Piano Classics– Mitsuko Uchida Plays Ravel Piano Concerto in GThursday 5 February | 7.30pm

Boulez MémorialeRavel Piano Concerto in GFauré Pelléas et MélisandeHaydn Symphony No 101 ‘Clock’

Robin Ticciati ConductorMitsuko Uchida PianoAlison Mitchell Flute

Pianist Mitsuko Uchida has long been hailed for her interpretations of Mozart and Schubert. The exquisite poetry and mercurial energy of her refined playing are the ideal vehicles for Ravel’s beautiful Piano Concerto, full of jazzy wit and poignant introspection.

‘The instrumentation [in Ravel’s Piano Concerto] reminds me of Mozart piano concertos, particularly the one in A major, K488. It has subtlety and depth. And the long, never-ending line in the slow movement is very Schubertesque.’ – Mitsuko Uchida

SCO Principal Flute Alison Mitchell is the soloist in Boulez’s playful, colourful Mémoriale, and Robin Ticciati concludes his concert with Fauré’s moving Pelléas et Mélisande suite and the witty tick-tocking of Haydn’s joyful ‘Clock’ Symphony.

Gilbert Varga ConductorDaniel Müller Cello-Schott

Maybe it’s the melodies, maybe it’s the style – but there’s definitely a certain je ne sais quoi about French music. Guest conductor Gilbert Varga serves up a gourmet menu tonight. Feather-light soufflés from Franck and Ravel, pure romance from Fauré, Saint-Saëns and the wonderful cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, and to finish, Ravel’s dizzying, delirious waltz to end all waltzes. SYMPHONIES FOR SUNDAYS

St Petersburg Symphony OrchestraSunday 15 February | 3pm

Tchaikovsky Romeo & JulietSaint Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minorTchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 in B minor ‘Pathétique’

Alexander Dmitriev ConductorNatalie Clein Cello

Artistic Director Alexander Dmitriev has forged the most important artistic relationship in St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra’s history over the last four decades. He conducts what some refer to as Tchaikovsky’s farewell to life. His Symphony No. 6 ‘Pathétique’ (‘pathos in the music’) is one of the defining sounds of the romantic period and lives on as one of the composer’s most adored creations and, arguably, his greatest work.

Ever since Natalie Clein came to wide spread attention as winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year, she hasn’t stopped dazzling audiences wherever she plays. Saint Saën’s Cello Concerto is perfectly suited to her immense musicality and virtuosity as it playfully carries the listener along on a melodic and emotional rollercoaster.

‘I believe in civilisation’ said Jean Sibelius, and amidst the turmoil and uncertainty of the early 20th century, he created a final symphony of monumental grandeur and elemental strength. Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony might just be the greatest since Beethoven. What’s certain is that few composers share such a profound kinship. Guy Braunstein will dig deep into the yearning soul of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, while Donald Runnicles bookends the concert with two famous overtures by Beethoven, depicting a journey from darkness to light.
