I want to thank our Board of Directors and all of our members for making my term as President of the Academy the most gratifying two years of my educational career. It has been an honor to be president of this prestigious organization and an experience I will never forget.

It was wonderful to see so many of our colleagues sharing their experiences with each other and having the opportunity to listen to MaryEllen Elia, our new Commissioner of the State Education Department at our last dinner.

When I became President of the Academy I wanted to build on the legacy of past presidents, see our membership grow and ensure that our dinner meetings engaged our guests with great speakers and conversations around the most current issues in education. The discussions at our dinners have been both professional and informative. This is a testament to all of you. It is your knowledge and your commitment to what you do as educators that helps enlighten all of us.

I want to thank Chancellor Carmen Fariña, former Chancellor Dr. Rudy Crew, last year’s medalist State Senator and former chair of the State Senate Education Committee John Flanagan, the Mayor of the City of Newark Ras J. Baraka, State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia for being our guest speakers over the last two years.

On Tuesday May 3, 2016 we are having our Medalist Dinner and this year’s medalist is City Council Member Daniel Dromm, Chair of the New York City Council Education Committee.

As City Council Member, Daniel Dromm is an advocate for education; Daniel Dromm is currently the Chair of the New York City Council Committee on Education. He has been a constant voice for increasing the quality of education in New York City.

The New York Academy Medalist Award is the highest award bestowed by the Academy on an individual who has demonstrated beneficial impact and commitment to improving our public education system. The award was established in 1935 by NYAPE.

Congratulations to our next President, Marisa Bolognino, President-Elect Giovanna Delucchi, and Executive Director Robert Ciulla. I know that they will represent the Academy well.

There is nobody in attendance tonight that would be here without the support and love of those that came before us. Only by acknowledging the success and sacrifice made by those who came before us can we truly succeed.

Respectfully, Louis Pavone President New York Academy of Public Education
