Transition from Reception to
Year One
• Timetable is similar to the one children had at
end of Reception- still a focus on Learning
Through Play.
• Phonics structured in a similar way.
• Children moving on to National Curriculum as and when they are ready.
• Opportunities for adult directed and independent work.
• Emphasis still on topic being linked to children’s interests.
• Many consistencies through school- Home Learning/ Reading Books/Challenges/Star Award
How can you support your child
with this Transition?
By encouraging your child to:
• Come in on their own in the morning.
• Change their own reading book with the support of their teacher or TA.
• Give letters to the teacher or put in the green tray.
• Dress themselves.
• Learn to tie shoe laces if they have them.
• Please name all of your child's clothing as this makes it much easier for them when changing for PE.
Timetables • Usually, mornings will consist of Phonics, English,
Guided Reading and Maths
• In the afternoons – PE, Computing, PSHE, Music, RE and Topic.

This brings together learning objectives from a range of curriculum areas such as: Science History Geography Art Design Technology Computing Music
In Year 1 we continue to encourage a partnership between
home and school, alongside the Home School Agreement
you signed when your child started school.
A new challenge is sent home weekly linked to something we
have or will be learning. This must be your
child’s work with parental encouragement/
support.
Home Learning will be shared weekly.
All Home Learning Books must be in school on a Friday.
Extra ideas are available on the topic web.
Home Learning
New Curriculum
• The expectations for children in Year 1 have been
raised.
• This is nothing to worry about.
• It just brings the National Curriculum in line with the
revised EYFS from last year.
• Literacy is now English – there is now an increased
focus on grammar and punctuation.
• ICT is now computing.
• Maths – there is a focus on fluency of basic facts.
English
• Daily English Lessons.
• Discrete phonics sessions x 4 per week
• Creative writing – fortnightly
• Handwriting – weekly and a follow up in fine motor.
• Speaking & Listening/Talk Partners
Handwriting
• Expectations for handwriting are…..
- Children to use correct pencil grip.
- Sit correctly when writing.
- Place other hand on paper.
- Left-handed writers to use a
writing grid.
- Have their feet flat on the floor.
- Head up and not resting on table
or hand.
Phonics
• We follow the Letters and Sounds programme.
• Children work in small groups appropriate to their phase.
• Key words for reading or spelling will be in the back of
your child's reading records.
• A phonics check will take place in the Summer Term.
Guided Reading Children work in small groups
Activities will include:
• Guided Reading.
• Individual Reading.
• Reading Comprehension.
• Listening to story CDs or tapes
• A Computing based activity relating to English/Phonics

Maths
A maths session will include:
• A mental and oral starter – Number Bonds to 10
• The main teaching point, related to number, calculation, shape, space and measures or problem solving within these areas.
• Short, practical group activities for the children to apply their learning.
• A mini plenary and a plenary will be used to revisit and reinforce learning.
• Learning through Play activities to support, consolidate and apply learning.
• One of our morning sessions with be a fine motor Math's activity.

What do children need in school? • A named PE kit – indoor and outdoor. These will be sent
home before a holiday.
• Hair bands/safety tape – Health & Safety.
• Water bottle- on table as they come in.
• Reading book & record even if not read- always goes in
the baskets.
• Wellies – please use wellie racks outside the Year 1
classrooms.
How can you help us?
• Read the newsletter and class notice boards.
• Donation for cooking, gardening etc.
• Home learning.
• Reading at home- listening to and sharing stories.
• Volunteering to help on regular basis –
reading, cooking, gardening or any skills you can offer.
• Junk for model making – exceptions- egg cartons, toilet rolls, pizza trays.
• Donating any old toys / games/ role-play items.
