a message from your exalted ruler by Stacey Stuart

i was fortunate to attend the Quarterly Meeting in Grand Junction. It is always such a pleasant and educational experience.

Our Lodge hosted The Mountain District hospitality room. As always our team goes over and above to host the best food out of all of the rooms. A big Thanks to George and Crew for making it a success again. There was great attendance from our Lodge and the consensus was that all of the sessions attended were well presented and very informative.

As the holidays are upon us, I just want to remind everyone that we will only have one meeting in December on the 12th. There will be no meeting on December 26th. We will have both of our scheduled meetings in January on the 9th and the 23rd.

I am looking forward to the tree decorating party and the New Year’s Eve celebration, two of my favorite events at the Lodge. Please see the sign up sheets in the Lodge.

I hope that in this new year we as a Lodge can embrace positivity, wellness, cohesion, and the feeling of good will to members and guests alike. I am always available to discuss Lodge issues and look forward to your input and feedback.

Wishing all a happy and healthy new year!

Veterans Committee Report — improvements have taken place at the fishing venue.

There is a new paved bus unloading pad allowing multiple buses to unload passengers simultaneously. A new walkway out to the pond will give wheelchairs better, safer access to the fishing hole. Ground on both sides of the new walkway was leveled and sod installed, thanks to Jay Parker hauling multiple loads of topsoil. To store fishing tackle and related equipment, Alec, Mindy and the Parker clan have begun building a Bait Shop adjacent to the walkway.

Our thanks go out to Casey Concrete for donating the concrete. Thanks also to David Brown and crew for the excellent pouring and finishing of all things concrete. To the entire Parker family for helping to make the fishing and archery venues at the, “Ranch”, a special place for Veterans to enjoy fishing, food and fellowship.

A thank you also goes out to Tom Skutely, president of the Roaring Fork Valley Fly fishing Club, and some of the members for their volunte er efforts last year. Ten to twelve volunteers came out each day with rods and fly set-ups and taught the Veterans to fly fish. Tom and his group have generously volunteered to help again this year.

Veterans begin arriving Friday, March 29th, continuing through Saturday, March 30th. Sporting events begin on Monday, April 1st, through Thursday, April 4th. Competition and closing day is Friday, April 5th and all depart Saturday, April 6, 2019.

Our Annual Toy Drive for the Shining Stars Foundation is now underway. Please drop off unwrapped gifts for chil-dren and leave them in the Toy Cottage located in the entryway. You may donate toys, art supplies or craft projects, puzzles, dolls. All donations are appreciated.

Arlene The Elf would be happy to assist you!

meaningful acts of Appreciation to Celebrate the Holidays of 2018-2019

As the Lodge Manager, I would like to recognize and appreciate the enormous contributions the individuals have given in their roles on the Board of Directors, Officers, Trustees, our Secretary, Committee Chairs, Newsletter Editor, Website coordinator and the volunteers by the members.

It is through these folks that we have successfully engaged in our efforts to provide value and quality to our community. It takes a village!

The Board of Directors executes the mission and vision of the Elks Lodge and smoothly runs the organization. I would like to personally say THANK YOU!

I would also like to extend my

appreciation for the excellent job of all the employees of the Lodge. Thanks to your leadership and dedication combined, we have a solid team. It is pleasure to work with every one of you.

as a friendly reminder… It is your Lodge!

Your Lodge…Most of you don’t realize that even the newest member has the same say in this Lodge as the oldest member. We run this Lodge as a voting democracy. If you want to change something, the Lodge meetings and Board meetings are the place to do it. NOT AT THE BAR, HEARSAY CAN DESTROY A LODGE’S MORALE. If you can’t bring it to a meeting or don’t want to be noticed then bring it to an officer, but be ready to back it up, stand

up for your Lodge and make it YOUR home away from home! The Lodge is a place for enjoyment and every member is responsible to keep the atmosphere light and welcoming.

Tipping EtiquetteTaking care of your bartenders and

kitchen staff is good karma…it is the fact of life. Tipping is a way of showing your appreciation for your bartender/kitchen staff. As I have stated before we have a great crew of employees. Bartenders make a majority of their income through tips and without tips it will be hard to retain our crew. It is important to remember our affordable pricing for food and beverages is a member benefit. Please be mindful of this when you are visiting our Lodge! Thank you!!!

HaPPy HOLIDayS TO yOu aLL!

The Drug Awareness Committee hosted their first event at the lodge on October 20th. It was a remarkable success with a panel of experts for the adults and activities for the kids. We had about 70 people attend. The panel of experts for the parents was a particular success. The panelist was varied, such as: Tom Kurt a medical toxicologist, Joe DiSalvo and Chip Seamans with law enforcement, Risa Turetsky with Pitkin County Health and Human Services spoke on vaping, Janelle Bauer with Youth Recovery Cen-ter at Valley View Hospital works with

kids in medical need, Nate with Youth Zone works with kids in the legal system, Angela and Brandon Marion with Drug Free World, and Native Roots. I learned so much about vaping and edibles. It was a very interesting experience.

We had marijuana and alcohol goggles that simulated the effects of varying levels of intoxication and using pot. I think the kids had a wonderful time, especially when they turned the tables on the police officers and the officers use the goggles!

We presented three awards at the meet-ing for the poster and essay contests. The

winners were: Genevieve Kertz 1st place, Poster Contest in 5th grade, Jude Hansen – 1st place, Essay Contest in 8th grade, and Lillian Huggard – 2nd place, Poster Contest in 8th grade. They all did an excellent job and we look forward to next year’s contests.

I would like to thank all of the volun-teers for their time and effort. Because of them the event was a success and we were able to support the youth and parents in our community. You are the best!
