INTRODUCTION

HISTORY

Century School of Languages (CSL) wasfounded in San Jose, California in 1977. In2014,TheNewYorkFilmAcademypurchasedCSLandopenedbranchcampusesatallNewYork Film Academy locations. CSL wasrenamed The ESL School at NYFA (ESN) in2016.

MISSIONSTATEMENT

TheESLSchoolatNYFA(ESN)wasfoundedto serve the needs of adults whose firstlanguage isnotEnglish. ESNprovideshigh-quality language instruction in a friendlysetting to help international studentsimprove their English language abilities,focusing on academic purposes, and alsotaking into consideration students’ careeradvancement, as well as everyday socialandpracticalpurposes.

Tothisend,wearecommittedto:• Hiring and retaining qualified ESL

teachingprofessionals.• Setting high standards of achievement

forstudentsandinstructors• Providingintensiveandrigoroustraining

UnitedStateCitizenship and Immigration Services,a Bureau of the Department of HomelandSecurity (formerly the United StatesDepartment of Justice, Immigration andNaturalization)approves this institution forattendancebynon-immigrantstudents.

CODEOFCONDUCT1. Under no circumstances are drugs

oralcoholallowedonthepremisesof The ESL School at NYFA (ESN).Anyone found to possess alcoholor any illegal substances will besubject to expulsion from The ESLSchoolatNYFA.Anystudentfoundassociating with a student inpossession of alcohol or illegalsubstancesissubjecttosuspensionfrom the School, and will meetwith the Director to determine ifthestudentwillbeexpelled.

2. AnyESNstudentwhoisoncampus

while under the influence ofalcohol or drugs (includingmedicinal marijuana) will besubject to suspension and/orexpulsionfromtheSchool.

3. Smokingis prohibited on The ESL

School atNYFAproperty,with theexception ofdesignatedoutdoorsmokingareas.Thisincludesallelectronic/vaporcigarettes. Per New YorkStateCodes,thosewhoviolatetheban onsmokingin any workplacearesubjecttofines.

4. Studentsmust remainquiet in the

hallways and general areassurrounding the School. Studentsmaynot,underanycircumstances,enter any of the neighboringoffices or attempt to solicit themforemployment.

5. Guns, knives, weapons, or

explosives of any kind (regardlessof license)areneverpermittedon

the property of The ESL School atNYFA. Any student found inviolation of this will be subject toexpulsion.

6. Students must be dressed in

appropriateattireatalltimes.7. Thestudenthasreceivedandread

the student handbook and mustadheretoallruleswhileoncampusand at any School-sponsoredevents.

8. Slander, threatening remarks,

sexual harassment, racist or sexistcomments,threatsofviolenceandany physical violence to any ESNinstructor,staffmemberorstudentwill not be tolerated. Any studentwho fails to comply with this rulewill be subject to suspension orexpulsion.

9. While we embrace each student’s

righttofreespeechandexpression,any form of discrimination basedon age, race, religion, or sexualpreference toward any ESNinstructor,staffmemberorstudentwill not be tolerated. Any studentwho fails to comply with this rulewill be subject to suspension andexpulsion.

10. Students are strictly forbidden to

tap Ethernet lines of ESN oradjoining businesses for theirpersonal computers. Our networkholds confidential informationandtappingintoitposesasecurityriskto ESN. Any student who fails to

comply with this rule will besubject to suspension andexpulsion.

11. Students found misusing orvandalizingpropertyownedbyTheESL School at NYFA, or any of itsneighbors are subject to finesand/orimmediatesuspension.

12. TheESLSchoolatNYFAexpectsall

faculty, staff and students toconduct themselves in aconsideratemanner.Studentswhodisrupt classes may facedisciplinaryactions.Behavinginanaggressive, harassing, orthreatening manner to otherstudents, faculty or staff can alsoresult in suspension or expulsion.This includes unauthorized use ofcellphonesand/orotherelectronicdevicesduringclasshours.

13. Asmanyclassesrequireworkingin

close proximity to both yourinstructors and fellow classmates,all students are required tomaintain healthy and diligentpersonalhygiene.Regularbathing,wearing deodorant, and frequentlaunderingofclothesarenecessaryto ensure a healthy andcomfortable learningenvironment.Repeatedcomplaintsandwarningsabout hygiene may warrant adisciplinaryhearing.

14. Students are prohibited from

recording audio or video class

lectures without writtenpermission from the Director ofESN.

15. Any student who has been

expelled for Code of Conductviolationswill forfeit their right toThe ESL School at NYFA RefundPolicy.

16. TheESLSchoolatNYFAexpectsall

students to be responsibleindividuals who insist on highstandards of honesty, personalconduct and creative integrity. Allincidences of plagiarism, cheating,deliberate hindrance in otherstudents’workandother formsofdishonesty and misconduct areconsidered serious offenses andwill be subject to a DisciplinaryReviewHearingatwhichpenaltieswillbeimposed.

17. Studentswhofailtoabidebythese

ruleswillbe subject to suspensionand/or expulsion from The ESLSchoolatNYFA.

18. Illegal downloading - via torrents

or other file sharing sites - is notpermitted on ESN Computers orESN's Networks. Anyone caughtdoing this will be subject toimmediate disciplinary action byThe ESL School atNYFA. Furthermore, anyonecaught downloading illegalmaterial may be subject to legalaction under United States law.

FACILITIESANDSTUDENTSERVICESTheESLSchoolatNYFA(ESN)hasfacilities,equipment,andsupplies that support theachievement of our educational andservice goals; are adequate in number,condition and availability; and areaccessible to students, faculty andadministrators.

STUDENTAREAS

The New York campus offers acomfortable student lounge withcomputers,printerandstudyarealocatedonthe4thfloorat17BatteryPlace.Thereis an additional student lounge andlunchroomon the 5th floor at 17Battery.PlacewherestudentshaveaccesstoWIFIandcomfortableseating.

TECHNOLOGY&WIFI

Students,faculty,andstaffhaveaccesstofreeWi-Fiforacademicandadministrativeneeds.Eachclassroom isequippedwithaBlu-ray player and TV. Computer cablesareavailableforfacultyandstafftoenableconnectingapersonallaptop.

The Education Director’s Office hasresourcematerials for instructors to refertoand takehome,asneeded, topreparefor class use. The resources are updatedeveryquartertoensurethereismorethanenoughforeachinstructortouse.

HOUSING

The ESL School at NYFA offers twoaccommodationsinNewYorkCitythroughNew York Film Academy. Housing can bebooked directly through the New YorkFilm Academy’s housing coordinator. Alimited number of singles, doubles andtriples are offered and bed spaces aresubjecttoavailability.

ELECTIVES-EXTRACURRICULUM

OptionalelectiveclassesenrichtraditionalESL curricula, allowing students to applytheir developing English comprehension,pronunciation, and reading skills as theywatch films, read scripts and act in shortfilms.The optional elective classes areseparate class hours from the requiredcoursesintheintensiveEnglishprogram.

TUITION:

The tuition for one quarter (12weeks) is$3700.Allnewstudentspaytuitionatthetimeof registration.Current studentspaytuition14daysbeforethestartofthenextquarter.The tuitionduedate isposted intheBursar’soffice.

APPLICATIONFEE

In order for a student’s application to beprocessed,heor shemust includeanon-refundable $100 application fee with hisor her completed application form. Theapplication fee is waived for returningstudents.

SEVISI-901FEE

TheSEVIS I-901 feeof$200mustbepaiddirectly to the SEVP administrator forthosewithaninitialformI-20,applyingfora student F-1 visa. Please log on towww.fmjfee.comfordetails.

TEXTBOOKS

Core textbooks for the courses areprovidedbyESNandthecostisincludedinthetuition.

BADGEFEE

Students must have an ESN student IDbadge to enter the ESNbuilding. Youwillreceive your ID badge the first week ofschool.IfyouloseyourIDbadge,itis$25forareplacement.

EXPRESSMAILINGFEE

Prospective students can pick up theiracceptance package either in person orthrougharelativeorfriendwhoappliesontheir behalf. Unless otherwise indicated,all application packages are mailedthrough the United States Postal Service(USPS). If a studentwishes tohavehisorher acceptance packages express-mailed,theycanpurchasetheshippingbygoingtohttps://study.eshipglobal.com and followingtheinstructionbelow:

MEDICAL/HEALTHINSURANCE

All F-1 students are required to purchaseorshowproofofmedicalinsurancebythefirst week of classes. Students canpurchase insurance either from theirhomecountries,or fromTravel InsuranceServices(TSI).FormoreinformationaboutTSIandtheservicestheyoffer,pleasevisitwww.travelinsure.com/su/33029 or call800-937-1387 for a quote or to enrollonline.

FINANCIALAID

The ESL School at NYFA does notparticipate in federal and state financialaidprogramsanddoesnotcurrentlyofferfinancial aid assistance to students. If astudent has received Federal StudentFinancialAidFunds,thestudentisentitledto a refund of monies not paid fromFederal Student Financial Aid ProgramFunds. The institution’srefundpolicywillbeappliedtotheportionoftuitionpaidbythestudent.

Any student that has obtained a loan topay for an educational programwill havetheresponsibilitytorepaythefullamountof the loanplus interest, less theamountofanyrefund.

Studentswhoseentiretuitionandfeesarepaidbya thirdpartyorganizationarenotentitled to a refund for the tuition andfees. The school will refundmoney, suchasapplication fees, collected froma thirdpartyonthestudent'sbehalf.Iftheschoolcancels or discontinues a course oreducationalprogram,theschoolwillmakeafullrefundofallcharges.Refundswillbepaid within 30 days of cancellation orwithdrawal.

A student has the right to cancel his/herenrollment agreement and obtainarefund of charges paid throughattendanceatthefirstclasssessionortheseventhdayafterenrollment,whicheverislater. TUITIONPAYMENTS,SCHEDULEADJUSTMENTS,ANDREFUNDS

Tuition schedules are posted at the frontdesk.Tuitionnotpaidbytheduedatewillbechargeda$25latefee.

REFUNDPOLICY:

• Theapplicationfeeisnon-refundable.• There are NO refunds for missed

classes.Studentismarkedabsent.• ThereareNOmake-uplessons.• If the tuition was paid through an

agent, the appropriate refundamountwillbeissuedtotheagent.

TheESLSchoolatNYFAwillrefund100%of the amount paid for institutionalcharges, less the registration fee of$100.00 if noticeof cancellation ismadethrough attendance at the first classsession, or the seventh class day afterenrollment,whicheverislater.

After the 100% refund period describedabove, a student may withdraw from aprogramafter instructionhas startedandreceive a pro rata refund (less the non-refundableregistrationfeeof$100.00andcost of text books and supplies) for theunused portion of the tuition and otherrefundable charges, if the student hascompleted4weeksorlessofthatprogramlevel. The amount of the refund iscalculatedbasedonthestudent’slastdayofattendance.

Refunds are disbursed within 30 days ofthe official withdrawal from the school.The withdrawal is dated on the day thatthe student gave written notice to theschool.

The ESL School at NYFA shall refund anycredit balance on the student’s accountwithin 30 days after the date of thestudent’s completion of, or withdrawalfrom, the educational program in whichthestudentwasenrolled.

STUDENTTUITIONREIMBURSEMENTFUND(STRF)

What is the Tuition ReimbursementFund?

All schools must have a tuition refundpolicy for each program included in thestudent enrollment agreement. Read andunderstand the school’s policy regardingtuitionrefundandcancellationbeforeyousign the enrollment agreement. If youdonotunderstandit,orareconfused,bytheschool’s explanation get help before yousign.Youmayask forassistance fromtheDepartmentattheaddressprovided.

The Tuition Reimbursement Fund isdesigned to protect the financial interestof students attending proprietary Englishas a second language schools. If a schoolcloses while you are in attendance, priorto the completion of your educationalprogram, then you may be eligible for arefund of all tuition expenses that youhavepaid. If youdropoutof schoolpriorto completion and you file a complaintagainst the school with the StateEducation Department, you may beeligible to receive a tuition refund if theState Education Department is able toprovide factual support that yourcomplaint is valid and determines thattherewasaviolationofEducationLaworCommissioner’sRegulationsasspecifiedinSection 126.10(j) of the Commissioner’s

Regulations. To file a claim to theTuitionReimbursementFund,youmustfirstfileacomplaint with the State EducationDepartment at the addressprovided. Thestaff of the State Education Departmentwill assist you in the preparation of atuition reimbursement form (a sample ofthisformshouldhavebeenprovidedoyouuponenrollment).

Students are not required tosubmit documentation regarding theirEnglishproficiency,butmustcompleteanEnglish placement test upon admission,tobeplacedintheappropriateLevel.

ProofofHighSchoolCompletion

Tofulfillthisrequirement,applicantsmustsubmitONEofthefollowingdocuments:

1. Copy of a high school academictranscript

2. Copyofhighschooldiploma3. Copy of state-issued high school

equivalencycertificate4. Copy of Associate’s degree or

collegetranscriptfromaregionallyor nationally accredited college oruniversity (for students who havepartialor completeundergraduatecoursework.)

5. Home school transcript accreditedbythestate

TheESLSchoolatNYFAgenerallydoesnotconsider prior experiential learning as asubstitute for the transcript requirementsdescribed above. ESN also does notcurrently accept Ability-to-Benefit (ATB)tests as a fulfillment of high schoolcompletion.All transcripts not written in English mustbe accompanied by a certified Englishtranslation.

INTERNATIONALSTUDENTS

LEVELPLACEMENTThe placement exam score, based on theCambridge Michigan Language Assessments(CaMLA), is used to determine a student’sproficiency level,which in turndeterminesastudent’s classes. A student must take fourhoursof class per day: one and ahalf hourseach for Grammar&Writing and Reading&Vocabulary; and one hour for Listening andSpeaking.

If a student wishes to contest his/her levelplacement, the Education Director willconsider the request for a change. ATTENDANCEPOLICYStudents are required to attend 85% oftotalprogramhours(240)tobeconsideredingood standing. Studentswhoaccrue10hoursofabsencesorfallbelow90%oftotalprogramhourswillbeplacedonmonitoredstatus and receive an initial warning letterfromtheschool.

ATTENDANCEPROBATION

Students who accrue 36 hours of absenceor fall below 85% of total program hourswillbeplacedonProbationandwillreceivealetterfromtheschoolstatingtheyareonProbationand the termsof saidProbation.Students remain on Probation for theremainder of the quarter. During theProbationary status, students cannot miss,or be late to any class. Any absences orlateness could result in expulsion from theESLSchoolatNYFA.

LEAVEOFABSENCE

Students who wish to take a leave ofabsence must consult Director of the ESLSchoolatNYFANY.Toqualify fora leaveofabsence, you must be in good academicstandingandbemakingsatisfactoryprogresstowards the completion of your certificateprogram.

FULL-TIMEENROLLMENT

In accordance to USCIS rules andregulations,studentsenrolledatESNonanF-1 Visa must take 20 hours of class perweek each quarter. You must eitherprogress to academic study or leave theUnited States when you complete yourprogram.The ESL School at NYFA has a minimumattendance(85%ofthetotalprogramhoursper quarter) and academic performance(75%orhigherfinalgradeforallcoursesperlevel)requirements.

GOODSTANDING

A student in good standing at The ESLSchoolatNYFAisonewho:

• Regularly attends class (85% of totalclasshours).

• Abidesbytheschool’scodeofconduct.• Receives a final grade of “C”/75% or

GROUNDSFORACADEMICPROBATIONANDDISMISSAL

ESNandtheNewYorkFilmAcademybelievein the freepursuit of intellectual andartisticinquiry, as well as the exchange of ideasbetween instructors and students.Controversial subjects may be exploredwithout fear of censure, retribution orreprisal,solongastheworkoccurswithinthescopeoftheESNeducationand isconsistentwith its stated Academic Freedom Policy,which will be made available to any personuponrequest.Students,faculty,andstaffarefree toexpress themselvesandexplore theirartistichorizonsastheyseefit,providedthatthey remain in compliance with state andfederal law, and so long as they cansuccessfully demonstrate that the workdiscussed/performed/completedwascreatedwith artistic intent. Pornographic depictionscreated with commercial intent or used forcommercial purposes will not be tolerated,andthecreatorsofsuchworkwillbesubjecttoexpulsion/dismissal.

Instructors are free to discuss controversialsubjects in class and screen controversialworkswithoutfearofreprisal,solongasthework serves the overall goal of the ESNcurriculumanddoesnotviolatetheESNCodeof Conduct or any institutional or campus-wide policies. Work that contains nudity,graphic sexual depictions, extreme violenceand/orexcessiveprofanitymaybeprecludedfrom a public screening at the discretion ofthe administration. Films precluded frompublic presentation will be screened inprivateforanappropriate,invitedaudience.

ACADEMICHONESTY&CREATIVEINTEGRITY

ESN expects all students to be responsibleindividuals who insist on high standards ofhonesty, personal conduct, and creativeintegrity. All incidences of plagiarism,cheating, and deliberate hindrance of otherstudents’ work are considered seriousoffensesandwill be subject toaDisciplinaryReview Hearing at which penalties will beimposed.

Academic honesty extends to all schoolprojects,productions,andexercises,bothonand off the ESN campus. Students mustmaintain a high standard of honesty indeclarations and descriptions of theseprojects to faculty, administration, and staff,as well as other agencies and vendors.Deliberate dishonesty and misconduct areconsidered serious offenses and will besubject to a Disciplinary Review Hearing atwhichpenaltieswillbeimposed.

Threatening remarks from students (verbalslander, sexual harassment, threats ofviolence, etc.) and/or any act of physicalviolence from a student toward anyinstructor, staffmember, student, orotherpersoningeneralwillnotbetolerated.Anyverbal, nonverbal, physical, or written(graphic or electronic) act that is sexual innature,severeandpervasive,andcreatesahostile environment or limits an individualtheability toparticipate inorbenefit fromany educational programs. This policyextends online to social media platformsand any form of additional cybercommunication,includingtextmessages.

Any student who violates these terms issubjecttodisciplinaryactionand/orcriminal

prosecution.Threateningremarksoranyactof physical violence from faculty, staff, oradministrative employee towards any otherinstructor, staff member, administrator,student, or other person in generalwill notbe tolerated. Any employee who violatesthese terms is subject to immediatetermination.

Any act of sexual assault or any otherphysical violence will immediately bereportedtotheproperlegalauthorities.Anystudent, faculty, staff, or administratorwhofalls victim to sexual harassment or assaultwill be immediately taken to the nearesthospital for medical treatment andemotional counseling. CourseDescription:This course is designed for students whoneed to revise or upgrade their grammarskills toensureaccuracyof communicationbefore proceeding with undergraduate orgraduate studies. This is a thorough andsystematic review of grammaticalstructures and their use in authenticlanguagesituations.Thecoursereviewstheessential components of essaywriting: thethesis statement, topic sentence,introduction, body paragraphs, andconclusion.Thelearnerwillalsoidentifytheobjectivesofthepreviouslydiscussedessayformats: procedural, comparison, cause-effect, and argumentative. This class willhelpstudentsexpandtheircommandofthemechanicsandrulesofEnglishgrammaratan advanced level. This course will alsodeepentheadvancedlearner’swritingskillsas they progress from essay writing toacademicresearchpapers.Emphasiswillbeplaced on applying grammatical principlesto different forms of writing and researchtopics, pre-writing, revising, editing, andpresenting. Emphasis is placed onimproving the learner’s understanding ofhigh-level academic English readingmaterials and on recycling and applyingvocabulary from the Academic Word List(AWL).Thetextsareselectedfromarangeof sources (academic journals, textbooks,books, and online articles) and focus ondiverse academic subjects (sociology, filmstudies, neuroscience, etc.). Uponsuccessful completion of this course,students will be able to demonstratefurtherimprovementinthecomprehensionofEnglishpre-collegeandcollegematerialsanddemonstrate furtherproficiency in thecomprehension and use of new academicvocabularytobeappliedinsideandoutsideof the classroom. Learners will alsocontinue to apply strategies that makereading easier such as paraphrasing andsummarizing main ideas, predictingoutcomes,drawingconclusions,andmakinginferences and analyses. Students gain speakingandfluencypracticebygivingpresentationsabout familiar topics suchas their country,culture, or a favorite activity/skill. Each

student will give six presentations to theclass. In addition, students learn morepresentationphrasesandphrasalverbsthatthey can use in various contexts, includingtheir presentation topics. Advancedpronunciationskillsarealsotaughttoaidinmore effective presentations. The goal ofthe course is to improve the learner’sfluencyandconfidencewhenspeakingtoalarger audience. By the end of the term,students will be able to give a 10 to 15-minutepresentationonafamiliartopicandanswer questions from the audience. Asaudience members, students will also beable to clearly articulate questions in apresentationsetting.

StudentsenrollinginanEnglishasasecondlanguageprogramataschoolcertifiedbytheNewYork State Education Department must receive acopy of this information regarding student rightsbefore an enrollment agreement is signed. As aconsumer protection measure, the New York StateEducation Department registers for-profit schools,whichteachEnglishasasecondlanguageandacceptnopublic funds.Theseschoolsarerequiredtomeetminimum requirements detailed in Education Lawand Commissioner’s Regulations in order to assurethatstudentsgetwhattheyarepayingfor-namely,instructioninEnglishasoutlinedbytheschool.

Student’sRighttoFileaComplaint

If a student has any legitimate complaint against aschool certified by the New York State EducationDepartment, he/she should attempt to resolve thecomplaintwiththeschooldirectly.Ifthisfails,orifastudentfeelsthathe/shewouldbepenalizedbytheschool formaking a complaint, the studentmay filethecomplaintwiththeStateEducationDepartment.

Complaints that are not able to be resolved by theschoolarerareandwillusuallynotarise.However,ifsuch a situation occurs, all attempts to resolvecomplaintswiththeschoolshouldbedocumentedinwriting. Complaintsmay be about school standards,advertising, facilities, qualifications of teaching andmanagement personnel, methods of collectingtuition and fees, etc. Schools certified by the NewYorkStateEducationDepartmentarerequiredtofiledocuments relating to all of these aspects of theschool’s operations with the State EducationDepartmentinordertobecomecertified.

ThestepsyoumusttaketofileacomplaintwiththeNewYorkStateEducationDepartmentare:

3. The investigator will attempt to resolve the complaint as quickly as possible and may

contact you with follow-up questions. You should provide all information requested asquicklyaspossible;delaymayaffecttheinvestigationofyourcomplaint.Whenappropriate,theinvestigatorwilltrytonegotiatewiththeschoolinformally.
