JS^llers ^sS^ As you know we have had a lot of recent shortages of gondolas at various points and i n many cases these involved 65 -ft. gondolas. The U. 3. Steel Corporation have told us that during 1956 when operations were curtailed ap- proximately 15% due to strike conditions, their vari- ous *t««l shipping plants were short a minimum of 6000 65 -ft gondolas. They point out combined ownership of 65 -ft. gondolas by eastern and southern carriers is approximately &SG0 and they feel at least 2600 65 -ft. gondolas should be added to eastern and southern roads ownership. In the case of our own System,tf.S. Steel urges that we acquire 600 additional 65 -ft. gondolas. Will you kindly review your gondola require- ments and shortages you have experienced and let us know what additional you feel we should acquire, giving length and other specifications of the type you recommend. \jL * ^111 appreciate a prompt reply. Referring to your l e t t e r March 20th, f i l e ll±3> quoting l e t t e r from Mr. I n g a l l s concerning gondolas:

The only point i n t h i s t e r r i t o r y where we receive orders f o r gondolas i s Windsor, wnicn are required by Chrysler ana Pord. These are f l a t bottom gondolas, usually 50 feet to 52 feet 6 inches i n length. ¥e also supply the scrap i r o n dealers with f l a t bottom gondolas, but f o r t h i s t r a f f i c they require 52 feet 6 inch cars. We do not receive requests f o r 65 foot gondolas except on very rare occasions.

Mr. G. H. I n g a l l s t Please be referred to your j o i n t

l e t t e r of March 19, with regard to shortages i n the supplying of gondola oars to our shippers.

On t h i s D i v i s i o n we only receive odd requests for 65 foot gondola cars and we have, generally speaking, been able to take eare of requirements l o c a l l y .

Regarding gondola cars generally, w© a t times do have odd cases where we are temporarily short but as a general rule we are able to take care of our requirements and have not had too much d i f f i c u l t y i n t h i s connection i n the past.
