    programs are increasing affordable broadband access and helping

    people improve heir echnological lieracy and compuer skills. Te

    Underscoring Mayor Bloombergs commimeno increasing echnology inclusion and reducing

    he digial divide, he Ciy o New York has helped

    nearly 300,000 low-income residens access heInerne and adop service since he inroducion o

    he Digial Roadmap.

    A major driver o his accomplishmen was he se ohigh-impac grans provided by he ederally undedprogram (Broadband echnology Opporuni-

    ies Program). Programs included Conneced Learn-

    ing, which provides raining, discouned broadband,echnology curricula and equipmen o 23,000 sixh

    graders and heir amilies or a oal impac o over

    50,000 residens. Te program, which surpassed isiniial goal o serving 18,000 sixh graders, hopes o

    signicanly impac he academic and proessionalrajecory o he seleced sudens by providing hem

    and heir households wih powerul digial lieracyraining a a criical age.

    In addiion, a separae program, Conneced Com-

    muniies, has expanded capaciy and inrasrucureo serve over 40,000 individuals a week via 100 new

    Alogeher, Conneced Communiies compuer re-sources ceners bene approximaely 200,000 New

    Yorkers annually.

    Finally, a hird program called Conneced Founda-

    ions, has ocused on a-risk youh in danger oailing o complee high school, and has served 4,194

    sudens o daeproviding access and digial l i-eracy raining o increase proessional opporuniies

    pos-secondary school.

    New York Ciys library sysems play a vial andever-growing role in connecing New Yorkers o he

    inormaion ha hey seek on he Inerne. Alogeh-er, he Ciys hree library sysems have increased

    he number o compuers available o he public by89% since 2002. Te Brooklyn Public Library (BPL)

    offers is members ree Inerne access and 1,111

    public use compuers, including 95 lapops addedo is invenory in 2011 using BOP unding. BPL

    also offers a 36-compuer ech Lof serving youhup o 16 years o age and compuers wih ree access

    o cosly specialy programs such as Roseta Sone,Windows Live Movie Maker and Ancesry Library

    Ediion. Te New York Public Library provides

    ree access o he Inerne, online daabases, librarycaalogs and Microsof Office applicaions rom is

    4,026 public-use compuers. In 2012, NYPL visiorslogged 3,557,162 hours o compuer use, and made

    a oal o 441,434 requess or is 1,303 lapops. TeQueens Public Library also provides Inerne access

    and 1,706 compuers or public use, and hroughBOP unding, provides one-on-one raining and

    use o Microsof Office applicaions.

    Increased Free i-Fi inPublic Spaces

    Building on ull-service access o he Inerne viahardline connecions and public deskop compu-

    ers, he increased use o mobile devices, ables andpersonal lapop compuers in New York Ciy has led

    o exponenial public demand or ree public Wi-Fi.While blankeing he ve boroughs o he Ciy wih

    public Wi-Fi is currenly cosly and complex, heCiy o New York has suppored he esablishmen

    o public-privae parnerships. Tese parnerships

    represen ens o millions o dol lars in invesmenha expand conneciviy o hundreds o housands

    a no cos o axpayers.

    Since he announcemen o he Digial Roadmap,he Ciy has implemened ree public Wi-Fi in over

    50 parks, supporing business, ourism and com-muniy needs. O hose parks, 26 locaions were

    conneced by A& and eaure unlimied Wi-Fiaccess or all users. Spurred by he experience

    o elecommunicaions needs during HurricaneSandy, A& also recenly piloed Sree Charge,

    several solar-powered mobile charging saionsha help New Yorkers mainain power, and, hus,

    conneciviy on he go and in emergency scenarios.

    Cablevision and imeWarner invesed in inra-srucure in an addiional 32 parks, and allow

    up o 30 minues o use per monh ree o chargeor non-cusomers and $0.99 per day beyond

    ha hreshold.

    Beyond he parks, he Ciy o New York has par-nered wih Google o provide ree public Wi-Fi

    in Chelsea, covering an area ha serves over100,000, including over 2,000 residens o he

    Fulon Houses public housing developmen, andspanning rom 15h Sree o 19h Sree and 8h

    Avenue o 10h Avenue.

    Free public Wi-Fi neworks are also coming o 10

    commercial disrics in all ve boroughs: in Brook-lyn along he Fulon Sree corridor, BAM Culural

    Disric, Brownsville, and Downown Brooklyn;in Manhatan in he Flairon Disric, along he

    Waer Sree Corridor and he Eas River waerron

    in Lower Manhatan, he 125h Sree corridor inHarlem and on Roosevel Island; in Queens in Long

    Island Ciy; in Saen Island in he S. George com-mercial disric; and in he Bronx on Fordham Road,

    as well as oher areas ciywide.

    Saring his all, consrucion will begin on a ree,public Wi-Fi nework in Harlem rom 110h o

    137h Srees beween Frederick Douglass Bou-levard and Madison Avenue. Te Mayor's Fund

    o Advance New York Ciy is parnering wih heDeparmen o Small Business Services and ech-

    nology vendor Sky Packes o design and plan he

    ensure ha large cable providers expand serv ice o

    all residenial areas.

    When he rs Digial Roadmap was released in2011, 60% o residenial srees had access o Veri-

    zon FiOS. As par o a conrac requiremen securedby he Deparmen o Inormaion echnology and

    elecommunicaions, oday he percenage o resi-dences wih sree access has increased o 91%, wih

    Verizon on rack o serve 100% o residences by heconclusion o 2014. Tis represens a crucial sep in

    expanding he marke and providing more opionso consumers in New York Ciy.

    Expanded CommercialFiber Optic Broadband

    Finally, as New York Ciys echnology secor growsand oher major indusries modernize, he need or

    high-speed commercial broadband access has neverbeen greaer. o speed he deploymen o ber opic

    cabling, he Ciy o New York has explored innova-ive new echnologies and leveraged conracs wih

    Inerne service providers.

    One example is he rial o micro-renching echnol-

    ogy o deploy ber conneciviy in commercialcorridors. Micro-renching is a process o insalling

    small conduis in narrow renches a sidewalk edgeso house ber opic cabling. I is aser, more efficien

    and less disrupive han radiional mehods o in-salling inrasrucure. In parnership wih Verizon,

    he Ciy approved 14 pilo locaions ha will runhrough November 2013.

    In addiion, Depuy Mayor Rober Seel announced

    he launch o he ConnecNYC Fiber Challenge, acompeiion ha provides ree ber conneciviy in-

    LITERACY

    ogy secor awareness among sudens, he Ciyhas launched Digial Ready, a echnology-driven

    program ha uses new media ools in he classroomand offers inernships and oher learning experi-

    ences wih sarups. A collaboraion beween heMayor's Office o Media and Enerainmen and he

    Deparmen o Educaion, Digial Ready launched in

    Sepember 2013 in 10 high schools, using a suden-cenered model ha inegraes digial resources ino

    lesson plans, leverages assessmen daa or insruc-ional decisions, and inroduces sudens o careers

    in echnology hrough menorships and careerdevelopmen opporuniies wih local digial compa-

    nies. In is second year, Digial Ready will expand o20 addiional schools, including middle schools.

    COMPUTER SCIENCE CURRICULUM EXPANDS

    TO MORE NYC SCHOOLS

    A he secondary level, sudens ineresed in an

    academic or proessional career in echnology have

    greaer opions han ever beore hanks o he cre-aion o wo new high schools ocused on compuer

    science learning, and he expansion o he SofwareEngineering Pilo o an addiional 19 schools. Te

    Academy or Sofware Engineering (AFSE) was hers school o open in all 2012, welcoming is inau-
