salles et al., 2009, Izecksohn and Carvalho-e-Silva, 2010), São Paulo (Heyer et al., 1990; Pombal Jr. and Haddad 2005; Ribeiro et al., 2005; Serafim et al., 2008), Espírito Santo (Heyer, 1985; Almeida et al., 2011), Santa Catarina (Heyer, 1978; Heyer, 1985; Lucas, 2008), Minas Gerais (Nascimento et al., 1994; Eterovick and Sazima, 2004, Canelas and Bertoluci, 2007; Cruz et al., 2009; São Pedro and Feio, 2011), and in the south and north portions of the state of Bahia (Freitas et al., 2004; Freitas et al., 2007; Tinoco et al., 2008). During the faunal rescue operation owing to the filling of the Corumbá IV Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir, located in the municipality of Luziânia, state of Goiás (-16.358056°S, -48.306111°W) (Figure 1), on 04 July, 2005, we collected a single specimen of Vitreorana eurygnatha (Figures 2A, B e C). This is the first record of this species for the state of Goiás and the Central part of Brazil representing the westernmost known distribution for this taxon within the Cerrado biome, and located 590 Km from Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais state, the previous west limit of distribution. The specimen was deposited on the amphibian collection of the Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas Biológicas (CEPB) of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Goiás (PUC Goiás) under the voucher number CEPB 7712. The specimen of V. eurygnatha of this new record fully agrees with the diagnosis present by Heyer et al. (1990) and Guayasamin et al. (2009) and with analyzed specimens de V. eurygnatha (MZUSP 35437-39) deposited in Museum de Zoology of Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP). Previously known from the coastal Atlantic forest of Bahia to Santa Catarina state and some localities of the state of Minas Gerais, the presence of this species in central Cerrado in Goiás state can be explained by the strong resemblance between the vegetation formations of the Atlantic Forest of southern and southeastern Brazil and the gallery and riparian forests of central and southern Cerrado (Oliveira-Filho and Ratter, 2000). This similarity in flora may have favored the distribution of this species into the Cerrado of Central Brazil. In the available literature there is a consensus that the species is under populational decline since the 1980’s without further records in southern and northeastern Brazil (Ribeiro et al., 2005; Tinoco et al., 2008). The reason for this decline is unknown as they have occurred even in environments without any human pressure (Haddad and Sazima, 1992). However, the fragmentation and elimination of natural habitats seem to be the main reason for the decline of this species. Despite the classification as Least Concern (LC) by IUCN this taxon is listed as threatened in the state of Espírito Santo (Gasparini et al., 2007). The record of a single specimen of V. eurygnatha collected during a faunal rescue that totaled 21,376 amphibian specimens suggests an extremely low local abundance (0.004%) and is the evidence of the survival threat to this species in the state of Goiás. Therefore additional efforts should be implemented in the region to better assessment the population status of this species.
