•Geographical LocationNew York is located on a large natural harbor on the Atlantic coast of the Northeastern United States. There are five states that surround New York. They are Vermont, Massachusettes, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Canada is to the north of New York.

In addition to the Atlantic Ocean, there are many bodies of water that are in or bordering New York State. The main rivers are the Husdon River, the Mohawk River and the Genesee River. The bordering bodies of water are Lake Ontario, Lake Eerie and Lake Champlain.

The capital of New York is Albany. Another major city in New York is New York City,

better known as the "Big Apple".

Principal IndustryThe principal industries in New York State are printing and publishing, industrial machinery and equipment, electronic equipment, and instruments. The convention and tourist business is also an important source of income.

New York's farms produce cattle and cows, corn and poultry, and vegetables and fruits. Other natural resources in New York are timber, water, fish and mining.

During the American Revolutionary War, New York fought against the British to gain it's independence. On July 26, 1788, New York became the 11th state to join the Union.

The Empire StateThe nickname of New York is the Empire State.

Historical Significance in NYEllis Island was the main facility for immigrants, entering the United States in the late 19th Century to the mid 20th Century. More than 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954.

The first major battle of the American Revolutionary War after independence was declared-and the largest battle of the entire war- was fought in New York at the Battle of Long Island in August of 1776.
