Since the renaming of the Mt. Airy Sports Complex, Matt Veronesi and all at the New Windsor Recreation
Department have been working to com-plete the memorial for Kristi Babcock in time for Community Day this year. Babcock was a 13-year member of the Recreation Department team who was dedicated to the many causes of the department. Beloved and inspirational, Babcock was tragically killed in a gun accident at her home after the final day of New Windsor’s summer camp last year. Since Babcock’s death, the New Windsor Recreation Department has been doing all it can to keep her mem-ory alive. “When I was hired here, Kristi was already working here,” said Matt Veronesi, Director of Parks, Recreation, Buildings and Grounds for the Town of New Windsor. Veronesi announced the renaming of the Mt. Airy Sports Complex during his eulogy at her funeral almost a year ago.
“We were able to give one ray of pos-itivity on a very, very dark day,” said Veronesi, who also credits the rest of
his department and the Town Board for rededicating the park. “Halloween was one of her favorite holidays...so we changed the name of the park at the Halloween party that year,” said Veronesi, who recalls how much Babcock loved to decorate and participate in Halloween and the Rec Department’s annual party. At Community Day last year, there was a ceremony for Babcock, complete with a song dedicated to her by Tim Urban. This year, Babcock’s memorial will be complete in time for one of the town’s largest events. The centerpiece of the memorial, a 19-ton bolder, is from Babcock’s sister’s yard which will display a plaque, including Babcock’s photo and an inscription from those at the Town of New Windsor Recreation Department. “Quality Auto Body sent over a crane to move it,” said Veronesi, who is thankful for the many donations that made the memorial possible. Devitt’s Nursery will be donating the landscap-ing later this week.
Babcock Memorial to be completed by Community Day
The 19-ton bolder to be used as Babcock’s memorial came from her sister’s yard, and was transported, by crane, thanks to Quality Auto Body. Landscaping will be donated by Devitt’s Nursery.
Kristi Babcock, beloved member of the New Windsor Recreation Department, was tragically killed in a gun accident one year ago on August 16.

On August 23, the Town of New Windsor Recreation Department will host their annual Community
Day at Kristi Babcock Memorial Park (formerly, the Mount Airy Sports Complex). The day will be full of enter-tainment for all ages including music from former American Idol contestant Tim Urban. Urban is becoming a fixture at the event as this will be his fourth year performing for the Town of New Windsor. Although the event has
grown to draw about 20,000 people, it’s the small town vibe that makes Community Day a memorable and enjoyable event for Urban. In 2010, Urban became a contes-tant on the ninth season of American Idol. During his time on the show, he learned invaluable lessons about the business and met many friends, most of whom are from other seasons of the hit show. “I’m definitely thankful and very blessed to have gotten to do it,” said Urban of the American Idol experi-ence, which he credits for making
performances like the one in New Windsor possible. “After the show, you realize real life kicks back in... some people are having more success in the business than others,” he said. Urban is one of 10 kids in a musi-cally inclined family. He taught him-self to play guitar in his early teens, and by the age of 17, he began singing and performing in the Dallas area. The up-and-coming star would describe himself as “a jock who found music.” Born on the West Coast, Urban moved to a suburb of Dallas, Texas as a young

child, where he lived in an area not unlike New Windsor. “I know that I have been incredibly blessed to have a tight knit family... and it’s incredibly important to me just to have that support group...,” said the singer, who remains close with his family and is about to start a family of his own with the birth of his first daughter. “[Community Day] is all about family,” said Urban, “and it’s about spending time with people you care about, and it’s about moments of bonding with other people. It’s actually one of the cool things about doing per-formances at all. A lot of people go to these performances with close friends or family as an event, as something they do as a bonding experience, so to... facilitate that with people is very cool.” Urban is not only comfortable with a small town venue, but he says it’s a venue he enjoys. “It’s one of the things I like about New Windsor...people know each other. You actually know who your neighbors are and that can get lost really easily.” When asked about the rewarding aspects of traveling the country for his music, Urban spoke more about the people he encounters than getting to explore new places. “I’ve been really blessed because I have met a ton of really amazing peo-ple, like Matt [Veronesi],” said Urban, who usually travels to performances alone. “Matt is not just a friend, he’s like a big brother to me... and there are
a handful of people around the coun-try that have become close friends...I love getting to meet new, different peo-ple.” Urban is friends with many of the regular volunteers at the event and can be spotted helping with clean up at the end of the day. He spoke highly of his many friends in New Windsor, including the Director of Director of Parks, Recreation, Buildings & Grounds, Matt Veronesi. “I’ve actually cultivated a lot of friendships of the people who work there,” said Urban who will also perform locally in the Village of Montgomery on August 21. “I didn’t really expect it but... it’s so fun to hang out with people... I’ve never felt awkward or out of place there... that’s one of the things I really like about Community Day.” When asked about what makes Community Day an ideal event, Urban discussed the importance of bringing people together through music. Since he was young, he has shared his music with his family and brought people together through his performances. He is inspired to continue playing and bringing people together without tech-nological mediation.
“What I miss and what I see disap-pearing is people being with other peo-ple,” said Urban, who unlike many in his generation is seeking less virtual contact and more time together face-to-face. “You can miss out on some great experiences – and it will happen in New Windsor and the small town you grew up in that you were dying to get out of.” According to Veronesi, Community Day may draw even more people than last year with the addition of a pet-ting zoo and a second entertainment stage for children. He also hopes that Community Day continues to be a place where people can gather and enjoy time spent together. “We began not knowing who would show up,” said Veronesi, who will be seeing the event into its sixth year. This year, kids will enjoy shows from clowns to jugglers throughout the day at the new stage. Other attrac-tions will include a carousel, a pie eating contest, and three matches of professional wrestling thanks to Northeast Wrestling. As always, there will be craft vendors, food, and music throughout the day culminating in a large fireworks display. Parking and admission is free.
Tim Urban looks forward to seeing old friends at the sixth annual Community Day.
Urban is making his fourth appearance at New Windsor Community Day.
