Letter from the President Dear NJ-NY ACRAO Colleagues,   I want to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year. I hope 2015 finds you happy, healthy and ready for a new year.  I’d like to personally invite each of you to the Spring 2015 NJ-NY ACRAO Conference. The Executive Board, Steering and Conference committee members have been working hard to present an informative, motivational and educational conference for you. We are dedicated to provide you with insight and real world solutions to some of the challenges you may be faced with.  If this is not your first time attending at NJ-NY ACRAO conference then welcome back and I hope you will establish new contacts and continue to expand your network. Please help first-time attendees to meet others and in general make people feel at home here.  Remember that breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks are included! Access for Low Socio Economic Status Urban Students This session will begin with an outline of the scope of low SES urban students and factors which affect their predisposition to participate in higher education at different levels. Specific references will be made to social capital, Habitus and the choice model for such students. Results of studies on low SES urban students - as defined by race/ethnicity, will provide an opportunity for discussion on how an institution can successfully position outreach and marketing efforts. An overview of student perceptions in regard to cost-benefit will lead to dialogue on how the practitioner can develop recruitment and financial aid strategies. Luke D. Shaping Higher Education Policy and Reforming Enrollment Praxis What impact does the reauthorization of Higher Education Act (HEA) have on Admissions and Enrollment Management? Are Equity and Excellence two sides of the same coin? The 114th Congress is likely to consider a 10th reauthorization of the (HEA), which governs federal student aid including all federal student loans and grants. This workshop shall explore many of the stakeholders’ objectives and mission critical reforms from segments of Higher Education Institutions; (Public and Private, For-Profit and Distance Learning) to tease out connections to trends in Admissions and Enrollment Management initiatives. Just when you thought you’d seen it all in college admission evaluations, now colleges and universities are using creative and alternative techniques such as video submission and psychological assessments to measure a student’s potential success. Should we be stepping away from the traditional quantitative measurements? Are student test scores directly correlated to collegiate academic success? This interactive session will provide an insightful look at current trends in college and university admission evaluations as well as provide an opportunity to discuss how the changes to the SAT and the test-optional trend could impact admissions and scholarships. Veteran Services – A Recipe for Success The Office of Veteran and Military Programs and Service’s goal is to ensures that veteran and military students are fully integrated into campus life and are able to take full advantage of the broad range of intellectual and cultural activities offered by Rutgers while having veteran and military students share their diverse experiences with the university community. As the result of Rutgers extraordinary commitment to its veterans, the VA has designated Rutgers as a VetSuccess On Campus University and assigned a fulltime VA employees to work out of Rutgers Veterans House. Early Audit: A New take on a traditional process How to implement an Early Degree Audit system and automate the graduation process. We will discuss methods to improve communications with students, have a paperless process to apply, and an early warning system for pending graduation requirements. An audit process which assesses students’ degree requirements a full semester prior to graduation is currently being piloted at Hunter College for the Spring and Summer 2015 graduating class. This process is totally paperless and done electronically, with all approvals (both student and faculty) being verified through the Hobson CRM product, Retain. Effective management of the Registrar’s Office: Unlocking the wisdom of our collective experience. This presentation provides an overview of key findings from the national College Registrar Training and Technology Survey. Conference attendees are invited to take a broad view of their profession as they trace the career paths of college registrars working in the U.S. and examine their working conditions. Registrars and those who work alongside them will benefit from the insight they gain into workplace dynamics while learning effective strategies for optimizing the use of personnel and technology in their own offices. Document Imaging - Some Do’s and Some Don’ts’s This session will provide some lessons learned from one university's experience with imaging inactive records. Topics will include: creating and maintaining records that make imaging easier; how to prepare documents and files for imaging; remediation of records before imaging; linking documents and archiving records after imaging. This session is especially helpful to those who are new to the profession. The objectives of the Association are:

To perpetuate, encourage, and expand the professional educational development of

problems; to advance professional competence; and to promote mutual helpfulness and
