Dec 18 (Special).— A bill may be Intro- •luced in the Legislature providing that hotel keep- ers shall pay a larger tax than at present for tbe privilege of selling liquor on Sunday. The object oX such a law would be to destroy humbug hotels and restaurants, and also compel botel keepers to pay a tax for their special privilege of selling liquor on Sunday. Small hotels have been established since 1896 ap- parently for the sole purpose of selling liquor. If the Raines Liquor Tax law has had any unpopu- larity it is due to this kind of alleged hotels. One of the leading members of the State Excise De- partment said to-day when asked his opinion of the above suggested amendment to tbe liquor tax law: I believe that an amendment providing a special license for hotel keepers and charging them a fee larger than that required for an ordinary saloon certificate would be a very wise step. 1 believe, also, that the proprietors of reputable hotels would favor it, as it would drive out of existence a class of so-called hotels which are not hotels in fact, but which are maintained so as to comply tech- nically with the liquor tax law and serve as an opportunity to sell liquor during the prohibited hours. An amendment of this character would not only wipe them out. but it would exact from hotel men extra taxation for extra privileges. It Is said that none of the details of the proposed legislation, such as the tax to be paid by hotels which sell liquor on Sunday, have been decided upon by those who favor the measure. PROPOSED LEGISLATION TO DO AWAT WITH

"FAKI" HOTELS.

Albany. Dec 18 (Special).— A bill may be Intro-•luced inthe Legislature providing that hotel keep-ers shall pay a larger tax than at present for tbeprivilege of selling liquor on Sunday. The objectoX such a law would be to destroy humbug hotelsand restaurants, and also compel botel keepers topay a tax for their special privilege of sellingliquor on Sunday.

Small hotels have been established since 1896 ap-parently for the sole purpose of selling liquor. Ifthe Raines Liquor Tax law has had any unpopu-larity it is due to this kind of alleged hotels. Oneof the leading members of the State Excise De-partment said to-day when asked his opinion of theabove suggested amendment to tbe liquor tax law:

Ibelieve that an amendment providing a speciallicense for hotel keepers and charging them a feelarger than that required for an ordinary salooncertificate would be a very wise step. 1 believe, also, that the proprietors of reputable hotels wouldfavor it,as it would drive out of existence a classof so-called hotels which are not hotels in fact, but which are maintained so as to comply tech-nically with the liquor tax law and serve as anopportunity to sell liquor during the prohibitedhours. An amendment of this character would notonly wipe them out. but it would exact from hotelmen extra taxation for extra privileges.ItIs said that none of the details of the proposed

legislation, such as the tax to be paid by hotelswhich sell liquor on Sunday, have been decidedupon by those who favor the measure.
