But did you know there are a total of 39 books in all? Books that provide guidance, warning, advice, comfort… with themes of renewal, building character, bringing light in times of darkness, showing gratitude, repairing relationships, even repairing our world.

While we can’t cover all 39 books of the bible, each helps us face life’s challenges and gain greater meaning and understanding of

ourselves and the world around us. This year’s visiting scholars and our LT clergy will further advance us on this journey in a variety of ways, among them: CHEVRA TORAH… Shabbat morning, 9 am, explore a key question in the weekly Torah portion, starts 10/3. TED TALKS (Torah Enriched Dialogue)… Compelling monthly videos featuring our very own clergy team: Rabbi Sirkman, Rabbi Miller, Cantor Scher and Rabbi Rudin. I'm excited to do my second spin around the Jewish calendar with our LT community, and continue building relationships and exploring together what it means to be a covenantal congregation. Some highlights on the horizon include drinking coffee together in our Covenant Cafe, starting a new Ben/Bat Binah program (see page 5 for more details), growing our Chesed Corps, and collaborating on an exciting new initiative called LT Connects (stay tuned for more info!).

FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Larchmont Temple Congregants, I hope that you and your close ones had a nice summer. Is it just my imagination or does summer seem to go by faster each year? The good news is that this brings us to High Holy Days faster as well. Don’t listen to those who say that the High Holy Days are early this year; as Rabbi Sirkman will tell you, they are always just on time. Let me start by wishing you Shanah Tovah for 5776. While several changes have taken place since last May (more on that below), LT remains the same covenantal community we have come to love and I know that we all look forward to being together again. In early July, we welcomed Jane Sable-Friedman as our Executive Director. Jane was born in New York and moved to Israel as a young child with her family. She was raised on Kibbutz Cabri in the Western Galilee. Jane graduated from Bar Ilan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and from the Haifa University with a Master’s Degree in Cultural Geography. While in Israel, Jane was involved in Kibbutz Management and Culture Administration. She worked together with one of the most influential Israeli Artistic Directors. Jane returned to the USA in 2004 and became the Executive Director at Temple Adat Shalom in Poway, CA and in 2010 became the Executive Director of Temple Beth El, Jewish Community Center in Aptos, CA. Jane received her FTA (Fellow in Temple Administration) from NATA (National Association of Temple Administrators) and serves as a Vice President on their Board. Jane is married to Doron and together they have three sons: Tal, Gal and Adam. Jane is excited to join Larchmont Temple as the Executive Director and can be reached by calling the Temple office or through her email at jsfriedman@larchmonttemple.org. We are delighted to have Jane in her new role. She has already made a number of important changes to LT’s operations and procedures. We look forward to her continued contributions as LT evolves and grows. This summer, we also welcomed Rabbi Eve Rubin as Director of Education, Youth and Families. Prior to joining the LT team, Rabbi Rudin served as the Director of the Congregational School at Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City, the Director of Camp Excellence and Advancement at the Foundation for Jewish Camp, and served as the Director of NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth) and the URJ Kutz Camp for Reform Jewish teens for the URJ (Union for Reform Judaism). A product of the Reform Jewish movement, Eve graduated with a BA in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University and was awarded a Wexner Graduate Fellowship during her rabbinic studies at HUC-JIR where she was ordained in May 2000. Her undergraduate and graduate thesis work focused upon youth movements and camping, and she has spoken and presented at numerous conferences on experiential Jewish education, camping, faith development and youth mentorship. Rabbi Rudin is married to Rabbi Elliott Kleinman and, together, they have three children: Emma, Avi and Shira. Eve has had a busy summer, meeting Religious School families and working with teachers and clergy to bring exciting changes to the Religious School curriculum. You will hear a lot more from Eve over the coming months as she continues to develop and implement new programs and improvements. Ben Pagliaro has joined the team as Music and T’Fillah Coordinator. Ben is excited to join the LT full-time staff and we are happy to have him. Prior to coming to Larchmont, Ben spent two years working as the Song Leader for Congregation Beth Emeth and during this time spent a year as the Music Teacher for Albert Einstein Academy in Wilmington, Delaware. He completed his Bachelor’s in Music Theory at the University of Delaware, and his student life was enriched by leading services through the University's Hillel and serving as president of the Reform Jewish Student Organization on campus (Kesher). His work in the Jewish professional world began after growing up at Eisner Camp. As staff, he spent three summers Songleading for a variety of age-groups K-11. He had the pleasure of meeting and working with Dan Nichols, Alan Goodis, and Noam Katz during this time. He also attended Hava Nashira Songleader Institute in 2012 and 2014. In the Summer of 2014, he served as the camp's music specialist; bringing camper bands together and managing Eisner's recording studio. Ben is already working with Rabbi Rudin and Cantor Scher on HHD activities and beyond. Ben can be reached by calling the Temple office or through his email at bpagliaro@larchmonttemple.org. We also took advantage of the summer to redesign and rebuild the Willow Avenue Lobby. We now have a more welcoming lobby, as well as the Covenant Café as an informal get-together area for students, parents and visitors in general. Stop by and take a look. Our clergy and staff will be announcing many new programs for 5776. Look for announcements in our weekly emails as well as in our monthly newsletters.

Brotherhood Breakfast JON BIRGER: Date-Onomics Sunday, September 20, 10:00 am Garden Room It isn’t that he’s just not that into you—it’s that there are too many more of you than there are of him. Using a combination of demographics, sociology and game theory, financial journalist and Fortune magazine contributor Jon Birger explains America’s curiously lopsided dating and marriage market—and what every single, college-educated, heterosexual woman needs to know. (It's also what every well-meaning Jewish parent needs to know before haranguing their daughter or granddaughter about why they're still single.) Call it the man deficit. The shortage of college-educated men is not just a big-city phenomenon frustrating women in New York and L.A. Among young college grads, there are four women for every three men nationwide, except in those pockets like Silicon Valley where the economy is driven by a primarily male job market. Birger will explain how this unequal ratio results in declining marriage rates as well as the rise of the college and post-college hookup culture. He will also explore the origins of the college gender gap—a combination of the pill, Title IX, and developmental differences between boys and girls. Finally, he will discuss how a different kind of man deficit is driving the "Shidduch Crisis" — the marriage crisis now afflicting Ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Larchmont Temple is pleased to welcome renowned scholar and author, James Kugel who offers an insider’s look at the work of today’s biblical scholars and ancient interpreters of the text. Is the Bible what modern biblical scholars suggest--

• The product of countless anonymous authors and editors through the ages • To be understood in its historical context speaking only to the people of the time • A human composition, flawed and filled with inconsistencies, contradictions and

“The question my book sought to raise was: Hasn’t the acceptance of modern scholarship profoundly undermined the traditional teachings and role of the Bible? And the answer – Yes, of course it has. “I consider the Torah as the first volume of a multivolume work about serving God… Even if someone could point to contradictions within the Torah, or unnecessary repetitions, or signs of later editing—none of this has any bearing on the Torah’s divine origin: after all, who makes up the rules of what a divine text can or cannot consist of?... I believe that God does speak to man; this is the whole principle of prophecy, and without it Judaism cannot be said to exist.” Prof. Kugel was the Starr Professor at Harvard for over 20 years, his course was regularly one of the two most popular at Harvard, enrolling more than 900 students. He is currently Director of the Institute for the History of the Jewish Bible at Bar Ilan University in Israel. He has authored over a dozen books. Torah for Today Fall Session –Tuesday, October 13 (meets weekly thru Nov. 17) Using the book of Genesis as our core text, we’ll investigate different ways of reading and interpreting our ancient sources. We’ll learn how generations of commentators brought the text to life, and explore the wisdom and relevance that Torah continues to bring – to our relationships, families, struggles, journeys, and ongoing search for connection and meaning.

From Jane Sable-Friedman I am excited to join the Larchmont Temple staff as your new Executive Director. I was asked many times how did I actually become a synagogue director? As you already know from Harri’s introduction, I lived many years on a Kibbutz in Israel and was involved in Kibbutz management as well as Theater management. You might not realize how similar in many ways synagogue life is to both the kibbutz and the theater. The Kibbutz and synagogue are communities that involve members of all ages engaged in Jewish life. My work on the Kibbutz involved working with volunteers on various committees, dealing with Kibbutz finances, main-tenance, holidays and life cycle events, all which are part of synagogue life. I also see many similarities working with the Theater Director and other theater professionals to my work with our Clergy and Senior Staff at the Temple. My passion in all those careers was, and still remains, the people, relationships and community building. I look forward to meeting many of you over the next few weeks and wish you all, L’shanah Tova U’metukah, a very good & sweet new year,

Midnight Run on September 19, 4 pm/8:30 pm Midnight Run is a consortium of synagogues, churches and schools that make lunches that we bring in a caravan to NYC to distribute to the homeless in pre-determined spots. We meet at 4 PM at Larchmont Avenue Church to sort clothes and toiletries and return to the church at 8:30 PM for the run. Children 12 and older can go on the run with their parents.
