Critical Mass Todd Stalter
Winter Concert 2014 11
Program Notes
Critical Mass“Critical Mass” is a scientific term that refers to the smallest amount of fissile material needed to sustain a nuclear chain reaction. Stalter’s work begins with an explosion of sound, then launches forward through small, ever-growing melodic fragments that expand outward and upward. Ostinati and lively, bold rhythmic statements are present throughout the work, which ends in an almost violent display of musical imagery.
Regenesis (Song of the Planet)Regenesis is a descriptive overture, written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the cataclysmic eruption of Mount St. Helens in May, 1980. With the force of 500 Hiroshima bombs, its towering wall of destruction enveloped over 230 square miles of forest and wildlife. Sixty people were drawn into its deadly embrace. Subtitled “Song of the Planet,” the piece reflects the ever-changing life cycles of our ecological system, in which a suffocating swath of devastation can become a crucible of creation. It is organized into five continuous sections: Vista, Warming, Cataclysm, Void and Renewal.
The Big CageIn 1910, Karl King began his career as a circus musician, first as a baritone player and later as conductor of bands with prominent circuses of the day. During this period he composed many musical selections for specific circus acts and bands with which he was affiliated. The quantity, quality, and the enduring appeal of those works have easily established Mr. King as the true “king” of circus music composers.
While Mr. King retired from trouping with circuses in 1918, he continued to maintain friendships with many circus performers and musicians. He continued to compose music with a distinct circus flavor, and in 1934 wrote what is perhaps his most famous circus galop, The Big Cage. It was dedicated to Clyde Beatty, the most famous lion trainer of his day, and arguably of all time. Mr. King performed this galop quite frequently with his own band in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and it has remained popular with numerous bands over the years.
Please remain in your seats and refrain from using flash photography while the performance is in progress.
Program NotesO Magnum MysteriumMorton Lauridsen is a long-time faculty member at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, where he founded the advanced studies program in scoring for motion pictures and television. He is best known for his art songs and choral works. Originally written for the Los Angeles Master Chorale, O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery) has become one of the world’s most performed and recorded compositions since its premiere in 1994. The composer wrote about this work: “For centuries, composers have been inspired by the beautiful “O Magnum Mysterium” text with its depiction of the birth of the newborn King among the lowly animals and shepherds. This affirmation of God’s grace to the meek and the adoration of the Blessed Virgin are celebrated in my setting through a quiet song of profound inner joy.” The arrangement for symphonic winds by H. Robert Reynolds has the approval and appreciation of the composer.
Into the Raging RiverInto the Raging River is a programmatic tone poem for symphonic band. The piece was inspired by a whitewater rafting trip on the Gauley River in the mountains of southern West Virginia. The opening of the composition begins as dawn breaks over the river with a single ray of light. Throughout the piece Reineke depitcts the journey of the river, running the rapids and ending with a heroic plunge over Sweets Falls.
First Suite in EbIn 1909, when this suite was written, concert wind and band music consisted of reductions of pieces originally scored for orchestras. Thus the suite was revolutionary in that it was written exclusively for wind band and is considered Holst’s first step toward achieving his goal of making the concert band a serious concert medium. It was originally written for Military Band, and a full score arranged with additional parts to make it suitable for melody that is passed throughout the band. The lively Intermezzo shows Holst’s mastery in writing for woodwinds. The closing March combines two folk song melodies with counterpart in the finale. Holst was well suited for his role as concert band composer, having played trombone in various groups in England and Scotland for years.

El Camino Real (A Latin Fantasy)New York-born composer Alfred Reed served in the 529th Army Air Corps Band during World War II. He wrote this work, translated as the Royal Road or the King’s Highway, on commission from the 581st Air Force Band and its Commander. Reed completed it in 1985 and gave it the subtitle “A Latin Fantasy.” According to Reed, the composition is based on a series of chord progressions common to countless generations of Spanish Flamenco guitarists “which have become synonymous with what we feel to be the true Spanish idiom.” Reed was one of America’s most prolific and frequently performed composers, with more than two hundred published works for concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, chorus, and chamber ensemble.
Toccata and Fugue in D MinorAmong Bach’s many claims to greatness is his treatment of the organ and his appreciation of it as a vehicle for creative art. Some of his grandest conceptions are to be found in his organ works, and the Preludes and Fugues include many of his loftiest compositions for the instrument. The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, classed among these, consists of a brilliant introduction, alternating slow and fast, followed by the fugue, the subject of which is a short figure in sixteenth notes. The title “Toccata and Fugue” may be interpreted as describing the fact that the fugue is preceded by a toccata, which, in the modern sense, we understand as a brilliant composition (having great clarity of tone) for technical display. After the announcement of the theme, the rhythm of sixteenths continues almost without interruption to the coda.
Folk DancesComposed in Shostakovich’s light-hearted style, this single-movement work is filled with the joy and exuberance of the Russian people. The many folk melodies are combined in a string so that musical energy abounds, and the spirit of folk dances can easily be imagined. The first version of Dmitri Shostakovich’s composition was instrumented by M. Vakhutinsky for Russian bands.

Finale from Symphony No. 5In his Fifth Symphony, Shostakovich returns to a more conventional style of composition after a stream of politically controversial writings. It is written in the standard four-movement format and uses readily accessible musical language. Although this symphony is an “absolute” piece of music (i.e., there is no extra-musical story or narrative attached to it), Shostakovich did include a brief description of “a lengthy spiritual battle, crowned by victory” in the original program notes.
In tonight’s program, we hear the finale to this four-movement masterpiece. Opening with a firestorm of sound, announced by pounding timpani and a blazing brass fanfare, the rondo structure of this movement allows Shostakovich to return to this theme again and again, interspersed with contrasting interludes and melodies. In this movement, Shostakovich’s seemingly endless power of invention is unleashed with defiant abandon. In a quiet interlude that directly precedes the coda, Shostakovich quotes a song that he set to words of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin:
And the waverings pass awayFrom my tormented soulAs a new and brighter dayBrings visions of pure gold.
Despite this quotation and the seeming triumph with which the Fifth Symphony ends (with a final blast from the brasses), Shostakovich, perhaps enigmatically, called its conclusion an “irreparable tragedy.”
