Harry A. Beach, for nearly twentyyears widely' known in the radio -musicindustries and during the past fouryears vice-president in charge of salesof the Charles Freshman Co., later theEarl Radio Corp., has just been ap-pointed manager of the radio depart-ment of the Stromberg-Carlson Tele-phone Mfg. Co., famous local radioproducer. Mr. Beach is assuming hisnew duties at once and it is expectedthat with his addition to the executiveforces here the company will be enabledto develop new territories in the signalfashion which has characterized itsmerchandising throughout the East,notably in New York and New Englandthrough the sales agency of Gross -Brennan, Inc.

Mr. Beach's first identity in the fieldof music merchandising began with hisjoining the Victor Talking MachineCo., at Camden, N. J., in 1909 as travel-ing representative in his early career.He rose to the post of assistant salesmanager of the Victor organizationduring the incumbency of the lateGeorge D. Ornstein, becoming managerof the traveling department when Mr.Ornstein resigned to enter the jobbingbusiness. During a Victor official acti-vity of eleven years he became ac-quainted nationally and won widespreadconfidence for his knowledge and abilityand an interesting reminiscence of thattime is that during Mr. Beach's man-agement of the traveling departmentHerbert A. Brennan, now vice-presidentof Gross -Brennan, Inc., was a youthfulmember of the Victor organization.

In 1921 Mr. Beach withdrew from theVictor company to become vice-presi-dent and general manager of the UnitConstruction Co., Philadelphia, then ex-tensively engaged in the manufactureof store equipment for talking machinedealers and a year or so later he wasappointed Eastern sales manager of theBrunswick - Balke - Collender Co., Chi-cago, a post which he held until hejoined the Freshman company after theadvent of radio.

Chicago, Ill., Friday.The fourth annual convention of the

National Federation of Radio Associa-tions will be held at the Statler Hotel,Cleveland, Ohio, February 10 and 11,at which distributors, retailers andothers engaged in the industry willgather for a joint discussion of theirmutual problems.

The convention will be of particularinterest to the radio dealers in thatmany of their vital problems will bediscussed by authorities on the subject.Radio wholesalers and dealers of na-

tional prominence have already declaredthat they will be in attendance at thismeeting. Among other things, policieswill be outlined for the operation ofretailers and wholesalers organizationsfor the coming year.

The board of directors of the Nation-al F jeration of Radio Associationswill r ?et in Cleveland on Sunday, Feb-ruary I, to outline plans for the comingconvention. The board will review theactivities of the past year, considercommittee reports, etc., so that every-thing will be in timely shape for themeeting.

L. Warrington Chubb, manager ofthe radio engineering department ofthe Westinghouse Electric and Manu-facturing Co. at East Pittsburgh, Pa.,has been appointed first assistant tothe vice-president in charge of engi-neering of the new Radio -Victor Corp.of America. His headquarters will bein this city.

Mr. Chubb has been manager of theWestinghouse radio department sinceits founding in 1920. Before that hewas active in development and researchwork for the company.

In 1905, Mr. Chubb entered the em-ploy of the Westinghouse company asan engineering apprentice. Up until1909 he was particularly active in thedevelopment and application of mag-netic materials. Before the organiza-tion of an isolated research depart-ment, he had charge of advanced de-velopment work as a service to allengineering departments on electro -technical problems and new develop-ments.

At the time the radio engineeringdepartment was formed in 1920, Mr.Chubb was appointed manager, and hasbeen very active in this work, havingcharge of all receiver and loud speak-er development and design of Radiolasin conjunction with the General Elec-tric Co., for the Radio Corp. of Amer-ica, as well as transmitters, carriercurrent equipments and Photophones.The department in 1920 consisted ofapproximately 16 employes and hasgrown to 327.

LEAVES TEMPLE CO.

Chicago, Ill., Monday.

The resignation of Gordon C. Sleeperas vice-president and sales manager ofthe Temple Corporation, radio manu-facturer, was announced here today,Mr. Sleeper intending to enter the in-vestment brokerage business with aNew York house after the first of theyear. His successor has not yet beenannounced. Fred A. Marchev, founderand president of the Temple organiza-tion, is expected here within a few daysafter a stay in Europe. The company,entering set manufacture within thepast year after a prior success in radiospeaker production, is stated to have5210 dealers, six-month shipments inexcess of $4,000,000 to date and distri-butor representation in every importantmarket in the country with the excep-tion of Jacksonville and Salt Lake City.

Mr. Sleeper's intention to enter thebrokerage business will take from radioone of its veterans, as he entered theart after service in the United StatesArmy with commissioned rank duringthe World War. A native of Boston,and with considerable business experi-ence there before his Army service, hesettled in New York after the Armisticeand with the advent of popular broad-casting organized the Sleeper RadioCorp. The concern outgrew its modestdowntown offices in a short time, be-came allied with Henry Waterson, ofthe music publishing firm of Waterson,Berlin, & Snyder and later establishedin Long Island City, whence it becamethe eastern division of the Temple com-pany, later consolidating its activitieshere.

Philadelphia, Pa., Friday.

A. Atwater Kent, president of theAtwater Kent Manufacturing Co., an-nounced today the appointment of F.E. Basler as general sales manager ofthe company, succeeding Vernon W.Collamore, who has resigned.

Mr. Basler was previously assistantPales manager of the company in chargeof sales administration affairs and hasbeen active in the general sales activityof the company. He brings to his newposition a wide experience in sales andfinancing, having served in sales ex-ecutive capacities with nationally knowncompanies in other fields.

The new appointment will not dis-turb the existing sales personnel otherthan to generally extend the sales su-pervisory duties of Mr. Basler, it isstated.

The Atwater Kent company is con-tending vigorously with a shortage ofAtwater Kent screen grid sets, whichduring the past 30 days has been coun-try -wide. All during December theirproduction has been speeded up to capa-city in an endeavor to catch up witha demand unprecedented in the annalsof the institution.

Ordinarily, the Atwater Kent fac-tories are closed during the Christmasholiday season for inventory taking butthe reverse is the case this year. Wheelsare turning in the huge 321 acre plantas rapidly today as they turn at peakproduction periods. Public demand, itis said, has practically stripped baredistributors' and dealers' floors of At-water Kent merchandise. The flood oforders from every section of the coun-try has kept the Atwater Kent factoryhard pressed to meet the demand, de-spite recent tremendous increases inproduction schedules.

rupcy was filed here yesterday againstthe Buckingham Radio Corp., this city.

The Buckingham organization was amanufacturer of radio chassis.

HERE COMES THE FUTURE

Philosophic conclusions of fact impart to a moment likeNew Year's the only significance it has apart from the turnof the calendar. It is a time for doing a little thinking out

loud.The events of 1929 show that, no matter what the allied

industries may do, it is likely that every four or five yearspublic demand will lapse below all reasonable anticipation.

The only big new feature for enhancing radio saleabilityin the immediate future is the application of remote control.

Television may be nearer than many people now believe

but it also is showing evidence of ability to develop into agreat new separate art, much as the talking machine devel-oped as a great new addition to the field of musical instru-ments.

Nowhere nearly as many people went definitely broke dur-ing the excitements of the past year as rumor states, andthose that did deserved to.

Two men who know a good deal about the industry satdown the other day and chalked off seventeen producers asfading out of the radio picture, and eight brand-new onescoming in-a net loss of nine names not allowing for a fewof the nine that will effect reorganizations and take up thebattle when, as and if they quit it.

The burst of insolvency proceedings that has swept sev-eral of the 'luxury' lines of business to which attention wasthoughtfully directed by financial writers and economic sharpsfollowing the October and November securities markets sug-gests that the legal profession knows how to stimulate busi-ness of its own, possibly with 'bankruptcy rings' in the 'receiv-ership racket.'

Tens of millions of people are ready and willing to buyradio product if they see any reason why they should.

Considerable doubt may be said to surround further revo-lutionary development in tube performance; there is enoughsensitivity, selectivity or tone volume in available tube hook-ups and there is question whether any newer objective willbe worth having after it has been gained.

Everyone to whom independent sources of knowledge areopen sees a rapid and apparently lasting decrease in the num-ber of distributors of radio and this will in turn be reflectedby a decrease in the number of dealers.

The entire situation assures more future business for thefewer who will be left to share in it.

A GOOD RESOLUTION

Among thousands of jobber salesmen and hundreds offactory salesmen circulating through the national market,many are doing themselves and radio in general the greatestpossible disservice by spreading harmful rumor about com-

petitors as hard and as fast as they can. How pernicious theactivity of gossip -mongers is can be accurately foreseen byrealizing that, as vigorously as accredited sources put forthtruthful, encouraging fact about the present state of the busi-ness, the more vigorously whispering campaigns by irrespon-sibles tear it down.

It is part and parcel of the emotional characteristics ofthe home -entertainment field that a fifty or sixty -dollar sales-man becomes a trade authority as long as he stays in a retailstore. The next fellow that comes along is as readily installedin eminent credibility and so, instead of business conversation,vicarious thrills are fed to the dealer during his ostensiblebuying or selling hours. The apostles of hearsay apparentlyget quite as much sustenance out of a good day's gossipingwell done as out of a good day's sales securely made.

Tale -bearing is as old and deceptive a pursuit as sellinggold bricks, yet a man who will give respectful attention tothe wildest yarns that a fertile mind can develop to fosterthe position of its own goods would feel insulted if accusedof having bought the city hall from a stranger. Taking candyfrom children is no easier than feeding taffy to a sucker, butthe credulous in radio -music circles swallow anything thatcompetition tells about other competition, and cry for more.

With the turn of the year comes a time for idle and mali-cious tattling to stop, and it must be remembered that it takestwo to make a rumor, one to tell and the other to listen to it.There is not a line or an enterprise in the field that cannot beattacked, if mendacity and self-interest are the only rules inthe game. There is no purpose in assertions of the soundnessin and good prospect for the business of anybody, if the posi-tion of everybody else is asperged in the same breath. Thebest resolution that everyone can make, and without a parti-cle of cost in the bargain, this New Year's is not to spreadgossip, or listen to it.

The incurables may very well be reminded of the signthat used to stand in the bedrooms, beside the fly -speckedmirror and over the cracked water pitcher, of the commercialtravelers' hotel in a little Western town:

"This ain't the Waldorf-Astoria; if it was, it wouldn't behere. You ain't J. P. Morgan; if you was, you wouldn't behere. We know this hotel is on the hum but, stranger, howabout yourself ?"

AN INNER REVOLUTION

The tube business, like the gentleman in the popular songof recent vintage, has been having its ups and downs and asso many producers in it have seen the light of day within thepast year of obsolescence of the ill-fated "clause nine," someof them may appropriately exclaim with the poet, "Oh, if wewere so soon to be done for, what were we ever begun for?"

Now, there is only one hard and fast rule to which tubemanufacture and merchandising can securely and profitablyadhere. As in any business, the fellow who makes or sellsa good tube and conducts his operations sensibly will make

an enduring success. The main cause for stringent difficultyfacing any present tube operation that has no future is prob-ably that its progenitors sought to get rich quick. There area substantial number of good brands, well made by thought-ful concerns, which have as definite a place in the picture-and very likely a more lucrative one in proportion to capitalinvestment-as any number of set makers.

There can be no more doubt about the immense marketfor radio tubes than there is about the demand for sets, withthe addendum that tubes wear out much faster and with moreuniversality of replacement need than the latter do. It shouldrequire only good business practice, as embodied in qualitymanufacture, careful merchandising and conservative financ-ing, to put over any tube enterprise big.

For the time being, the industry in this accessory isundergoing as revolutionary a debacle as has swept radio ingeneral. So, in part at least, the disappearance of failing con-cerns will automatically remedy the situation. The survivorshave a number of acute problems to face. It is the contentionof some shrewd observers of trade demand and the consumerservice collateral to it that initial equipment for a set sale isinseparable from the set trade -mark, whether the tubes aremade by the set maker or selected by him. It is the conten-tion of others that every jobber and dealer has the businessright to select the tubes he believes best, in terms of his ownprofit possibilities besides.

It is most probable that both these schools of practicewill gain and hold adherents for some years in the industryto come. The qualitative merit of any tube so far has fluctu-ated so considerably not alone year in and year out but some-times within a single year that very many makers and sellersof sets hesitate to bind themselves protractedly in any pro-nouncedly public way with a single tube product. The oldesttube lines have been the most successful and dependable inthis experience, as is only natural, for not even in radio tubesis there extensive substitute for time, experience and re-sources.

For the time being, tube trade practices are so demoral-ized that product is being sold at retail as low as 27 cents andstandard brands are slaughtered with the phrase, "Come inand see what we will do for you!" This is getting pretty lowdown in the dregs of business. But it will not be very longuntil the industry turns definitely upward, firstly because ofthe survival of the fittest that has already begun and nextbecause tube demand must increase as surely as the radiobusiness itself.

Because of the underlying strengthof business conditions plus the govern-ment's attitude which is restoring con-fidence, I do not look for a long con-tinued recession in business. After thefirst quarter of 1930 I would look fora gradual pick-up in retail sales vol-ume.

The situation in the radio industryis none too clear at the moment andany one who attempts to predict whatthis industry will do is apt to be wrong,still, I cannot help but feel that in 1930there will be fundamental changes inthe merchandising of radio.

It seems to me that manufacturers,wholesalers and dealers will give morethought to net profit rather than vol-ume of sales. From my observationnearly every one in this business hasbeen striving for a tremendous volumeof sales, always hoping that the profitsat the end of the year would be in

proportion, but somehow the unexpect-ed always happens with the result thatthose in a position to boast of a satis-factory profit are much in the minor-ity.

The radio industry must, during 1930,approach its problems, giving morethought to net results and in so doingmany of the uneconomic practices soprevalent in radio selling will stop."

Predicts Tubes With

More Power in 1930This season has proven that quality

reproduction in radio receivers is para-mount regardless of price, James A.Kennedy, eastern sales manager of theJensen Radio Mfg. Co., Chicago, makerof speakers, declared last week at hisoffices at 126 Liberty street, New York.

Mr. Kennedy believes that sets dur-ing 1930 will use less but more power-ful tubes, housed in smaller consolecabinets with electric -dynamic speakersof wider frequency range.

Leadership is not built in a year,or two years; it comes with long yearsof pioneering, courage and successfulmerchandising; its permanency is as-sured by limitless resources, organ-ized and ceasless research, and engi-

neering built up from the beginningof the radio industry.

The experience of the year 1929 hasshown that the dealer cannot profitablyspread his selling efforts over a multi-plicity of radio lines without limitinghis profits and increasing his businessrisks. He has learned that the smallerthe number of conflicting radio lines hecarries, the greater his concentrationof selling effort, the lower his cost ofoperation, and the smaller the risks in-volved, all of which factors mean larg-er profits. It will be the problem ofthe far - seeing dealer, therefore, tochoose carefully the radio productwhich on the basis of past experience,insures stability and permanence aswell as immediate profit. Having madethis choice, the dealer will be able totake full advantage of all his oppor-tunities with confidence in the future.

The life -blood of our business isbroadcasting, and we who merchandisereceivers can never afford to forgetthis. Those engaged in broadcastingand those who have supported the pro-grams, deserve the highest credit :forthe gratifying progress made in theyear now closing.

The year 1930 should be even a bet-t(r year. The public is more boundto us than ever before. Performancewill continue to improve. The tradewill solve for itself the problems ofavoiding over -production and' unevendistribution.

The American Piano Co.subsidiaries are Chickering & Sons,with assets at $575,000 and liabilitiesof $538,000; The Ampico Corp., withliabilities of $364,000 and assets of$461,000; William Knabe & Co., Inc.,with liabiliites of $286,000, and assetsof $415,000; the Mason & Hamlin Co.,with liabilities placed at $431,000 andassets at $544,000; the Foster Arm-strong Co., with liabilities placed at$756,000 and assets at $977,000; theAmerican Piano Retail Stores, Inc.,with liabilities of $119,000 and assetsamounting to $121,000, and the Ameri-can Piano Trading Co.

The Irving Trust Co. was appointedequity receiver in each of these cases.

In each instance the estimated assetsexceed the estimated liabilities, thuspointing to a claimed condition of sol-vency embarrassed temporarily by ur-gent obligations. Radio is no longer a luxury, but anecessity. It is a necessity in the homeand this field has only been tapped.Of the thirty million homes in thiscountry, probably not more than ninemillion are at present equipped withsets and a large share of that nine mil-lion ought to be replaced with betterand more modern sets. Then, too, justas many families have two or moreautomobiles, many are installing two ormore radios in their homes.

Radio is rapidly extending into otherfields. Receivers are being used in air-planes to enable them to be guided byairplane beacons when flying at nightor in a fog, to correct clocks by pick-

ing up time signals from Arlington, bypolice departments to keep in contactwith their automobile squads in thefield, in trains for communication be-tween the caboose and engine, in pleas-ure automobiles, on ocean going pas-senger ships, in schools for instruc-tion and entertainment and in hotelsfor entertaining guests.

Broadcasting companies are continu-ally bettering their broadcasts by in-corporating improvements in theirtransmitters, which is a great aid increating a desire for radios. Industriessponsoring programs are assemblingthe greatest array of talent in the his-tory of entertainment and are payingapproximately $7,000,000 to artists forpresenting their programs.

The diversity of uses and improve-ments in broadcasting facilities andtechnique during 1930 will have amarked effect on radio sales.

genuine stability in 1930," in the opin-ion of Fred G. Carson, vice-presidentand general manager of the ColonialRadio Corp., Long Island City, N. Y."'What has gone or what is coming isno mystery to those who have felt thepulse of radio, and the setting for theindustry's entrance upon its period ofmaturity is a happy one," Mr. Carsondeclared. He further said in part:

"The recent analyses made by RogerW. Babson now point to an upwardtrend in general business prosperity.The industrial expansion launched byPresident Hoover and enthusiasticallyendorsed by the country's leading ex-ecutives will play a big part in helpingto dispel any trace of depression thatmay be lingering in the public mjnd.Continued good wages, and in manycases increased wages, are providingthe consumer with sufficient funds tomeet his obligations. The radio indus-try, which depends to a great extentupon installment buying, should experi-

ence a healthy reaction because of theseactivities.

"At the beginning of this upwardtrend in business there is every indi-cation that the radio industry willthrow off its awkwardness which hasbeen characteristic of its adolescentgrowth, and will develop gracefullyalong stable, scientific lines.

"How has the recent development ofthe radio industry affected the indivi-dual manufacturer?

"The answer is simple: Those firmswho have watched the signs and haveguided themselves accordingly will bein a stronger position in 1930 than theyhave ever been. Expansion on the partof the manufacturer, as consumer de-mand indicated, was a healthy develop-ment and will gather strength and mo-mentum in 1930. Any other basis ofexpansion will be disastrous.

"The careful, conservative policywhich has always governed and is nowgoverning the steady growth of theColonial Radio Corp. is an assurance todealers that every step taken is one ofstrength and solidity."

The two new Philco chassis are to beknown as models 95 and 76. The form-er is an automatic volume control radiohaving nine tubes and is also to beknown as the screen grid plus. Threescreen grid tubes are used in this chas-sis, which will be available in all Philcomodels except the new console. Model76 is a seven tube set including threescreen grid tubes.

This set has four tuned circuits in-cluding a double tuned input circuit.It has specially designed radio fre-quency transformers giving substan-tially equal amplification and selectiv-ity throughout the broadcast frequencyband. It has Philco balanced -unit con-struction and a local -distance switch.

This new chassis will be used in thenew console and in all other furnitureand table models manufactured byPhilco.

'I'he second installment of the seven-teenth annual pair of holiday enter-tainments tendered to the headquartersorganization of the Consolidated TradePublications, Inc., by Edward H. Davis,president, took place last Monday eve-ning, nineteen members of the corn-bined staffs making up the group. Theparty dined at the Metropolis Club onFifty-seventh street, later attending aperformance of "Young Sinners" at theMorosco Theatre.

The 1929 event was somewhat moreauspicious than most of the holidayfestivities dotting the long career ofthe Consolidated publications back to1874, when the United States TobaccoJournal was established, as this yearfor the first time the enterprise em-braces three weekly trade journals, theTALKING MACHINE and RADIOWEEKLY, the "United States TobaccoJournal" and the "Confectionery & IceCream World," established last spring.In any event, all those present

bore their responsibilities lightly, atleast for the evening, and professed nofear of the time when they will be pro-ducing a weekly business paper in somefield every day, instead of merely everyother day as at present.

Oratory being banned at the dinnerwhich preceded the theatre party, not-withstanding the presence of suchsilver-tongued performers as Otto H.Davis and Joseph M.' Strauss, the mo-ments of whimsy at the party ranlargely toward Hollywood horse -play.A dribble glass, whose contentsmysteriously decanted upon the vestand trousers of the imbiber with verylittle touching his palate, puzzled Maur-ice Einsohn and still more so Fred W.Lohr, and buns made of cotton battingresisted the efforts of various dinerswhile waiting for the oysters. EdwinO. Farnum criticized the two playsfrom a Celtic viewpoint for the Belfast"Torchlight & Observer," of which he isthe Rutherford, (N. J., U. S. A.) corre-spondent in private life and WilliamEigenrauch disdained applause at theheavy necking of the hero in " Young

Sinners." Copious douches of Mr.Woolworth's perfumes from a water -gun secreted upon the body and per-son of Maurice Einsohn suggested thatthe next Consolidated publication willbe devoted to manicuring and perman-ent waves.

"In our new research department,which will be completed before nextspring, we will not only conduct re-search for the improvement of tubes,but will also work out efficient circuitsfor their use," Mr. Kauer declared.

"By developing circuits which willimmediately use the product of our re-search department, radio progress willbe aided greatly. Such plans will beturned over to the set manufacturersfor the best use they can make ofthem."

Radio Industry Has No Basis for Pessimism

Over 1930 Prospects, Says Ernest Kauer

l'rovidence, R. I., Thursday.The radio industry is now going

through a stabilizing period that willbe a benefit to all manufacturers whohave maintained competent merchan-dising and advertising policies, and tothose manufacturers whose productshave stood the test of quality, ErnestKauer, president of the CeCo Manu-facturing Co., Inc., this city, said todayin discussing the prospects of the radioindustry for 1930.

There is no doubt that each manu-facturer will find that the radio businesswill require consistent effort on hispart, and the dealer and jobber shouldinvestigate thoroughly his source ofsupply, Mr. Kauer stated. The dealerand jobber should also make it a pointto determine that the manufacturer'sfinancial position is such that the man-ufacturer can at all times back up hisproduct. He further said in part:

"There is no reason to exhibit undueoptimism, but neither is there any basisfor pessimism. It is true that the radioindustry experienced a severe slump inthe last part of 1929, normally expectedto be the best in the year. I dare saythere will not be any considerable acti-vity in the early part of 1930. However,when that is said, I believe the worstpart of the picture has been faced.

"Doubtless, a large amount of anti-cipated profits have not materialized.I do believe, however, that theyare only delayed, that within this newyear they will be realized.

"It must be remembered that theradio industry has had slumps beforewithout impeding the industry's marchof progress. In none of the industry'sprevious experiences, however, wasthere anywhere near such a state ofstabilization as obtained in the trial ofthe period from October to December.No doubt the caution engendered by theexperience will find its reaction in help-ing trade in 1930.

"The radio manufacturing division isin a magnificent state of technicaldevelopment. There is little excess of

CeCo Presidentmerchandise in warehouses or on deal-ers' shelves. The industry starts witha clean slate in 1930, and with econo-mies in merchandising and distribution,which are being brought forward con-tinually, this new year should be aprofitable one.

"We are planning to spend in 1930approximately $200,000 on a completeresearch laboratory. We are also ap-propriating certain sums of money forthe development of high speed equip-ment. We see no reason, at this time,why the sales of CeCo radio tubesshould be less in 1930 than for the year1929. Our advertising appropriation isto be increased, likewise our sales or-ganization.

"It is entirely possible that set manu-facturers may make certain refinementsin the circuits using screen grid tubes,and that tube manufacturers may an-nounce one or more types or new tubes."

Set Makers Universally

Accept Electric Pick -UpSome of the finest music in the

world; some, unfortunately, which cannever be duplicated by the same musi-cal organization or voice, is recordedin the sound track of the phonographdisc. Such has been the advancementof scientific experimentation and inven-tion in the past few years that it isnow possible to reproduce music takenfrom these records at almost any de-gree of volume at the choice of theoperator.

Modern developments in radio appa-ratus point toward an almost universalacceptance among manufacturers ofthe inclusion of a special jack or jacksin their sets to permit the attachmentof an electric phonograph pick-up sothat outside the cost of this unit, allrecords can be played electrically usingthe amplifier in the radio set for thepurpose of magnifying the sound im-pressed on them.

Mutual Understanding

Needed Among Dealers,

Jobbers, Says I. E. Cohen"Many paramount issues that are now

prevalent, leading toward the disrup-tion of both the wholesale and retailradio industries, should immediately bediscussed and settled for the mutualbenefit of all, so that the New Yearmay start an era of prosperity, builton a solid foundation," stated IrvingE. Cohen, secretary of the Radio Re-tailers, Inc., and of the Unity RadioStores, Inc., both of New York, lastweek.

"What with the manifold problemsarising almost daily in the radio in-dustry, and the ever-increasing diffi-culties confronting dealers and whole-salers alike, in the pursuit of theirlivelihood, the necessity for mutualunderstanding and co-ordination be-tween the groups becomes an urgentmatter," Mr. Cohen stated. He furthersaid in part:

"In the presence of modern mass pro-duction and distribution, competitionbetween groups and even between in-dustries, hand - to - mouth buying, andmodern facilities for transportation,banking and communication, the old-time competitor, standing alone andwithout adequate prompt informationas to his own trade data, finds himselfdriven to destructive competition andother desperate measures in order tokeep his business going. He must seeksome form of relief.

"This relief is in sight. The Ameri-can business man is working out suc-cessfully a new theory of business con-duct, summed up in the phrase 'cooper-ation in competition.'

There seems no alter-native to the continuance of presentunsatisfactory conditions, to the 'prof-itless prosperity' that seems to be thepresent lot of all concerned. This war-fare for the survival of the fittest getsnowhere, for it never ends to allow thesurviving fittest to enjoy the fruits ofvictory. Nor is an American going tofind a suitable remedy in combinationsand mergers, looking toward monopoly.Nor will a remedy be found in pricefixing or other illegal short-cuts whichinvariably return to plague the partici-pant.

"One of the most demoralizing in-fluences in the industry is ignorant com-petition. Its destructive effect is illus-trated by our own industry. When atrade fails to make money over a periodduring normal times, that is an indexthat there is something unhealthy inthat industry. Knowledge of costs maybe so insufficient, or in competition thefactor of current cost may be so ig-nored that prices are brought downbelow the level of profit. "It is difficult to anticipate radicalchanges or improvements in the radiomanufacturing field," Powel Crosley,Jr., president of Crosley Radio Corp.,this city, said today in predicting theradio situation for the coming year.Mr. Crosley reviewed radio's history asfollows:

"First we saw the crystal detectorsets; then came the vacuum tube with

"In 1927 came the completely revo-lutionary change to the A.C. tube sets,which would operate direct off the elec-tric light current. The past year hasseen what has been pronounced to bethe greatest development of all in radio-the screen -grid tube and its appli-cation to circuits in radio sets. Per-haps the development of the movingcoil type of speaker should be men-tioned, for it has greatly improvedradio reception in the past two years.

"There now seems to be nothingradically new and different on the hori-zon. It now appears that radio setmakers face no radical changes forsome time to come. The developmentof the modern screen -grid tube set withmoving coil speaker leaves little to bedesired in the way of further improve-ment. The radio manufacturer can nowconcentrate his efforts on the perfec-tion of detail and reduction in manu-facturing cost while the radio publiccan be assured that a modern set pur-chased today should give satisfactoryperformance for years to come."

One of the unusual wonders of theradio industry, often lost to sight whenwe talk of the wonders of reception,is that it took radio only a very fewyears to reach the point of trouble -free mechanical development that re-quired nearly twenty years in the auto-

motive industry.Turn back the pages to 1921 and '22.

How often were we invited to the homeof a friend to hear his new 'wireless'and how often did we arrive to find'something wrong, I'll have to take itapart again.' It was like taking a ridein one of the first automobiles. Maybewe rode back and maybe we walked.

But come ahead to 1926, and fromthen on until today. You turn on yourradio just as confidently as you do yourelectric light, and it is just as certainto respond. It wasn't until along about1920 that the automobile reached thispoint of certainty. Even at that timemany persons were still 'jacking up'their cars for the winter.

But the nearer to perfection per-formance has become in both radio and

the automobile, the more important itis that what little service is requiredbe given instantly and intelligently.Reception dare not be interrupted-ithas become too much a part of ourlives.

"Radio is now considered an essentialpart of the lives of millions of Ameri-cans and is not to be considered in theclass of luxuries. It is an indispensablepart of the American home life and assuch is bound to get a large proportionof the money spent regularly by fami-lies for such necessities as householdgoods and furniture.

"In the course of a few years, thepublic has been trained to purchasenationally advertised radios-sets thathave already stood the test. There arestill hundreds of thousands of radio -less homes in our territory and a largeproportion of these will undoubtedlybe graced with Majestic sets before theend of 1930. Also, there is the replace-ment market to be considered. Special Note on New Tax RateReduction.

Income tax rates will be lower for1929 than they were for 1928, by rea-son of a special reduction just passed.The reduction applies to the normaltax, and amounts to 1% on each brack-et. Heretofore the rates were 1% ,

3% and 5%. For 1929 they will bei, </e, 2% and 4%. Corporations havealso been given a 1% reduction, mak-ing the tax rate for 1929, 11 S against12% of last year.

Exemption for Dependents.

In the last article we started thesubject of exemptions. We found thatevery unmarried person is entitled toan exemption of at least $1,500. If heis the head of a family, he gets a$3,500 exemption. We also noted thatthe exemption for every married coupleis $3,500. We concluded by saying thatbesides these exemptions, additionalamounts were allowed for support ofdependents. It is the explanation ofthese additional amounts that we re-served for the present article.

The rules governing exemptions fordependents are very simple. A personis allowed $400 for each dependent,Two requirements must be met to beentitled to the exemption. First-thedependent must be either under theage of eighteen or else incapable ofself-support, and second, the one claim-ing the exemption must be the chiefcontributor towards the support of thedependent. Let us go into these re-quirements a little further.

Take the first one about the age ofthe dependent or the incapacity forself-support. A parent supporting anineteen year old son through collegecould not, under the rule, claim a $400exemption for support of the son be-cause of the limitation that the depend-ent cannot be over eighteen. Likewise,a son would not be able to claim ex-emption for s sporting his father un-less because of some mental or physicaldefect, the father was incapable ofearning a livelihood.

The second requirement, that of beingthe chief support, arises where morethan one person is a contributor. Itis not uncommon, for instance, for sev-eral of the children of a family to con-tribute to the support of a parent.Where that is the case, only the onewho is the chief contributor is entitledto claim exemption. If they all con-tribute equally, none of them can availthemselves of the allowance.

It is not necesary for the dependentto be in any way legally related to theperson who claims the exemption. Thus,

an individual may support his friendand become entitled to the $400 exemp-tion.

Another point worthy of emphasis isthat the $400 applies for each depend-ent. If a son supports a dependentmother and father, he is entitled to$800. If there are five dependents, heis entitled to $2,000, and so on.

Husband and Wife.

The way the exemption for depend-ents works out in the case of the re-turns of husband and wife is ratherinteresting. In the first place, neitherone is regarded as dependent upon theother. (This is looking ahead to Utop-ian days.) Therefore, the husband can-not take the $400 allowance for sup-porting his wife, or vice versa. The$3,500 exemption is supposed to coverthat part.

However, they can take the exemp-tion for supporting others. In this re-gard when we spoke about the $3,500allowance, we said that it could bedivided between the husband and wifeas they deemed best. In the case ofthe exemption for dependents, however,no such division can be made. Theallowance can be deducted only in thereturn of the one who is the real sup-porter. Thus, if it is the husband who

supports the children, only he is en-titled to the exemption. Of course ifhe files a joint return with his wife,this point makes no difference.

Head of Family.In the case of the head of the family,

if the individuals being supported aredependents as previously defined, thehead of the family is not only entitledto the $3,500 allowance, but also to theexemption for dependents. For exam-ple, if a son lives with and supportshis parents who are incapable of self-support, his exemption is $3,500 forbeing head of the family, and $800 fortwo dependents, or a total of $4,300.

Last Day of Year Controls.Suppose there is a change in the

situation during the year, and a personwho was a dependent at one time nolonger is one at another, or vice versa.That situation arises very frequently.A child who becomes eighteen duringthe year will furnish an example. Like-wise, a child born, say, in December.Also, a parent may become incapaci-tated during the year.

When we spoke about the exemptionsfor the single man and the marriedman, we noticed that if a change tookplace during the year, the exemptionwas computed on a pro -rata basis. Thatis not the case, however, with theexemption for dependents. The rulehere is that it is the situation on thelast day of the year that controls.Thus, if a child becomes eighteen onDecember 30, no exemption at all isallowed. On the other hand, if a childis born on that date, the full $400exemption is permissible.

Thus far in the series we have cov-ered who must file a return and whatexemptions are allowed. We are nowready to go into the subject of taxrates and the method of computing thetax. That will tell us how to deter-mine our tax bill if we are fortunateenough in having an income in excessof exemptions. Accordingly, the nextarticle will be devoted to rates.

1930 TO BE BIGGEST

YEAR IN INDUSTRY,

SAYS RAY H. MANSONROCHESTER, N. Y., Monday.

Prediction that 1930 will be the big-gest year in the history of the radioindustry from the standpoint of saleswas made on Saturday by Ray H. Man-son, chief engineer of the Stromberg-Carlson Telephone Mfg. Co., this city.

Mr. Manson explained that more andmore radio owners will exchange theirold battery sets for the modern all -electric receivers, as the public nowrealizes that the seemingly large orig-inal cost of the modern receivers incomparison with battery sets is morethan equalized by the difference in costof operation of both sets. He pointedout that the operation costs for elec-tric current alone for the, battery settamounts to about $50.00 each year,while that of the modern "all -electric"sets is only $10.00 for the same hoursof operation. This is an annual savingof $40.00.

Another reason he gave for predictedincrease in radio business for 1930 wasthat radio is no longer a luxury, buta necessity everywhere-in the home,in the business house, in trains, in avi-ation, and in the schools-and he esti-mated the demand for the better makesof sets would greatly surpass the sup-ply.

In speaking of the radio industry in1929, Mr. Manson said, "This year hasbeen the greatest radio year in the his-tory of the business." The greatestfactor in making this banner year wasthe improvement in radio apparatus.Notable among these advances was theA. C. screen grid tubes. These tubeshave proven their worth and their per-formance has assured radio engineersthat no changes are needed in them for1930 sets.

The use of these screen grid tubesmeant an improvement over 1928 setsin sensitivity, selectivity, audio ampli-fication and better reproduction.

By the use of these tubes the 1929sets also were made quieter and theA.C. hum has been practically elim-inated.

Another big improvement incorpo-rated in the 1929 sets, according toMr. Manson, was the use of a UY -245power tube which has provided greatervolume without distortion in the re-ceiver output circuit.

He said that the design of loudspeakers centered around the built-inelectro -dynamic type, which have af-forded a very natural reproductionwith big volume.

"Present indications are that themost noticeable changes in the 1930radio receiving sets will be in the cabi-nets," Mr. Manson said. "Efforts willbe directed by set designers to makecabinets more distinctive and to givethem a note of individuality."

CROSLEY SLOGANFITS EVEN IN JAIL

MUSKOGEE, OKLA., Thursday.In this city, "You're There With a

Crosley," even if you are in jail, asinmates of the Federal and City Jailhere will testify. J. C. Plato, a salesrepresentative of the Beam Electric &Radio Co., this city, sold the Crosleyto the jail.

For some psychological reason, theinmates prefer classical music, it isreported.

May Radio Companies

Hold 1st Convention;

Set $5,000,000 GoalThe first convention of the staffs of

the May radio distributing companiesof Newark and New York took placeat the Newark Elks Club last week andproved such a success that similar af-fairs will be held regularly by the Mayinterests. In attendance were the exec-utives and members of the sales forceof the May organizations, with D. W.May, president of the companies, atthe helm.

At the conclusion of the session itwas declared that the May companieswould strive for a goal of $5,000,000 insales during 1930.

A feature of the gathering was thewelcome extended to the newest Maydistributing organization in New YorkCity. The Manhattan delegation washeaded by Tom O'Loughlin, a recentacquisition to the May forces, and salesmanager of the new branch, located at

34 West Houston street. Mr. O'Lough-lin spoke enthusiastically of the futureof the new branch.

Mr. May outlined some of the planshe has in mind for 1930. Other execu-tives of the company to speak wereB. P. Habig, vice-president and gen-eral manager of the May companies;Earl Pullen, sales manager, May RadioCorp., Newark; Walter Ferry, salesmanager, May Distributing Corp., NewYork; W. H. Topping, credit manager,May Distributing Corp.; H. U. Mann,retail sales manager, May Radio Co.,and William King, sales manager ofD. W. May, Inc., of Newark. Severalfactory representatives were also heard.

As one of the final items of business,it was decided to organize the MayAssociation, under whose auspices thesocial activities of the May organiza-tions will be conducted in the future.

Following the business session therewas a dinner and entertainment. Wal-ter Ferry developed as a very generousSanta Claus. There was a present foreverybody, with the big package forD. W. May. This was a handsome duckgun, which Mr. May said came at anopportune time, as he had planned a

duck hunting expedition for the nearfuture.

TO COMBAT SPREADING "JOY RIDING" EVILTucson, Ariz., Wednesday.

Overwhelmed by a flood of "joy -rid-ing," radio dealers of Tucson formed anorganization late in November, andput in effect a deposit system, such asdealers in many parts of the countryhave reported to the TALKING MA-CHINE and RADIO WEEKLY mayprove to be the ultimate solution ofthis problem.

Before adopting this plan the officersof the Tucson association obtained dataconcerning its working in Evansville,Ind., where a large number of dealersunited into an association and gave ita trial. Letters from Harold Finke, ofthe Finke Furniture Co., Evansville,Ind., give an encouraging report of theresults of association work in that city.The Radio Dealers of Evansville notonly introduced the deposit system tocurb "joy -riding," but are cooperatingin an enlarged advertising program,and attacking the matter of improvingtrade-in practices. The enthusiasm withwhich association work is being carriedon in Evansville is indicated by an at-tendance of over 100 at their recentbanquet for radio dealers and salesmen.

The deposit plan introduced at Tuc-son provided that trial installationsshould be made by association mem-bers only upon receipt of a $5 deposit.Dealers had printed uniform special re-ceipts, reading as follows: "This is toacknowledge receipt of a deposit offive dollars ($5) by

which applies as a deposit for the de-livery of one radio to the above address.This radio is delivered on strictly anapproval basis and same is not to beacknowledged as a bona fide sale. Uponpurchase of a radio from any memberof the Tucson Radio Association withina period of fifteen days from date here-of this receipt may apply as part of theinitial payment. This receipt is notvalid for credit in the above respectafter the expiration of fifteen daysfrom date.

lic in newspaper advertisements bear-ing the names of the cooperating deal-ers.

The immediate effect was to make agreat reduction in the type of telephonecalls to send out a radio which experi-ence had shown were producing nosales. As one dealer expressed himselfto the correspondent of the "Trade'sOnly Weekly," "Last week we were tak-ing 'em out and bringing 'em in all daylong, every day. We were so busy ac-commodating "joy-riders" we had notime to work on a controlled systemof working our genuine prospects. Thisweek the joy-riders" are letting usalone, and the demonstrations we makeare getting us business.

Early experience with the plan indi-cates that a hundred per cent. mem-bership of the local trade would be agreat advantage. In the absence of thiscondition salsmen of non -subscribingfirms are under strong temptation touse the deposit as a talking point toswing a deal in their favor. On theother hand, the members obtain the

advantage that the "joy-riders" tendto drift to the non-member and increasehis selling costs. It is necessary tohave a carefully worded selling blanktalk to convince the over sensitive andsomewhat egotistical type of prospectof the merit of the innovation. Asso-ciation members received a number ofcomments from intending buyers indi-cating that many people are aware thatradio dealers have been giving toomuch "free service," and expressingpleasure that they "have come to theirsenses" before too much damage wasdone.

Dealers here have learned that the"joy-rider" uses the telephone. It paysto send out a salesman to interview allpersons telephoning, and look up theircredit rating before rushing a set out.The deposit offers a definite and cer-tain device for qualifying the intendingpurchaser.

Austin McWhorter is now proprietorof Fisher's, 118 E. Congress street,long known as the leading music houseof Arizona. Mr. McWhorter continuesto reside in Bisbee, from where he di-rects operations of his local store, Fish-er's in Tucson and other stores atGlobe and Nogales. His brother, IvanMcWhorter, is manager of Fisher's.The former proprietor, George T. Fish-er, has retired after building for 25years to create the biggest and bestmusic house in his state. E. L. Clark,who was manager under Mr. Fisher, iscontinuing his activities with the houseunder the new management.

Fisher's has been doing splendid busi-ness on Victor radio and combinations,records, and Radiola, Atwater Kentand Stromberg-Carlson radio. In theVictor line the ratio of combinationssold during the fall months was high.

Stromberg - Carlson radio has beenfirmly established in Arizona as a setdefinitely indicated for sale to the dis-criminating people who want the finerthings. There are plenty of people whocan afford it.

While it is true that no intelligentbusiness man can predict the ultimateeffect of the recent stock and securitymarket deflation, and while such a

shrinkage may result unfavorably insome industries and sonic territories, Ifirmly believe that for business in gen-eral 1930 will show an increase in totalvolume over 1929, just as 1929 willshow an appreciable increase over 1928.Radio will prove no exception to thisrule for as this is being written fig-ures already available indicate that thisyear's total of radio volume will exceedthat of 1928 just as 1930 will exceed1929.

"Radio a necessity for every home"is a slogan already axiomatic in thetrade and rapidly being accepted bythe public. And yet it is estimatedthat there are ten million electrifiedhomes in the United States withoutup-to-date radio receiving equipment.This is a tremendous potential marketyet to be served and it will he manyyears before anything but temporaryset -backs can affect the radio industry.

I believe that 1930 will mark the

beginning of a new era for the radioindustry. Success will seek out thosewho apply the sound, established prin-ciples to the conduct of their business.Those dealers, wholesalers and manu-facturers who have been indulging inunethical practices, who have beenusing "circus" methods, who have been"high pressuring," telling lies, circu-lating false rumors, misrepresentingtheir services or their merchandise,failing to keep their promises; willsurely find themselves heavily pena-lized in the months to come. Merchantsof the better sort will find 1930 a gold-en opportunity for they will weatherthe storm with colors flying, and busi-ness that has been diverted from theircash register will return-to stay.

Designers and builders of radio ap-paratus have striven mightily to im-prove their products until today, atleast, the high class quality receiverscan be truly termed precision instru-ments faithfully reproducing broadcastprograms without loss of tonal reality.I can say without fear of contradictionthat Fada has been and will continueto be in the front rank of those whostrive to build the best receiving setspossible that the owners may enjoy in-stead of endure their radio.

SEES 1930 AS A "BATTLE OF GIANTSCHICAGO, ILL., Friday.

It would border on the ridiculous toenter into a distorted, frothy predic-tion of a wonderful 1930 in the radioindustry, R. E. Smiley, vice-presidentof the Bremer - Tully ManufacturingCo., this city, said today in an inter-view with a representative of THETALKING MACHINE and RADIOWEEKLY. Nearly everyone who readssuch statements brands them as pure"bunk," but it would not be going toofar, however, to expect a satisfactory1930, provided manufacturers adhere tosane,_ profitable policies predicted onpotential sales rather than productionfacilities, Mr. Smiley declared. He fur-ther said in part:

"It is frequently said in Chicago thatwe are not in business but in a 'racket,'and a resume of the past several yearswould almost convince anybody thatthis statement has some essence oftruth. A wild orgy of spending suchas has probably never been witnessedin any other industry can not help butcause some suffering in an industrysuch as ours, and, as is always thecase, the good must suffer for thelead.Many feel that there will be a consid-erable' housecleaning in the industry,but the more I study it the more I amconvinced that unless the experiencesof 1929 are taken most seriously byeverybody in the industry, we are goingto see a repetition of this year to even

a worse degree. As you review themarket, there are very few nameswhich will be eliminated from the pic-ture during 1930. Some are in troubleat the present time, but this is noguarantee that some 'angel' won't comealong and set them up again within thenext three or four months. It looks asthough there is going to be a battleof giants during 1930 and such being

the case, somebody is going to get hurtwith resultant liquidation and otherembarrassments.

"I believe one of the greatest safe-guards that any manufacturer canhave during 1930 will be flexibility ofproduction, and the more flexible thatproduction can be made, even though itmay be somewhat more costly, the bet-ter off that manufacturer is going tobe. The ideal situation being, of course,flexibility so great that ít would followthe sales curve up or down, and asclose to this that manufacturers cancome, the happier everybody else willbe.

"The lavish, unsound giving of moneyto the larger dealers for the purposeof advertising is, in my opinion, de-plorable and without the desired re-sults. Much better would it be for themanufacturer to take such money andattempt to build around his productthrough proper advertising, an atmos-phere or a background for his productwhich would make for consumer anddealer acceptance and demand. It wouldbe much better if we established thistype of competition rather than thecompetition of seeing how much morewe can give certain dealers than theother fellow. In addition to their adver-tising efforts, most manufacturers havedepended upon the number of dealeroutlets they could secure for their sales,and as a consequence we see the aver-age dealer handling six or more linesof radio equipment, which is economi-cally unsound. Rather would it be bet-ter for the manufacturer to use hisingenuity in devising more aggressiveand efficient selling plans of whichthere has been a noticeable absenceduring the past twelve months.

"My confidence in 1930 is disturbedby the fact that I still believe there ismore medicine to be taken before acure will be affected."

More has been accomplished duringthe past two years towards perfectingthe radio art than in the whole of theprevious history of the industry.

Proportionate progress has also beenmade in the development of sound mer-chandising methods and the establish-ment of permanence in the merchan-dising organization.

These are the basic factors of theradio industry's future; thus, while1929 brought readjustment for somewho were unequipped with resourcesand informed initiative, it has been amost. important year for the entireindustry.

In anticipating the course of theradio industry for 1930 we must lookto the fundamental conditions of eco-nomic prosperity. The volume of radiobusiness we know must be based on thevolume of general business. However,with our present development withinthe industry, we can be certain thatthe proportion of radio business tototal busines for the coming year willbe at least as great as during 1929.

If 1930 brings advancing prosperity,we can count on new sales level. Ifit brings some recession in economicprogress we can still be optimistic ofour standing in the mercantile struc-ture. Contrary to general opinion musi-cal merchandise is one of the least af-fected by any variation in general busi-ness conditions.

The place of radio in 1930 is assured.

Hold DemonstrationOf Baird Television

Sets in New YorkA special demonstration of Baird

television apparatus was conducted lastFriday at the Baird studio, 145 WestForty-fifth street, New York, for mem-bers of the press. The demonstrationwas sponsored by the Baird TelevisionCorp., with headquarters in Londonand New York offices in the Para-mount building.

According to officials in charge ofthe showing, Baird television receivingapparatus is now in production in fac-tories in Germany. The combinationradio set and television receiver, whichalso includes an amplifier, will retailin the neighborhood of $300, while thetelevisor, which is made for attachmentto a radio set, will list at about $65,Baird representatives declared. A tele -reader, to be used in broadcasting read-ing matter, was also shown. The Bairdapparatus uses a disc with only thirtyholes.

Representatives of the television com-pany at the demonstration were Cap-tain W. J. Jarrad, manager; F. J.Bingley, chief engineer; H. C. Good -ridge, D. L. West and D. Campbell.The Misses Lucyle Keeling and AdeleGilbert were the artists used in thedemonstration.

Eugene R. Farny, president of theAll-American Mohawk Corp., of Chi-cago, attended a dinner given by E. A.Joyce and Clayton Bailey, of the C. E.Bailey Co., New England Lyric distri-butors, recently. Mr. Farny in hisspeech before the gathering, said inpart: "During the coming 1930 radioseason, there will be a tendency amongmany manufacturers of quality radioproducts to increase their prices.

"The new year will without doubt bethe biggest ever."

Mr. Farny assured Bailey officialsthat Lyric would play a prominent partin the market and rank with the bestsellers. He also outlined the extensiveadvertising plans for Lyric radio during1930, which are national in their scope.

The office and sales organizations ofthe Ivers & Pond Piano Co. had aChristmas party at the headquarters'offices, 258 Boylston street, to mark

the 50th year of the company's organi-zation.

W. C. Fuhri, vice-president and gen-eral sales manager of the ColumbiaPhonograph Co., was a recent visitorhere.

Norman B. Smith, Columbia Bostonbranch manager, reports that the pasteleven months have shown a decided in-crease over the same period of a yearago.

The Sprague Specialties Co., ofQuincy, Mass., which was organizedthree years ago to manufacture elec-trical condensers, has moved to NorthAdams, Mass.

Robert C. Sprague, president and histwo brothers, Frank and Julian, arethe executives. Albert B. Ayers is incharge of sales.

The American Bosch Magneto Corp.,of Springfield, Mass., reports that in-crease in sales of both radio productsand precision automatic electrical prod-ucts over previous years, have madenecessary the erection of an additionto the present plant on North Mainstreet.

The New England Distributing Co.,of Boston, with offices in Portland,Springfield and Worcester, has beenappointed distributor for the PerrymanElectric Co. in the Northern New Eng-land territory.

The Atlas Plywood Corp., of Boston,and subsidiaries report for the fourmonths ending October 31, 1929, a netprofit of $262,464 after charges andFederal taxes. This compares with anet profit of $99,986 for the correspond-ing four months of last year.

HOLIDAY BUSINESS

BELOW EXPECTATIONS

IN WINDY CITY MARTChicago, Ill., Friday.

Radio business done by local dealersthe week before Christmas was notquite up to that of preceding years involume, though some dealers declaredthat because of the greater number ofhigher priced sets sold, the monetaryvalue was as great, if not greater thana year ago. The most noticeable fea-ture of the holiday business was thebig last-minute rush with requestsmade for installment of sets boughtbefore Christmas. Some of the bigstores made special efforts to installsets, Wurlitzer's agreeing to install anyset purchased before 10 p. m. Christmaseve in time for use the next day, withHartman's agreeing to install all setsbought by noon Tuesday.

A novel feature was staged by radiostation WJBT, which invited owners ofnew radios listening in to have theirsets specially dedicated. Shortly afterthe announcement went over the air,the station started receiving reports ofnew sets bought as soon as the ownerwired or phoned in to the station hisnew set was announced and specialmusic played by a well-known pipe -organist.

In a statement issued this week byWm. C. Grunow, vice-president of the

Grigsby-Grunow Co., he referred to themeeting of Majestic distributors heldlast week, stating that "we have re-ceived detailed reports from all of ourdistributors and district men, represent-ing every part of the country, and theyare entirely satisfactory. Our distribu-tors," he continued "ordered 1,300,000sets for 1930 and when we resume oper-ations December 26, we will start man-ufacturing 4,000 sets a day. We willstart out with about 10,000 employes.Business looks good to us for the newyear, it being our estimate that for thefiscal year ending May 31 we will reachapproximately $70,000,000."

An involuntary petition in bankrupt-cy was filed last week against theGrand Rapids Furniture Co., whichoperates five furniture and radio storesin Chicago. Amounts claimed due arefor $4,389 and $3,672 to the KlamerFurniture Co.

trial leaders throughout the nationleaves no doubt of a prosperous yearto come.

We have unquestionably passedthrough a critical period of adjustmentin so far as stocks were concerned.One of the principal understandablereasons for this slaughter was theusual desire of a lot of people who justdidn't "belong," to grab off some easymoney. The tremendous losses sus-tained by the average speculator con-sisted of paper profits, never collected,

or actual profits collected during theyear, which, if the unusual rising mar-ket had not occurred, would never havebeen accumulated. The entire programsimply placed him back either in theposition he previously held, or the loserof a few hundred dollars.

The larger operator, who lost a buck-etful, can in most cases pocket his loss,and still buy more than necessities.

The usual number of suicides hap-pened, but the newspapers used largertype, and incidentally, we haven'theard of a single radio dealer who hasjumped in the river. Every year hashad a slow month or two in radio, andI dare say that this year, the account-ant could prove to the average dealerthat if, for the entire year, he showeda loss, it certainly wasn't due to anystock market slump.

The mouth -to -ear story of unemploy-ment is a myth. On the average, it'sabout the same as last year at thistime, with nothing to worry about.

There probably will be some bargainsin radio sets, but that's due to a lotof manufacturers who counted heads inChina instead of America. All in all,I'm quite sure more radio sets by farwere sold in 1929 than in any otheryear.

The whole country may have takena small spanking, but we Yankeessure have a way of laughing thosethings off-and quickly, too. Brains-action-and guts, working together tosecure luxuries we must have, willundoubtedly make 1930 a real bang-upyear.

Just forget November and get towork.

YEAR-END ACTIVITY

MAINTAINS A GOOD

PACE IN NORTHWESTSeattle, Wash., Wednesday.

Seattle has not, thus far, experiencedthe annual 'dumping' of radio sets onthe retail market at bargain prices. Thereason is ascribed to the fact that thePacific Northwest is so far from themanufacturing centers that the unload-ing comes at a later date in this parti-cular district. Distributors and retail-ers are united in their efforts to main-tain market prices until after the firstof the year, in order that holiday busi-ness may give them their legitimateprices. In a few instances, well knownmakes in discontinued numbers areoffered at substantial reductions by thedealers in general.

M. D. Hall, of Philco in Seattle, an-nounces the arrival in this city of H.Curtis Abbott to take over special saleswork for the company. Mr. Abbott wasformerly general sales manager forLyon & Healy Co. of Chicago. Hisheadquarters are at 2024 Third avenue.

George E. Mathieu, attorney, hasbeen appointed receiver for the HowellPiano Co., 2007 Fourth avenue, on theaction of R. J. Huston and Mary E.Swanstrom, owners, seeking to collect$1,200 due them for rent.

Plans are shaping up for the publica-tion in Seattle of a 32 -page weeklybooklet, containing current broadcastsfrom local stations. Distribution will be

to members of the Radio and MusicTrades Association, who will in turndistribute them to prospective radioowners.

The Poole Electric Co. last weekarranged a special showing of Spartonradios in the big lobby of the Fox thea-tre. Thousands of patrons paused toinspect the new models. Sparton deal-ers of Western Washington have spon-sored Vic Meyers programs over the airevery Monday night. Vic Meyers is anunusually popular orchestra leader wellknown to Seattle theatre and dancepatrons, who has just returned to Seat-tle where he is master of ceremonies atthe Fox theatre.

The United Reproducers Corp. ofSeattle has been formed to manufactureand install a new wall type of radiofor use in apartments and hotels. Theinstrument is called the New Kylectronand has the advantage of permittingfrom one to nine speakers to broadcastfrom the one set simultaneously.

The Liberty Music House will here-after be Seattle's exclusive Sonoraradio dealer, comes the announcementfrom E. R. Mitchell, president of thelocal company.

A. E. Filler has been appointed salesmanager of the Transport Corporation,local Brunswick radio distributors. Fil-ler comes to the position after a longexperience as a sales executive andwholesale representative. He has beenconnected with the Transport companyat intervals for a period of years. Hewill have charge of the radio divisionand in this capacity will direct a gen-eral expansion program to provide forthe needs of state-wide dealer organi-zation. Gus Koehler is general salesmanager.

There was little last-minute buyingof any musical merchandise for the holi-day. The usual complaint from somethat business was not what it shouldhave been, was heard, but generallyspeaking, there was more businessdone, especially in radio, than is rea-lized.

Several distributors of nationallyknown sets were unable to fill ordersfor certain models. Dealers were notoverloaded but had been buying con-servatively for some time past as theirneeds dictated and as a result thereare no big surplus stocks left over. Itis expected that those who receive divi-dend checks around the first of the yearwill buy radio or other musical mer-chandise, thus giving business a sendoff for the new year. A substantialvolume was done in records, especiallyin album sets, and these were featuredby many stores with good results.

Business in small goods was only fairand there was quite a lot of complaint,especially from the downtown stores.

Wurlitzer's opened their old store atEuclid avenue and East 105th street forthe holidays. The company slid a largevolume of business in radio sets thisyear and also sold a number of pianos.

The Erner Electric Co., one of thelargest electrical supply houses in thecity, is now known as the Erner Elec-tric Division of the Westinghouse Elec-tric & Supply Co.

loss several days before Xmas throughrobbery of their store at Euclid ave-

nue and East Seventeenth street. Thethieves broke a transom window andgained entrance and then unlocked therear door. They systematically lootedthe entire store and their loot amountedto $3,500. It was mostly in small goods.The company handles a complete line ofmusical merchandise including the Connline of band instruments and nationallyknown makes of radio.

The Ohio Radio Trades Associationwill hold its general meeting early inJanuary at which all divisions will bepresent. The Xmas business is to bediscussed and other matters of inter-est to the trade in general. The com-mittee who have the work of arrangingdetails and entertainment for the com-ing national convention of the Feder-ated body will make their report. Secre-tary Elden Lewis is arranging for thebadges and buttons for delegates, andhas made arrangements with the lead-ing hotels so that there will he ampleaccommodations.

The twlve radio distributors here arewell pleased with the results of theircooperative advertising which ran in allthree Cleveland newspapers for theperiod of a month before Xmas. Theyfeel that it helped to stimulate businessconsiderably and in consequence addi-tional advertising of this kind will berun during the remainder of the season.The many fine programs on the air,both local and relayed, also helped busi-ness a great deal, and many of thesewere featured in this advertising cam-paign.

The annual meeting of the ClevelandMusic Trades Association is to be heldat Hotel Winton on the evening ofJanuary 7th. Dinner will be served at6:30 and there is to be an address onpublicity for musical merchandise atthe business session which will follow.Election of officers for the ensuing yearwill also take place. Anthony L. Mar-esh, president of the association, is topreside.

Buescher's, on Huron road, report avery good business over the holidays.The company specializes in radio andrecords and found both these items verymuch in demand. The company did con-siderable circularizing of its mail listsprior to Xmas and slid considerablenewspaper advertising and receivedgood returns. They have one of themost successful record departments inCleveland and ship many discs to out-of-town points and also to their custo-mers who are abroad.

The Grossman Music Co. reports agood holiday business on Okeh recordsand its numerous line of small goods,which it distributes throughout Ohioand adjoining states.

Majestic dealers enjoyed a good Xmasbusiness throughout the city. A great

deal of cooperative advertising was donein the city newspapers and these weresupplemented by full pages in the vari-ous neighborhood and foreign publica-tions. As a result of this city wide pub-licity there was a good volume of busi-ness secured. -DIHM.

William B. Hollingshead, eighty-oneyears old, who friends say, was ac-claimed years ago as the original in-ventor of the disc phonograph record,died last week it his modest home inEast Chester, N. Y. He was penni-less at the time of his death, althoughhis fortune at one time is said to haveexceeded $500,000.

George Lewis, engineer and vice-president of the Arcturus Radio TubeCo., this city, characterizes the prob-able developments in radio sets duringthe new year as refinements in exist-ing designs, with the possible excep-tion of the practical application of thepentode.

"Radio reception today," declares Mr.Lewis, "is well-nigh perfect. The fre-quency characteristics of a good radioare practically the same as those ofour better broadcasting transmitters.Listening to a really fine program onone of the high grade sets now avail-able at reasonable prices, one wondersjust what can be done to make thingsbetter. However, guided by past ex-perience, we appreciate that perfectionis never actually attained, and thatprogress must continually be made. In1930, such advances will probably bein the matter of mechanical and elec-trical refinements --slight variations instandard designs that will mean dol-lars in the pockets of the consumerthrough a reduction in service calls.

"In our own branch of the industry,we are endeavoring to make tubes justa little bit better than our past prod-uct-through structural improvementsand greater facilities for quick andaccurate testing. Our research depart-ment and laboratories are working

night and day in exhaustive develop -nu nt work.

"The only possible radical develop-ment anticipated by engineers lies inthe design of circuits employing thepentode and the improvement of thistube itself. Should any set manufac-turer find this tube of economic value,Arcturus is ready to make it for him.

"Remote control devices, making itpossible for the operator to adjust hisset from a distant point of comfort,will undoubtedly be developed to thepoint where they can be incorporatedeffectively in medium priced sets.".

"The fiery ordeal through which theradio industry is now passing maycause temporary discouragement, butwe feel that it is a purifying processand out of it will come a cleaner andbetter radio business; at least, forthose companies who will profit by theexperience of the past three monthsand set their policies accordingly."

MERCHANTS PLEASED

With the end of the year close athand, the radio trade of San Franciscohave reason to congratulate themselves.While some sacrifice instruments havebeen thrown on the market, there hasyet been such volume that all haveclone some business, and some haveclone considerable business at a good

fair profit. The dumpage sales havebeen the typical department store bar-gains.

Just after the stock crash and whilethe long drought was still getting dry-er, there were two or three ratherdiscouraging weeks. Then came a mag-nificent drive of cooperative effort onthe part of the business men headed bythe Down -town Club, of which Mat-thew Hale is president. And theystarted right. Make it a joyous andoptimistic Christmas. Make all Decem-ber a grand holiday celebration. Com-mittees on finance, on decoration, onprogram, on poor relief, all got into awhirlwind of action. The electricalcompanies donated electricity, wiringcompanies donated services, the hookand ladder companies helped decoratemiles of out -door trees in the publicparks, beautiful giants of the forest,wonderfully emblazoned in rainbows ofcolor rose in strategic positions-greatfestoons swung up from the four cor-ners of street crossings with huge bellsin the center green by day and lightedby night, miles of street were heavilyfestooned with greens and coloredlights. Everybody caught the festivespirit; and soon wonderful decorationsglorified the fronts of such buildings asthe Examiner, the Emporium buildingand the Plaza Hotel. bodies joined to make the programs andthe parades all more than ordinary.This was the kind of cooperation to putpeople into the right spending mood,and it worked.

Ben R. Scott, manager of the radiodepartment of Lachman's, the greathome -furnishing emporium of the Mis-sion District, reports that Decembertrade has been stepping away ahead ofthat of last year, and that November,in spite of all discouragements did notlag far behind. He has been putting ona great Sparton campaign. He is ven-turing about as daring a test as darebe made. At the great El Capitan thea-tre, nearby every evening some record-ing artist appears on the stage immedi-ately following a reproduction of one ofher selections as recorded on a phono-graph and produced through the radio.It has really caught the popular fancyand every day they have callers broughtin by no other agency than this tonetest. Scott is pleased that this yearcompetition has been very keen. Bythat he says he does not include thespecial sale stuff of the downtown de-partments, where volume is demandedat any cost. People of discriminationhave -learned to shun such sales. But theLachman establishment never forgetsthat their best and cheapest ad is thedisplay window; so these are alwaysgreat. The Sparton window on the oneside is rich with drapes and holidayfestoons, and the other window simplytries to beat it, with draperies and allthat radiates a rainbow effect.

There's a reason why C. L. Mc-Whorter, the Pacific Coast manager forPhilco, is claiming next year as thegreatest in their history. There isnothing like "telling your business thatyou may do business." And here werun right into a six -page Philco sec-tion in a local Sunday paper, all devot-ed to telling the public what Philco hasdone, is doing, and better yet what itproposes to do. The first page startswith the wonderful story of Chevalierand the Philco. This announced thatthe following day at the St. Francistheatre every woman attending thematinee where his talking -picture "TheLove Parade" was to presented bycourtesy of the Philco an autographedphoto of the famous artist. In addition,there was presented a special filmthrough courtesy of the Philco com-pany showing the many intricate pro-cesses in the production of the modernradio set, including the marvelous test-ing apparatus necessary for the produc-tion of a precisely balanced -unit radio.Tieing in on this ad were a host ofPhilco dealers not only from the centralbusiness districts but from the impor-tant outlying districts like Filmorestreet, Clement street and the MissionDistrict. Oakland also elbowed in quitea space for themselves and even Vallejograbbed a corner. The Peerless Stores,a chain of tire stores took a whole pageto tell about the Philco at all their SanFrancisco and Oakland branches.

No audition has aroused greaterpublic interest in the West than thelast national Atwater Kent event. Evenour foreign colony, Philippino, Mexican,Italian, all who can understand theEnglish language, warmed up to theinterest of the occassion. Perhaps thefact that a blind student from Cali-fornia was one of the contestants,rather intensified the interest in thisstate. There was more than the usualsympathetic desire that he might suc-ceed, owing to the natural good -willfelt for one who struggles bravely for-ward under unusual handicaps. Butpreparatory to the great interest andleading up to it, has been the evergrowing appreciation of the splendidclassical broadcasts with which A. At -

water Kent has favored his thousandsof friends for so long a time. They areso highly appreciated by all real musiclovers; and California becomes moremusic -minded with every passing year.So the fact that our two representa-tives from Los Angeles swung in forsecond place is highly appreciated, andleads to constant expressions of com-mendation at the generosity of thePatron Atwater Kent in giving thisequal opportunity to even the poorestwho may have talent to develop.

Gray & Danielson, manufacturers ofthe Remler radio receiving sets, arejust moving into a new building atNineteenth and Bryant streets, wherethey will have three large floors, withgood trackage facilities. For severalweeks they have been occupying tem-porary quarters at 518 Folsom, fromwhich they have been crowding forwardtheir business in some other lines inwhich they are interested. They weredriven into these quarters unceremoni-ously by a fire which very thoroughlycleaned out their former quarters onFirst street, though not completely de-stroying everything. The unfortunatepart for them was chiefly that they hadon hand quite a quantity of receivingsets all ready to go out the next dayon orders already received. The fortu-nate part for them was that they wereable to salvage the greater part of theirmost important machinery, and this isenabling them rapidly to re -instatetheir factory, so that they expect to bein full operation within the next thirtydays. As this important salvage leavesthe loss sufficient for the insurance tocover; their financial loss is reduced tothat of the stoppage of production fora short season.

Extreme optimism over the oppor-tunities for a greatly increased busi-ness in 1930 was expressed here todayby H. E. Capehart, president and gen-eral manager of the Capehart Corp.,this city, maker of the Orchestrope."My optimism is inspired by actualconditions in our business at the pres-ent time as much as from my analysisof general business conditions and ten-dencies," Mr. Capehart declared.

"If I were to judge general businessconditions solely by the experience ofthe Capehart Corp.," Mr. Capehartadded, "I would say that business con-ditions have never been better. Oursales volume has maintained a rapid,steady and substantial increase, andcollections were never better - all ofwhich indicates that Capehart dealersare finding a ready sale for our prod-uct and are making money.

"To a certain extent, this conditioncan be ascribed to the fact that ourproduct is largely a producer of reve-nue rather than a luxury or expense.In these days of keen competition, alertbusiness men are always on the look-out for something to increase their vol-ume of sales and profits. Radio Now a Business,

No Longer a Game, Says

"There is not much originality in theobservation that 1929 has shaken a lotof foolishness out of the radio industry-foolishness that was put there by thephenomenal demands of 1928. The Ohio Radio Trade Associationwill be host to the convention of theNational Federation of Radio Associa-tions to be held here February 10 and11. Howard Shartle, local Victor dis-tributor, president of the Ohio asso-ciation, is chairman of the finance com-mittee for the convention, and is beingassisted by Ralph Meyers, Majesticjobber, and Roy Bechtol, Atwater Kentwholesaler.

The entertainment committee is un-der the chairmanship of H. W. Roberts,Kolster-Brandes distributor.

Convention headquarters will be inthe Hotel Statler, and special trans-portation rates have been arranged forwith railroads.

Brunswick Branch Reports NiceIncrease in Radio Business -See Good Year for RecordsWith Increased Interest BeingShown in Combinations.

Both distributors and retailers arebeginning to look toward 1930 and allare optimistic. It looks like anotheryear for radio in general. Records areexpected to pick up with the develop-ment of less expensive combinations.However, it is recognized that radio isno longer the novel product it was twoyears ago or even last year, and that itmust be sold. Moving radio is no long-er merely a matter of taking orders. Itwill have to be sold on its merits andaccomplishments.

The local branch of the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. has made up sev-eral records in the Kansas City Star'sW11AF stndi,.s, employing home talent,according to 'f. H. Condon. Recordingshave been made by Jimmy Joy and hisorchestra, Chic Scoggins and his Pla-Mor orchestra, the Twelve Clouds andGeorge Lee's colored orchestra. Eachorganization has several releases to itscredit and the sale of their records aredoing very nicely.

The radio business for the Brunswickcompany is showing a nice increaseover last year, Mr. Condon reports, withbusiness this month well ahead of last.Records are selling better generally.The model S-14 lowboy, the S-31 combi-nation and the S-21 highboy are leadingin radio models.

Prospects for the coming year aregood for Brunswick in this territory,Mr. Condon says.

"Radio is going to be sold hereafteron its merits and not because it is anovelty," Mr. Condon said. "The prod-uct's name and accomplishments arebeing taken into consideration moreand more by the buying public.

The Western Radio Co., according toMr. Hartman, sales manager, can hard-ly get enough merchandise to supplyits dealers with Atwater Kents. During

the past few weeks dealers have beenclamoring for more merchandise andthe Western Radio Co. has been pass-ing the cry on to the factory. "It re-minds us of the days when radio wasin its heyday," Mr. Hartman said.

The sales volume of this companywill this year exceed quite a little thatof last. One interesting incident wasa four -day delivery on two cars of mer-chandise from Philadelphia, from thetime the merchandise was turned overto the railroad there to the time it wasspotted at the Western's dock here.Such service is extraordinary at thistime of the year.

As near as the company can checkwith its dealers, there is no stock onthe retailers' floors at this time. So faras Kansas City buying conditions areconcerned, the company finds them thebest they have been this year. KansasCity, Kansas, merchants, up to Octo-ber, did twenty-five to fifty per cent.more business than last year; since thattime they have only done about halfwhat they did in 1928. This is prob-ably due to the fact that at this seasonpeople buy from advertisements, making up buying lists from daily news-paper ads, and Kansas City, Kansas,merchants as a whole do little advertis-ing.

The Davidson Furniture Co.'s radiodepartment has experienced a very niceDecember business with Majestic, At-water Kent and Victor leading.

The Wurlitzer Music Co. has openedtwo new departments, a special sectionfor (rand and orchestra instruments andone for old and new violins. II. VirgilMoore, former orchestra leader for thePublix theares, is in charge of the handand orchestra department and HermanEssak, formerly violin collector for theChicago Wurlitzer stores, is in chargeof the violin section.

Mrs. Charles Wheatley, who, withher husband, conducts a radio businessat Thirtieth street and McGeen traffic -

way, has the distinction of having soldand delivered more Philco radios thanany other woman in the state of Mis-souri, according to L. M. Kelly, of thePhilco factory branch.

The Arles Radio Co. has opened anew radio store at 1102 Armour boule-vard. E. D. Eugster, manager, is alsomanager of another store, opened ayear ago at 105 West Linwood boule-vard. Leander Biggs has charge of thesales and service at the new store.Sparton, Majestic and Freed and Philcoradios are handled.
