NEW FACES: On June 22, 2017 the Islanders acquired forward Jordan Eberle from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Ryan

Strome. Eberle, 27, is entering his eighth NHL season. He has totaled 382 points (165g/217a) in 507 NHL games. In his seven

previous NHL seasons, Eberle has hit the 20-goal mark five times (had 16 in 48 games during 2012-13 shortened NHL season).

Eberle is the only player on the 23-man roster that did not play for the  Islanders last season. 

BENCH BOSSES: Doug Weight was named interim head coach of the New York Islanders on January 17, 2017, and became the

19th Head Coach in Islanders history. The Islanders went 24-12-4 in 40 games under Weight. On April 12 the ‘interim’ tag was

removed. Weight promoted Greg Cronin to associate coach and named Kelly Buchberger, Luke Richardson, Scott Gomez and Fred

Brathwaite to his coaching staff over the summer. Weight, Cronin, Buchberger and Richardson will coach from the benches in-

game. Weight is one of 4 NHL coaches who will make their opening night head-coach debuts this week.

STRONG FINISH: The Islanders finished the 2016-17 on a six game winning-streak, just one point shy of a playoff spot. As of

January 19, 2017 the Islanders finished in the top five in the league in Points (52, 2nd most), Wins (24, second most), Goals (120, T-

YOUNG GUNS: There are currently three players 21 years old or younger on the Islanders 27-man roster. Mathew Barzal, 20, made

his NHL debut last season before being sent down to juniors (Seattle, WHL) after two games. Anthony Beauvillier, 20, made his NHL

debut and recorded 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists) in 66 games during his rookie season last year with NYI. Josh Ho-Sang, 21,

also made his NHL debut in 2016-17. He scored 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 21 games with up with the Islanders. Beauvillier,

who turned 20 on June 8th is the youngest player on the roster. He is 13 days younger than Barzal.

BACK-TO-BACKS: The Islanders will play 16 sets of back-to-backs this season. The home opener vs. Buffalo will be the back end

of their first set. The Islanders are 0-1-0 in front ends of back-to-backs

Doug Weight was named interim head coach of the New York Islanders on January 17, 2017, and became the 19th Head Coach in Islandershistory. On April 12 the ‘interim’ tag was removed, making him the fulltime head coach of the Islanders.  Prior to assuming the role, the Detroit, Mich. native served as Assistant Coach and Assistant GM.  Weight, a four-time NHL All-Star, was named the 12th captain in Islanders history on October 2, 2009. Originally drafted by the New YorkRangers in the second round (34th overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Weight's career included stints with the Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St.Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and Islanders. He totaled 1,033 points (278 goals, 755 assists) in 1,238 career games.Weight was inducted into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013. Upon retiring as a player on May 26, 2011, Weight was named Islanders Assistant Coach and Senior Advisor to the General Manager.

Phil Housley is in his first season behind the bench for the Sabres after being named the 18th head coach in Buffalo’s franchise history. The Hockey Hallof Famer and former Sabres defenseman is the seventh alumnus to serve as the team’s head coach. Housley joined the Sabres after helping to guide the Nashville Predators to their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2016. Named an assistantcoach on May 22, 2013, Housley was a driving force behind one of the NHL’s best defensive groups throughout his tenure. A native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Housley began his coaching career in 2004 as head coach of Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota.
