Next Steps With the Employee Engagement Survey Thanks to everyone who participated in the recent Employee Engagement Survey. Your input is valuable! We would like to take this opportunity to share with you next steps in the process so you understand Covenant Health’s commitment to furthering our connections as a result of the survey. Several months ago, every ministry picked an employee to serve on the St. Joseph Health Action Team. This team approved a plan to communicate survey results, recognize high-scoring departments, and ensure that the organization is accountable to your feedback. Ministry executive teams and leadership teams will soon start reviewing their specific results. By the end of August, all employees will see the survey results from their ministries and departments. These results will help us focus on areas for improvement and recognize areas in which we are doing well. Thank you again for all you do. Without you, we would not be able to continue to carry out our mission of extending the healing ministry in our communities.

SJH Institutional Review Board Launched Another milestone of the Research Value Imperative was reached, supporting our values of Justice and Excellence, with the launch in May of the SJH Institutional Review Board (IRB) committees. The IRBs include representation from all ministries conducting research and are responsible for protecting the rights of human subjects who participate in research studies conducted across SJH, consistent with our values and regulations. The IRBs are part of the new SJH Center for Clinical Research, comprised of the Central Office of Research Administration (CORA) and Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) Office, which has positioned SJH to be an innovator and support excellence in patient care in clinical research. “We are already seeing the early benefits of this new structure, including expansion of ministry participation, identification of new research opportunities, and improved compliance with complex regulations,” said Margaret Hambleton, executive sponsor of the Research Value Imperative. Since its formation late last year, the center has established a team of experts, developed standardized policies/procedures, implemented new software system to support IRB submissions, and formed the new IRB committees. In addition, the center is now overseeing administrative management of more than 400 existing studies from across the system and collaborating with the designated Institutional Officials (IO) at each ministry. For more information or if you have an interest in exploring clinical research opportunities, please contact Vicki Slone, executive director of the center, or your local ministry IO, Dr. Craig Rhyne.

Contest Corner Each week until ‘Go-Live’ we will ask a question con-cerning the implementation of MEDITECH EHR. The first person to email Whitney Bryant at [email protected] with the CORRECT answer will win a prize. Make sure you read all the information in The Huddle each week. It will help to answer the questions correctly. This week’s question is simple: When does MEDITECH staff training begin?

The Schwartz Center Rounds®

In April, Covenant started offering a regular forum for its employees and physicians to openly and honestly discuss the most challenging emotional and social issues they face in caring for patients and families. Schwartz Center Rounds is a program of the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Health-care, a national nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the relationship between patients and caregivers. Unlike traditional medical rounds, the focus is on the human dimension of healthcare. Caregivers share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings on a range of topics drawn from actual patient cases. We invite you to attend Covenant’s next Schwartz Center Rounds case:

About The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare (www.theschwartzcenter.org) reflects the vision of Ken Schwartz, a Boston healthcare attorney who died of lung cancer at the age of 40 and found that what mattered to him most as a patient was the compassionate care he received from his caregivers, which he said “made the unbearable bearable.” He established the Schwartz Center just days before his death to ensure that all patients receive compassionate care. In addition to sponsoring Schwartz Center Rounds, the Schwartz Center develops and funds other innovative pro-grams, recognizes and honors caregivers who demonstrate extraordinary compassion, and works to make compassionate care a national healthcare priority.

Currently ...When the charts are outside the room, we often take care of several patients before documenting care.

Sometimes we can’t find charts or clearly read the notes or orders. Because there is not one central, easy way to search info, we spend time searching our patient’s chart for allergies and history. Our patients are often asked the same questions several times.

MeDIteCH eHr enhancing Our Patient Care: Documentation

after sePt. 1 ...When you document at bedside, you are immediately done and content is accurate - and no waiting for chart. It’s also easy to locate and clearly read patient’s history, allergies, most current vital signs, medications and physician orders. Patient information is retained in a permanent record and can be accessed if needed from any Covenant or St. Joseph Health ministry.

Do, Document, Done...and spend more time with your patients.
