THE EVENT: NEW ZEALANDMODEL SECURITY COUNCIL 2012New Zealand Model Security Council (NZModelSC) is UN Youth’s premier event for University students. This year’s theme is ‘Domains of Warfare’, dealing with the wide range of technologies used in conflict in the present day. During this unique conference, delegates will address a wide range of issues around modern technology- its influence, benefits and dangers. As the most powerful organ of the UN, the Security Council is an action-oriented forum with the focus being on finding solutions rather than simply initiating political discussion. NZModelSC 2012 will be a challenging, thought provoking conference to fire up delegates’ imagination, emotions and inspiration.

THEME: DOMAINS OF WARFARE“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” ALBERT EINSTEIN

Modern warfare is a constantly changing, multi-faceted challenge for both countries in conflict and countries at peace. New technology has created new domains of conflict which international bodies such as the United Nations must now respond to. Acts of cyber-terrorism, biological arms and extensive theft of intelligence information have made what constitutes an act of war difficult to define. For humanity new technologies not only alter the way we communicate, develop and live but also the way we die.

Then it is not difficult to imagine a technological security crisis arising from non-conventional weaponry and global internet dependency or the use of outer space. Proper management of our technological resources is essential to prevent a crisis in the long run.

Technological literacy is becoming essential for survival in our rapidly-changing global environment. This conference will encourage an appreciation of the influence technological development has over our society. We live on a planet where the flick of a switch can change the world and where wars can be fought, not in years, but minutes.

PROGRAMMEDuring the first two days delegates will be split among five Security Council committees and will represent their country individually. Committees will debate solutions to particular security issues and write a resolution detailing their proposed actions.

The third day consists of a plenary session, with the students representing their member state together as a delegation. The plenary offers delegates the opportunity to work in teams and experience diplomatic problem solving on a wider level.

Guest speakers are an integral part of this conference. They will inform debate as well as inspiring and challenging delegates.

During the conference delegates will also have the opportunity to attend social events each evening and build relationships with their peers whilst enjoying all Auckland has to offer. These include an opening dinner before the commencement of formal debate, committee dinners and a formal dinner.
