Local Member Terry Redman MLA said: “The completion and opening of the new user-friendly jetty, more than two thirds funded by Royalties for Regions, is exciting news for Walpole. “It provides improved access to the marine park which is becoming increasingly popular” He cited estimates of up to 10,000 vessel launches per year. Dear Editor, “Environmental vandalism”; are you kidding me!?

Take a short drive up North Walpole Road and you will see real environmental vandalism. The Shire of Manjimup has had both sides of North

Walpole Road (and side roads) sprayed with herbicides killing virtually everything either side. Dead and dying are sheoaks, zamia palms, grass trees, tassel flowers (Walpole‟s emblem) plus other native shrubs and grasses. The Shire has demonstrated little regard for native vegetation in their hypocritical and non-caring attitude. You only have to look at the spraying that Denmark

Shire has done on their road verges to see that it can be done selectively and carefully.

—Name withheld by request

No comment On Thursday, September 3 the Weekly asked the Shire if it would like to respond to the two letters above. On Monday the Shire indicated that it was “choosing not to comment”.

Are you kidding me!?

Dear Editor, A few days ago, I received the Rate Notice through the post; a bill to be paid into the coffers of the Shire of Manjimup for the workings of the Shire. But alas, my monies and that of a few other

Walpole households have already been frittered away due to the hullabaloo down on the foreshore of our inlet. I‟m referring to the alleged illegal clearance of bushland and the Shire‟s reaction thereto in having erected three signs, and having to re-erect them after some idiot vandal decided they weren‟t „nice‟.

Maybe some community member has erred in their judgement that clearing a few bushes and trees would not be noticed, but whoa, the Shire are up in arms and are offering a „grande‟ reward to the dobber-in who

reveals the culprit. It won‟t happen, I hope, not while the proletariat of Walpole are thinking it‟s all a damn waste of money in being so serious about something that has done the visual environment of the inlet a favour. Yes, the through-the-trees aspect of the inlet is beautiful, and should be taken as an example that more

of the same will enhance our foreshore and give our town a more pleasing feature.

So let the Shire put up their visual garbage and waste our monies, but in my mind it‟s an expensive and poor overreaction! —Peter Newton

Shire overreaction!

Dear Editor, We are sending this email so that we can register our very strong disgust and amazement at the erection of some ugly and very expensive signs on Walpole

Street, which apparently object to vandalism!

Not only are they very ugly, they are unnecessary. Regardless of who has done this little bit of clearing, the overreaction by a handful of people does not warrant the Shire‟s response. If anything the clearing has enhanced the view of the inlet. It is very pleasing to drive around there now and see our beautiful water views. Why can‟t we show off Walpole and our assets? To the people who object all we can say is that this

is a first-world problem and you are living a very insular life. Being owners of a business in Walpole the feedback from our customers has been the same; disbelief. Let‟s get a grip and not pander to the few negative people who have a problem with promoting our beautiful town and showing it off at its best. —Norm & Sue Hawkins

have been recycled and used for seating and lighting structures to honour its historical connection.”

The local MLA said the project, worth around $900,000, was jointly funded by the State Government‟s Royalties for Regions through the Department of Transport‟s Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme ($676,500), the Department of Parks and Wildlife, and the involvement of the Shire of Manjimup and local community.

By Geoffrey Newby The trans-Europe/Asia „Orient Express‟; the train made famous in Agatha Christie‟s crime series, was

on route from Vienna to Budapest in December 2000 when it began to slow and halt. From my passenger window I looked out upon a frozen landscape to a Hungarian border post. Emerging from this dilapidated

building, grim-faced guards headed for our stationary train and burst through our carriage door to

demand passports. Faced with guns at the ready, no translator, and no desire to parley, our explanations of Australian Foreign Affairs informing us that traveller‟s visas were not required fell on deaf ears. A fellow Australian and I were

forced to clamber down onto the

rail track from whence we were escorted to a holding room to await

our fate. After several hours we were placed on an outgoing train back to Vienna; my passbook

stamped “deported”. Later, news reports revealed that an Australian gold mining company had been responsible for cyanide

leaking into Hungary‟s waterways, killing all the fish. Was this the reason

for our exclusion? Recent images of Syrian refugees forced off what is possibly that same train reminded me of my abortive journey to Budapest. Last Sunday, Refugee Sunday, St George‟s Walpole and Christians

everywhere prayed for those seeking asylum.

Over the past week the

Hungarian blockade was lifted and desperate refugees were assisted by authorities to reach Austria, for which thanksgiving is made to that

refugee of refugees, Jesus Christ. We now pray that our government will be equally

generous in taking asylum seekers, for there are many welcoming homes in this great nation.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast Saturday October 24, 2015 from 8am at Walpole Community Hall

National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Pink Ribbon Breakfasts raise funds for vital life-changing breast cancer research.

One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and seven women die from breast cancer EVERY DAY in Australia.

Walpolian Gary Muir will showcase his boot cleaning station at a field day on September14 . His Phytofighter 3000 (Phytofighter 1000 pictured right) helps prevent dieback in the region‟s iconic bushland.

Mr Muir, who in 2014 was awarded the Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) Medal and its associated $12,000 grant, will demonstrate his invention at the GSDC Medal Field Day. Mr Muir will also talk about other environmental work that he has undertaken using the medal grant.

GSDC Chairman Peter Rundle said the Field Day was a great opportunity for community members to chat directly with Mr Muir and experience his enthusiasm for natural resource management.

“Mr Muir has been an asset to the region for many years with his work not only in natural resource management, but also in the tourism sector through his dynamic tour company,” Mr Rundle said. “The GSDC has been delighted to see the breadth of work that Mr Muir has been able to achieve with the GSDC medal grant, with the money being invested into

furthering biodiversity and education initiatives.” The GSDC Medal Field Day will take place at the

WA Museum Co-Op Building on September 14,

10.30am to 1.30pm. Tickets are $10 per person including a light lunch and can be reserved by contacting the GSDC; [email protected] or 9842 4888. Mr Muir was awarded the GSDC Medal in 2014 for

his dedication to natural resource management in the Great Southern region.

Last week‟s Pink Ribbon Breakfast advertisement—designed and copy-written by the Weekly in good faith—incorrectly indicated that the event was affiliated

with the Cancer Council. Pink Ribbon Day is associated with the Council. Pink Ribbon Breakfasts are affiliated with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Please see the updated ad below which includes worrying statistics about breast cancer in this country.

By Justine Gamblin The first Walpole 3D Art Award is due to open in October as part of the Bendigo Bank Southern Art and

Craft Trail. Anecdotal evidence tells us that many creative locals are busy working away on their entries in a variety of media including woodwork, jewellery and glass. Traditionally the Walpole Art

Award was a 2D event—paintings, drawings, photography, print-making—and took place on the Labour Day long weekend in March. However that weekend has

become busier and now sees a long list of events taking place in the south-west including the Walpole and Denmark Markets, the Walpole in the Trees Regatta, and the Nannup Music Festival.

Art Award organisers the Walpole & Districts Senior Accommodation Group (WADSA), made the decision in 2014 to move the event to the October school

holidays to coincide with the Southern Art & Craft Trail. They are very excited to also be organising the first 3D award. The 2D Award will take place on alternate years.

Bendigo Bank Southern Art & Craft Trail booklets are out and the Walpole Art Award is on the list. Even if you are not entering your

own work, don‟t forget to schedule a visit to the exhibition to see a mix of quality 3D art work. Generous awards are on offer, including the $500 first prize. Get organised and ready to participate in this popular

community fundraising event. Entry forms can be found around

town at the CRC, Visitors Centre, and Post Office and it‟s not too late to organise your entries—up to three per person. Entry forms are due in by September 15. See us on Facebook: facebook.com/walpole.art.award

Talented local artists Liz Edmonds (pictured below) and Penny Jewell (pictured right) are in the final

stages of preparation for the „Glimpse‟ exhibition at the Tree Top Walk; part of the 2015 Bendigo Bank Southern Art & Craft Trail. The Trail will have more than 74 venues across the region showing simultaneous exhibitions of the best

art and craft in the Great Southern. Tree Top Walk business manager Julie Ross said the exhibition of paintings, drawings, textiles and mixed media would

capture the natural environment of the south-west. “The artworks created so far for the exhibition are inspirational. “Both artists are getting very

excited,” she said. “With Penny and Liz involved, the exhibition will be stunning and

will contain many eclectic pieces, Ms Ross added. The exhibition also forms part of the Valley of the Giants Spring

Holiday activity program, which

provides a range of activities at the Tree Top Walk, including bug hunts, forest by night, and under the Tree Top Walk activities.

„Glimpse‟ will be open 10am-4pm, September 26 to October 11.

By Kevin & Margot Pierce It was a wonderful afternoon last Saturday, September 6 at the Walpole Recreation Centre as Helen Pierce celebrated her 90th Birthday with members of her

extensive family, and friends. The room was abuzz as everyone relaxed and had the time to chat and enjoy afternoon tea. Blustery conditions outside made for a very convivial get-together inside. Helen‟s second eldest son, Kevin, provided a brief

history of his mother‟s childhood at Nornalup followed by married life with Helen‟s husband Frank on the dairy and beef cattle farm at Hazelvale; raising their four boys: Alan, Kevin, John and Leslie.

A significant number of Helen‟s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present at the function. Helen shares her birthday with great grandson Blake and granddaughter Sarah. They had a special birthday the day before. Long-time family friend, Molly Smith, recounted the very busy time of raising their families and that the

weather was always an important topic for discussion between their husbands.

After moving to Walpole in 2010, Helen has

continued to lead a full and interesting life with her involvement with numerous community groups.

She has also taken on new challenges such as learning to use a computer. Helen—so appreciative of all the family and friends

present to share her day—thanked everyone and then cut the beautiful cake.

Helen’s 90th: a party to remember

Mr Boyle says her best years are yet to come.

The organisers of a national competition have invited Sugar to participate. Unfortunately the Boyles are unable to travel to

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are a group of conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. These effects can include physical problems and problems with behavior and learning. Often, people with FASDs have a mix of these problems. If you think your child might have an FASD, talk to your health care provider.

What are FASDs? FASDs refer to a range of effects that can happen to a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. These conditions can affect each person in different ways, and can range from mild to severe. They can affect the mind or the body, or both. Because FASDs make up a group of disorders, people with FASDs can exhibit a wide range and mix of symptoms. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is one condition among the full range of FASDs. A baby born with FAS has a small head, weighs less than other babies, and has distinctive facial features. Some of the behavioral and intellectual disabilities of people with FASDs include: • Difficulty with learning or memory • Higher than normal level of activity (hyperactivity) • Difficulty with attention • Speech and language delays • Low IQ • Poor reasoning and judgment skills People born with FASDs can also have problems with their organs, including the heart and kidneys.

What causes FASDs? FASDs are caused by a woman’s drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol in the mother’s blood passes to the baby through the umbilical cord. When a woman drinks alcohol so does her baby. There is no known amount of alcohol that is safe to drink during pregnancy or when trying to get pregnant. All drinks that contain alcohol, including wine and beer, can harm an unborn baby. There is no safe time to drink alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol can harm a baby at any time during pregnancy. So, to prevent FASDs, a woman should not drink alcohol while she is pregnant, or even when she might get pregnant. This is because a woman could get pregnant and not know it for up to 4 to 6 weeks. In the United States, nearly half of all pregnancies are unplanned.

How many people have FASDs? We do not know exactly how many people have an FASD. Few estimates are available. Based on community studies using physical examinations, experts estimate that the full range of FASDs among 6-7 year old children in the United States and some Western European countries might be as high as 2 to 5 out of 100 school children (or 2% to 5% of the population). Are there treatments for FASDs? FASDs last a lifetime. There is no cure for FASDs, but research shows that early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development. There are many types of treatment options, including medication to help with some symptoms, behavior and education therapy, parent training, and other approaches. No one treatment is right for every child. Good treatment plans will include close monitoring, follow-ups, and changes as needed along the way. There are a number of factors that can help reduce the effects of FASDs and help people with these conditions reach their full potential. These factors include:

Diagnosis before 6 years of age

A loving, nurturing, and stable home environment during the school years

Absence of violence

Involvement in special education and social services

What can I do if I think my child has an FASD? Ask for a Referral If you or your health care provider thinks your child could have an FASD, ask your provider for a referral to a specialist (someone who knows about FASDs), such as a developmental pediatrician, child psychologist, or clinical geneticist. In some cities, there are clinics whose staff have special training in diagnosing and treating children with FASDs. For providers and clinics in your area, visit the National and State Resource Directory from the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS) www.nofas.org/resource-directory/ or call 800–66–NOFAS (66327). Get an Evaluation Call your state’s public early childhood system to request a free evaluation to find out if your child qualifies for intervention services. You do not need to wait for a health care provider’s referral or a medical diagnosis to make this call. Steps for a free evaluation from the state depends on your child’s age: For children younger than 3 years old, contact your local early intervention system at www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/parents/states.html. To learn more, visit www.parentcenterhub.org/repository/eioverview/ or call (973) 642-8100. For children 3 years old or older, contact your local public school system. Even if your child is not old enough for kindergarten or enrolled in a public school, call your local elementary school or board of education and ask to speak with someone who can help you have your child evaluated. To learn more, visit http://www.nofasd.org.au/ or speak to you local GP. To help your child reach his or her full potential, it is very important to get help for FASDs as early as possible!
