the last excursion' boat. captains' [that operated on the Niagara River, died yesterday at his'' home in Hollywood, Fla.
He was part of the color of a fay-. gone era. That was the prohibition [period when pilots' ol river boats had to, keep their eyes peeled for federal agents as well as the Niagara's shoals and shallows. *
As an excursion boat'skipper, "Paddy" -knew the hazards well. When i e was 10 he began; to learn
| about the Niagara aboard' his. fa-ther's.and his uncle's boats, the
t Edgewater and the Seabreeze, [ that took thousands of .river ex-[ cursioners on 5V% - mile cruises around Grand island.
His father, Frank Fix. and his uncle, Charles Fix, operated the
j excursion boats. They also-operated a dozen ferries that took pas
sengers to Grand Island and Ft. i Erie from... two.' locations.. One • landing. was at the foot m Wheele r Street in Tonawanda, The cth-ier was in the Town of Tora'a-aav da near the present Huntley SCtt

When excursioning was at' its :peak, the Fix dock at the foot of 'Amherst Street; in. Buffalo was Ijammed with excursion passen-|gers on Saturday and Sunday •ai-fternoons. The coining of prehi'hi-' tion. saw a terrific rise in tfefj PjjJ excursion business.
Stops at the Bedell House were especially popular wif'h excurskm-ers • who* were kept alert for prohibition agents. The boat a Dj was convenient for excursion* \
